Singapore Fans break record: Queuing 7 days in advance for SMTown

K-pop fans are already queuing up at Marina Bay on Nov 17, 2012 for the SMTown concert due to be held on the floating platform on Nov 23, 2012.

SMTown Live World Tour III will be a four-hour long mega concert featuring S.M.Entertainment artistes Super Junior, Girls' Generation, BoA, f(x), EXO, Kangta, SHINee and TVXQ.

It is common for fans to queue overnight to get a good spot in the mosh pits, this was the case when K-pop group Big Bang were in town for their Alive Galaxy Tour earlier this year in September. Queuing seven days in advance however, has to be a new record.

"Overnight queuing not allowed"

RITS' "Guide To SM Town Live Tour III" has two terms and conditions which clearly state that fans who queue overnight may be required by security to leave the concert premises.

Official opening times for the concert's Mosh Pit are 9 am on Friday, and staff will start distributing wrist tags at 11 am.

"We are not sure if we will wait until Friday, see how I guess," said a 15-year-old male fan who was there with two other friends.

"If they ask us to leave, it's like queuing for nothing, it's not fair," said the fan, who is a student currently having his holidays.

He and his two other friends are keeping a spot for their group of 11 Girls' Generation fans, and they will take turns to keep "queue duty" until Friday.

Then, they will fight for a chance to be a few of the first in the mosh pit and closest to their female K-pop idols on stage.

"Queue-ers for Hire"

In the meantime, other enterprising young Singaporeans are looking to make some extra pocket money from queuing - on behalf of die hard fans who can't do it themselves.

Advertisements on online classifieds like Gumtree have appeared, offering queuing services at an average rate of between $4.50 and $5 an hour.

Y! Singapore spoke to one of the queue-ers for hire, 16-year-old student Dawn Ong.

"I will start queuing on Wednesday night - I've been paid $4.50 an hour to queue from 12 midnight on Wednesday to Friday morning, 9 am when the official opening starts," said Ong.

That works out to $148.50 for about thirty three hours of "work" for Ong, who will be spending her time reading or watching dramas on her laptop. She will be splitting the money in half with her best friend, who will relieve her of her duty occasionally so she can use the toilet or get a meal.

"It's easy money," said the Secondary Four student, who was "hired" by a group of 10 female fans in their early twenties who are working in the Central Business District nearby.

"They said they will come and check in on me to make sure I'm queuing," said Ong with a laugh.

This year's hotly anticipated SM Town Live Tour III concert has been about queues, queues, and more queues.

Well, pictures 2 and 3 were taken personally by my friend, he claimed the people camping there were crazy. If there is ever a "Craziest fan award", these Kpop fans will definitely clinch it.

asnindie 19th-Nov-2012 03:38 pm (UTC)
What about personal hygiene?

To be fair people que for crap like Star Wars and IPad etc and this makes more sense. But they're gonna get thrown off premises for loitering and it'll all be pointless.
uledy 19th-Nov-2012 03:46 pm (UTC)
don't these people have jobs or school or...lives?
in_noctem 19th-Nov-2012 03:53 pm (UTC)
Most of them seem to be <16 and it's the school holidays here. What I'm curious to know is don't their parents wonder where they've gone off to?
steelsigns 19th-Nov-2012 03:48 pm (UTC)
Not sure how to react to this tbh, all I can think about is how I only have a week left to cram for exams and people are spending an entire week like this? Don't know if I think they're plain foolish or if I'm envious lol.

That said, is it acceptable for 1 person to queue for A WHOLE ENTIRE GROUP OF >1? I'd be so pissed off if a person in front of me in the line were to be replaced by a group of 10+ people.
exo_cath 19th-Nov-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
'I'd be so pissed off if a person in front of me in the line were to be replaced by a group of 10+ people.'

I was thinking the same thing

dbskthskjyj 19th-Nov-2012 04:52 pm (UTC)
It'd drive me insane not having a proper shower for a week... and I've been a Scout lol I suppose you can always carry wet towels with you and some soap and take turns to go into a shop's toilet and clean yourself, but damn...
fallingstarryuu 19th-Nov-2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
they're gonna die at the 4 hour long concert like man you r just gonna collapse.
_union180 19th-Nov-2012 05:08 pm (UTC)

sandra_hall 20th-Nov-2012 07:33 pm (UTC)

hitsujiga 19th-Nov-2012 06:48 pm (UTC)
lol u r not the 1st ones to do that shit xDDD oh the heydays of jrock, lmfao.
camping to get a good seat and then complaining if someone enters the line before you, when you JUST went to the toilet. LMFAO yeah it sounds familiar ngl.

never dit that shit tho, bc it's stupid and i hope they kick them out, so they don't be 1st row. excluding them from the concert is a bit much imo, but well maybe they learn? XD

queue-ers for hire tho? W-T-F!!! xD i mean it's smart but srsly..how much money do they spend on this one concert alone? will never understand~
sandra_hall 20th-Nov-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
to fair, I think if they want it that bad, they should be allowed to be in the first row.
muhnaplusmuhna 19th-Nov-2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
I shouldn't laugh but it's impossible not to
demonology81 19th-Nov-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
it's embarassing and stupid.

glad i got seat tickets so i don't have to deal with the queue.
allthe_love 19th-Nov-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
Hi 5!

heehyukhaeteuk 19th-Nov-2012 08:22 pm (UTC)

kokkikokki 19th-Nov-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
wow. talk about dedication.
good luck to these people. i don't think i have someone i idolise so much that i would willingly queue for a whole week just to see them up-close.
