Questions of fairness raised for ‘Netizen Popularity Award’ at ’2012 Melon Music Awards’

Questions of fairness have been raised for the ‘2012 Melon Music Awards‘.

The award that raised the biggest question was the ‘Netizen Popularity Award‘. According to netizen votes, JYJ‘s Junsu ranked #1 with 185,519 votes for his ‘Nice Guy‘ OST, ”Love Is Like Snow“. However, the award went instead to B2ST with “Midnight“, who only received 147,310 votes.

Unlike the other awards in which netizen votes only count for 30% of the final result with 70% coming from music charts, netizen votes count double (60%) for the ‘Netizen Popularity Award’, so many fans are questioning the outcome. An industry representative who requested anonymity said, “It looks like it’s a similar situation to how Junsu’s group JYJ used to receive limitations by his previous label“.

The question has gotten even worse because the hosts of the awards had said, “The core of this award is fairness, popularity, and professionalism. It will be a fair award because it will be decided by the music chart rank and netizen votes.

:/ hnngh, I think all of us are used to it by now including JYJ, but I hate how it's made us become so bitter and realistic about everything.
lilmissniza THIS IS BRAND NEW INFORMATION!19th-Dec-2012 03:21 am (UTC)

Well, most Korean Music Awards haven't been exactly fair in a while so... whatever.
asnindie 19th-Dec-2012 03:34 am (UTC)
Since when was it ever fair? Honestly the awards are all bogus so who cares, seriously.
liarose 19th-Dec-2012 03:51 am (UTC)
honestly, Beast wins in any categories should be questioned....
aleexnews 19th-Dec-2012 03:52 am (UTC)
whenever b2st wins i would question fairness too, like that daesang they got lol what a joke. then again from 2009 on MAMA has always been a joke when it comes to awards idk why netizens are still surprised

Expected this to happen actually =.=

Though the lawsuit might be legally over, from the way KBS. MBC and SBS answered, it's obvious JYJ are still being blocked. =.=

b1gay4 19th-Dec-2012 07:08 am (UTC)
it's okay he always has his favorite "non-racial" activity to cheer him up
joongielover 19th-Dec-2012 05:22 am (UTC)
wondering is beast was also confused. there was a post about their speech mentioning junsu. i was like, wait...junsu lost? this is now irrelevant.
yingmoon26 19th-Dec-2012 06:01 am (UTC)
lol what is even the point of these awards? just watch for the performances, if they're any good.
it's similar to the awards in HK...we have an expression for it, "分豬肉" (literally, divide the pork, aka giving out awards to whoever came regardless of whether they actually deserve it or not. everyone gets a piece of the pie)
that was basically the MAMAs in a nutshell.
cagallisakura 19th-Dec-2012 07:25 am (UTC)
omg are you talking about the tvb awards? xD like how Yeung Yi won best actress for On Call while Linda Chung only got favourite character for her role in Witness Insecurity? basically whoever wins the big awards is who tvb was pushing to be most popular of the year.
yingmoon26 19th-Dec-2012 09:25 am (UTC)
this year it's supposed to be voted by people so i don't know. but who knows, they could've tampered with the results. i'm just glad raymond lam did not win actor of the year because he is just not a good actor; he is basically the same in every single show he acts in and he is extremely overrated.

but in general it's not even just the tvb annual tv show awards. all the music awards too. tvb has been like that for so many years now anyway. no progress at all from this channel. well, they don't really need to, i guess, since they're basically a monopoly.
b1gay4 19th-Dec-2012 07:07 am (UTC)
truism much???

I'm not even surprised.

So how well Junsus's OST did on music charts compared to Beast's Midnight as 40% is still coming from chart placements?
supplanter 19th-Dec-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
That's what I want to know. And even then I'm pretty sure you'd still need to know the vote share and sales for everyone else in the category to calculate it for sure.
fantaesticbaby 19th-Dec-2012 11:54 am (UTC)
both are basic, neither deserve the award imo
mjspice 19th-Dec-2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
No show is legit nowadays tbh. It's always about who is the most favored by the judges or who pays more.
0nlymemories 19th-Dec-2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
It's too bad that Junsu is tied to JYJ/C-Jes, because his career is going to suffer for it. He's incredibly talented, but C-Jes is way, way too in love with litigation and Jaejoong isn't exactly a hot commodity in Korea, let alone with any netizens with a shred of human decency.

tbh I'm probably going to be boycotting all of his activities when I'm living in Korea, unless there's proof somewhere that the profits aren't split between his band members. And that makes me sad, because he's really, really good at what he does. :/
xoshio 19th-Dec-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
Song Ji Hyo is also in C-Jes but can appear on TV shows without any trouble.
So I don't think it has anything to do with C-Jes but more because of what happened between JYJ and SM - And it's not like the other big agencies wants Junsu (again, because of sm)
0nlymemories 19th-Dec-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
SM wouldn't have been so difficult about it if JYJ hadn't tried to sue them for damages, though. Which is what I was talking about with C-Jes having a problem with litigation. The pretty clear story between the lines of the ongoing SM-JYJ legal battle is that JYJ was trying to claim damages that they had no right to, because they were breaking their contracts.

It drug on for years and years and years, C-Jes's lawyer finally gave up on getting money out of SM, SM cheerfully settled.

tbh I think that SM is way less interested in screwing over JYJ and way more interested in making sure that it's understood that when you sign a contract with them, it's going to be honored.
baboboy 19th-Dec-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
you're going to boycott junsu?
0nlymemories 19th-Dec-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
I'm boycotting Jaejoong, therefor I have to not buy anything that would make him money- Which, unless JYJ is very different from every other band I've heard of, means not buying anything that Junsu or Yoochun are involved in, because all of their money gets pooled together.

Which sucks, because I love Junsu as an artist, and I think Yoochun is a really good actor. But then, I also didn't pay to see X-Men: First Class because Fassy is a girlfriend beating asshole, and I don't eat Chik-fil-a, despite its advanced deliciousness, because their politics are awful.
baboboy 19th-Dec-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
I don't think they do that, next year when they release an album as jyj they will but not with their individual activities.
0nlymemories 19th-Dec-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
I will definitely have to double check, because that would make me really happy. I know that in Miss A and SNSD all of the members' solo stuff (acting/modeling/variety) gets divided among the entire band, so I was erring on the side of caution.

But it would make me super happy to be able to go to musicals/solo shows/buy SungKyunKwan Scandal on DVD with a clear conscience.
supplanter 19th-Dec-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
Oh, it's 70% sales, and 30% votes? That clarifies it for me... I was trying to calculate this for the rookies (in an estimated way, since my sales numbers were based on cumulative 4-wk sales of all charting songs on Gaon, not MelOn, and it's USD, while the exchange rate may not have been constant throughout the year). If I took the total sales for all artists in the category it's USD2,355k. So taking the individual act's sales, divide by 2355k, multiply by 70 to come up with the sales portion, then taking the (known) vote percentage, multiplying by 30, to come up with the online voting portion, and then adding those together gets:

Ailee $710k (21.1) 28% (8.4) = 29.5
Ulala Session $700k (20.8) 6% (1.8) = 22.6
Lee Hi $450k (13.4) 4.2% (4.2) = 17.6
b.a.p $420k (12.8) 47% (14.1) = 26.9
Juniel $75k (2.2) 5% (1.5) = 3.7

So if they were hellbent on giving out two rookie awards while not considering BuskerBusker for the category, b.a.p's win looks pretty legit, even if it obviously hinged on the online voting. Annnnd... their sales aren't that far behind Lee Hi's, in this scheme, even if it's 7 songs to 1. >.>;;; And I think MelOn might have felt they had to acknowledge an act that got nearly 50% of the vote somehow. Juniel was seriously overmatched for this category, though. I wonder why Spica wasn't in here? They had respectable sales for like 3 songs (not even including Lonely), so it would've been a little less embarrassing. ^^;;

(When it was 80:20 ulala session was a little more than b.a.p, so a legit win could still have been possible, it just would have been a squeaker....)
xalter_egox 21st-Dec-2012 12:42 pm (UTC)
I wonder, if it was any other group besides B2ST, would people be complaining? So much hate going on toward them recently, I don't understand why :( Then again, if it was anyone against Junsu, pretty sure the netizens would complain. It's Junsu after all.

Oh Korean music awards, you're always so confusing -___-
