Fuse's 44 Most Anticipated Albums of 2013 ft. SNSD and Psy

Who: The nine-member (yes, NINE) K-pop girl group Girls' Generation who became fast friends with Kelly Ripa when they performed their first international single "The Boys" (released in Korean and English)

What: An American version of their I Got A Boy Korean album (released New Years Day)
When: 2013
What We Know: The group is in talks with Interscope Records to release an American version of their latest Korean album though a date, title, and track details are undecided. If a nine-member Korean group making it in the U.S. sounds like a stretch remember two members are from America! Yet we think most will react like David Letterman -- with nine women writhing in front of them, he looked like he could barely control himself!

Who: The artist with the most-viewed video ever on YouTubePsy (which means a new Psy music video AND a new dance, how could we NOT be excited?!)
What: Psy's new international album, still untitled, that will feature both Korean and English tracks with possible production by Diplo and guest appearance by 2 Chainz
When: February or March
What We Know: He has global appeal now, but Psy has expressed he wants to release his new single in Korean with an accompanying dance featuring "some sports move". The K-pop veteran has said he wants a solo comeback single to prove he can have similar success as "Gangnam Style" without the help of another big name. Can he deliver a song that crosses language barriers...AGAIN?!

So SNSD's just gonna re-release the I Got a Boys album in English? Don't know how to feel about that.

My dream album would have English versions of RDR, Genie (sadly impossible due to copyright issues I think), and then ANY of their songs from Japanese albums.
eburnine 16th-Jan-2013 02:42 pm (UTC)
Could you elaborate on the Genie/copyright issues thing? I would love an english-version Genie as well and don't really understand those types of things.
boba_holic 16th-Jan-2013 09:59 pm (UTC)
Iirc, some other artist also bought the copyrights to Genie except with different lyrics obviously. I think the other artist is only allowed to promote it in Europe/US, while snsd can only promote it in Asia.
stephantasm 16th-Jan-2013 06:22 am (UTC)
that performance was so bad. IDK if I see it for psy again because a huge chunk of that success over here was the dance, the beat, and his hilarious~ looks. People don't even take him seriously.
the_erotomanic 16th-Jan-2013 06:23 am (UTC)
i love that performance and remix so much that i can't even hate on the original version of the boys.
unicornios 16th-Jan-2013 06:31 am (UTC)
really? I thought that the remix was so wrong for their American debut but I do love the original version of The Boys so maybe I just have bad taste lol
the_erotomanic 16th-Jan-2013 06:38 am (UTC)
the original version of the boys is fine. i like it enough. i just think it's the weakest of all their title songs.

i don't really know if the remix worked to their advantage in the u.s., but i love it regardless. i like those dance breaks a lot. i also like the remix of the boys they did for the 2011 mama. i guess i just like the remixes in general. lol!

how much is SM paying people for fake demand? Sooyoung got so much cam time on David Letterman i was like DAMN
djlancerock 16th-Jan-2013 06:42 am (UTC)
I am less concerned about Letterman not controlling himself and more so about Regis

her bangs ruin my life

aeries_amethyst 17th-Jan-2013 02:33 am (UTC)
Her bangs just restrain the gloriousness of her hair T___T

Her hairflips gave me life...Those bangs are my kryptonite OTL
achan123 17th-Jan-2013 05:01 am (UTC)
i dont get it... does she have bangs in this gif? aren't bangs supposed to be on ur forehead? sorry, i dont know hair terminology much :/
aeries_amethyst 17th-Jan-2013 06:49 am (UTC)
She doesn't have bangs in this gif but she does have bangs now. This gif was from The Boys era where she had really flawless hair. Her hair now is kind of tame and her bangs aren't doing her any favours.
chibiyunie 16th-Jan-2013 07:00 am (UTC)
SOOYOUNG!
Ah, forever and always my bias! She looked amazing during The Boys.
Getting more of that? Yes please.

An American version of their I Got A Boy Korean album

no thanks
bflayhd 16th-Jan-2013 08:06 am (UTC)
I honestly think that IGAB is still the best song SNSD to attract new fans in America. Let's just hope they have the "swag" to pull it off here.
xalexandriam 16th-Jan-2013 04:01 pm (UTC)
As long as they give IGAB English lyrics that actually fit the concept, then ok.

I can't see Psy being popular outside of Gangnam Style tbh.
luvey 16th-Jan-2013 04:42 pm (UTC)
i agree about Psy, sadly Gangnam Style became popular for the wrong reasons, not the music itself. even in the blurb about Psy, they allude to wanting another "funny little dance" from him.
luvey 16th-Jan-2013 04:40 pm (UTC)
the changes in SNSD's music game with IGAB, screamed "western" release to me from the start. i really hoped they worked on their english if they plan to hit the talk show circuit, if they want to gain more interest beyond the fandom.

i wish the album released wouldn't be a full english one with only english songs. nor do i want to see an album with only english songs and then separate korean songs.a mix of english and korean languages within the songs could work for them. similar to what many latin artists did to gain mainstream radio play when many moved from spanish only radio.
achan123 17th-Jan-2013 05:04 am (UTC)
this.

i really wish they have songs with varying proportions of english and korean in them. that would probably be the best way to break in US i think.
luvey 17th-Jan-2013 04:11 pm (UTC)
considering that Psy's break through wasn't because it was a really amazing song.

i was watching a commercial on E last night about a british girl group the Saturdays and their reality show in trying to make it here in the states. and seeing how SNSD is pushing their brand over here as well....it makes me wonder if the girl group trend will be coming back. if the Saturday's do well, if Spice Girls do have a reunion...this could make it ripe for SNSD (if SMe builds up their fanbase here instead of going, "we are here, love us!").

achan123 18th-Jan-2013 01:28 pm (UTC)
true but u are forgetting that SNSD sing in korean. most, and actually most americans don't like listening to music they don't understand. i tried making my friends listen to kpop as well, but they couldn't get over the fact that it wasn't in english. also, the public might not be open to an all asian girl group.
luvey 18th-Jan-2013 06:26 pm (UTC)
nope not forgetting that. in my original comment i mentioned how it may work for them to do a song that does both korean and english. meaning mostly english with a sprinkling of korean. very similar to what the latin groups/singers did to get regular airplay on mainstream radio. straight korean songs won't fly. Psy was a fluke that one would put in the category with the lambada and the macarena.

what will hold them back the most is the girls not speaking english in interviews on the shows and radio. the public will get bored and annoyed at tiffiany and jessica doing it all and question why don't the others speak english. sadly we do love our official language. with girl groups it is more than just the music, it also the personality. and americans will be lazy to not look up subbed shows. we barely watch subbed movies and wait for someone to do the remake.

pretty much the atmosphere has to be right. i'm not even an SNSD fan, but i do want Kpop to succeed here in little bursts (for pure selfish reasons - more concerts).

the public could be open to an all asian group, but i don't think it will be SNSD since their image isn't fully honest. i said a long time ago, Kpop could work, BUT they need a serious regular hook up like with disney. JYP did have the right idea hooking up with Nickelodeon BUT the story of the tv movie was wonky and there was a lot of holes in the follow up. now, there probably won't be.

one thing that could work in the favor is that a group will have to take on the ethics of putting in the work, and not just showing up relaying on them to automatically have fans. alot of american band/solo artists tours endlessly, finds ways to get their music out there in random ways. the WGs had their tour but...again no follow up. everyone says the tour bombed, BUT seriously for a new group that the majority of mainstream people never heard of, it did well.

lastly, the US has to want girl groups. no matter how amazing they are, it has to be the right moment...even if they sing fully in english.
xx_pinkstar 16th-Jan-2013 05:05 pm (UTC)
everyone should stop hating, we all know that Soo's hair is going to single-handedly break them into the market

(naa but realistically, I know they're going to flop but I would actually love them to succeed)
aeries_amethyst 17th-Jan-2013 02:43 am (UTC)
BLESS YOU FOR THIS GLORIOUS GODDESS SOOYOUNG GIF!!! XD

eishastan 17th-Jan-2013 05:12 am (UTC)
If an english SNSD album means original material i'm up for it, if not i would prefer if they skip the venture.
mjspice 17th-Jan-2013 05:56 am (UTC)
Only here for PSY.
brackdiamon 17th-Jan-2013 12:33 pm (UTC)
with nine women writhing in front of them, he looked like he could barely control himself!

They weren't really.. writhing tho..? This is the shit I don't like and don't look forward to seeing when SNSD tries (AGAIN) for fame in the U.S.
