Hong Seok Cheon to Tell All on ‘Healing Camp’

Hong Seok Cheon is coming to SBS’ Healing Camp.

SBS confirmed reports on January 17 that the entertainer had agreed to sit down and be interviewed on Healing Camp.

It will mark Hong Seok Cheon’s first appearance in an exclusive talk show program on a major broadcasting station and the celebrity will frankly discuss his life, how he came to publicly declare his sexual orientation and the response from the public since then.

Hong Seok Cheon is a model, actor and entrepreneur who made ripples in the Korean entertainment industry in 2000 after becoming one of the first Korean stars to publicly come out as being gay.

His recording for Healing Camp will take place on January 23.

FLAWLESS MAN. I hope the majority of the public takes this seriously and doesn't bash him (since I know that's going to happen, sadly)

I'm looking forward to this. I hope someone subs this. I love when he appears on shows.

He's fantastic!
I don't know if the fact that he's been invited to shows lately means that the public is becoming more understanding but I'm looking forward to this.

I don't get why omona kisses this guy's ass so much when he's participated in shitty stuff that other celebs would never get away with...
the_erotomanic 18th-Jan-2013 05:33 am (UTC)
what did he do?
muzegrey 18th-Jan-2013 05:37 am (UTC)
I guess courage accounts for nothing.

What exactly are you calling shitty though?

No, bun, there was an entire post about it. Try again.
uledy 18th-Jan-2013 05:40 pm (UTC)
But here's the thing, very few people have acknowledged his problematic actions. Of all the comments responding to my original post, only one person knew what I was referring to. How is that kissing ass while acknowledging something is problematic...?

And, well, none of these Korean stars have had repercussions for their cultural insensitivities and racism so I don't quite understand your point...
uledy 18th-Jan-2013 06:16 pm (UTC)
I was never saying that you can’t be a fan of problematic things. I was just making the point that people are constantly singing his praises without acknowledging the fucked up things he’s done, but the reasons for that could be any of those which you’ve just pointed out. Who knows.

And as a huge BB fan, I totally understand what you mean. Specifically as a Black BB fan, I reallllllly get what you mean.

But it seems perfectly fine for k-pop idols to be huge racists or sexists or homophobes without anything really happening.

Totally. I mean, look at the people who are being harmed by these racist and homophobic acts. They’re already extremely marginalized groups that many members here and in other parts of the internet don’t identify as. Why should people care if it doesn’t directly effect them? It’s difficult and exhausting to talk about this shit and people are so damn lazy.

okay, I think I'm the only dumb one here for not understanding this at all... err... why is this called racist? Is wearing other nation's costume means insulting? I'm sorry I just don't get it. I myself would actually like to try parading around with diffenrent nation's costumes.
dellusions 19th-Jan-2013 12:54 pm (UTC)

i've been trying to figure out what makes this racist for the last couple of days

im guessing its some american historical reference thing (sorry if you are american) that other countries wouldnt generally catch

personally i dont think there is anything wrong with that costume
uledy 19th-Jan-2013 04:37 pm (UTC)
Just google "native american cultural appropriation", I'm sure you'll find something enlightening. Listen to the voices of First Nation people, maybe it'll put things in perspective and show how offensive native costumes truly are.

Is this about his NA halloween costume?
uledy 18th-Jan-2013 02:30 pm (UTC)
Yup. So disappointed and so surprised there wasn't even a post about it.
swhyeon1991 18th-Jan-2013 02:49 pm (UTC)
Oh! Actually it was posted here! I mean at least the photo. But the article didn't really talked about the cultural appropriation he did there and only a handful comments pointed it out. Welp.

Ah, here http://omonatheydidnt.livejournal.com/10181007.html
uledy 18th-Jan-2013 02:58 pm (UTC)
Well...dag. That's disappointing, but not surprising. It's bizarre how people feel like being part of one marginalized group cancels out any other privileges, prejudices, or ignorance one may have about another group. As if you can't do shitty things to oppress others...At least a few people in that post recognized that...
22by7 18th-Jan-2013 05:30 pm (UTC)
lmao what i hadn't even seen that post before, i bet lots of people hadn't too, i do like godofvanity's comment up there "I'm guessing people kiss his ass for the same reason you (or I) like SHINee: they like him while acknowledging he's problematic." except that seok cheon's particular narrative of persecution and what, despite that or because of that, he's tried to do for his community in his country, can't really be easily compared to, um, shinee's existence... but yes, this is definitely fucked up of him and he doesn't deserve to be 'let off' just because he not white/not straight/etc.
22by7 18th-Jan-2013 05:47 pm (UTC)
yeah, this. also speaking just for myself, i haven't read this comm in AGES, just dropped back in this week.

i am curious too. and i don't want to 'academise' this but it's weird that in both this and blackface in korean media it's almost like there's this... uncritical adoption of white american media tropes, is this an actual thing in korean media/culture and could neo-imperialism be partly responsible...
muzegrey 18th-Jan-2013 08:30 pm (UTC)
This. So much. In this case I feel like they are adopting what they think is simply a fashion statement that has been popularized. Doesn't mean it's okay, but this feels like ignorance more than racism like black face.
palebluedot09 18th-Jan-2013 06:29 pm (UTC)
well i didn't go in to that post so i didn't know. thank you for pointing it out. he was wrong to do that.
uledy 18th-Jan-2013 06:36 pm (UTC)
np, I didn't even know about that either post until swhyeon1991 just linked it.
muzegrey 18th-Jan-2013 08:29 pm (UTC)
Um...... he is wearing freaking sailor costume. Seems more like the guy next to him who actually did what you are talking about is the one you should be hating on.

Someone just put paint on him.
uledy 18th-Jan-2013 08:35 pm (UTC)
I'm not even going to bother with your racist ass.
muzegrey 18th-Jan-2013 08:48 pm (UTC)
Really? I must be racist against myself then! ha! ha!

All I'm saying is that you should look closely before you say he's dressed in a NA costume. When he's not.

jasmineakaiumi 18th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
ia, the other guy is the problem. HSC is clearly wearing sailor themed underwear and a matching neck bandana thing.
muzegrey 18th-Jan-2013 05:42 am (UTC)
I want someone to upload this and Lee Jun Ki please. D: Healing Camp is such a great show!
