MBC caught banning Idols who didn't attend the Athletic Championships

Article that talks about how although the 'IAC' is a great opportunity for rookie idols to try to do their best or excel in a certain field to get their names in the headlines, it's becoming a crutch for busier idols who don't have the time to spend nearly two days recording for it.

One idol group said they couldn't attend but MBC was adamant that they come no matter what so the idol group's company lied and said they had another schedule to attend to. MBC eventually found out that there was no "other schedule" and placed them under a ban from their shows as punishment.

This basically scared the other idol groups into being forced to attend, and it's become controversial because idols are already expected to be talented in singing, dancing, acting, variety, and now on top of all of that, sports. Not everyone is obviously going to enjoy or even excel at sports so broadcast companies are being called out on their use of force/power over these idols to get their way.

1. [+349, -8] Taking the show off air is the only solution

2. [+317, -11] They're not doing the singing they were hired to do. Instead they're on variety shows, acting, and sprinting.

3. [+280, -9] Stop milking this program already. No one cares anymore.

4. [+33, -1] It's not fun anymore

5. [+32, -0] Such a trashy program

--

1. [+31, -1] Aside from SM and YG, idol agencies are completely at the mercy of these broadcast channels... Complete mercy. I think MBC is the absolute worst when it comes to abusing this power. They play everything up as a Hallyu concert when they're basically running these idols overseas for free while taking all of the profits for themselves. Then they play this crap up as some athletics competition and end up injuring the kids... Aside from 'Radio Star' and 'Infinity Challenge', MBC is completely ruined... They're using their power to work these idol kids like their slaves..

2. [+30, -0] The show stopped being fun when idols kept coming out of it hurt. Has there ever been an episode where not one idol was injured? There's always one or two that come away with injuries... Let the idols rest over the holiday breaks. They don't have a chance to spend time with their parents as it is.

3. [+28, -0] The first two times was fun but now it's boring because it's all the same stuff.

4. [+27, -0] Who watches the whole thing anymore? People just watch edited clips of their favorite idols or watch other channels until it's time for their idol to come out. Nobody is going to sit there watching the entire thing.

5. [+27, -0] The most recent 'IAC' started recording at 8 a.m. and finished the next day at 5 a.m.... And three came out injured.

Oh My News via Nate + Netizenbuzz

SMFH at MBC. These specials get more and more boring every year tbh. And they apparently take longer and longer to film, which makes no sense to me.

"i've never cared for this since snsd don't go on"

This!
anonymous_loljk 31st-Jan-2013 05:25 am (UTC)
INSTANT RAGE
i've never watched the whole thing anyway. though the offscreen idol interactions are pretty cute... but it's a waste of time & effort..
missnothings 31st-Jan-2013 05:27 am (UTC)
I think most people just care about the fancams that come out of it. Lmao. I usually only watch the cuts of my faves. I skip the rest.
dippz 31st-Jan-2013 05:27 am (UTC)
Who watches the actual show
Its boring as fuck

Why is it still on?

I think the first special they did got really good ratings, so now they don't want to give it up.
stutterflies 31st-Jan-2013 05:29 am (UTC)
MBC should go back to having those star dance battles. I'd rather watch all those mediocre dance routines than the entirety of the athletics special.
At least I'm sure they're more fun for the idols to take part in, after hearing about the 22-hour athletic championships filming.
patentpending 31st-Jan-2013 06:48 am (UTC)
I was just wondering what happened to star dance battle. That was actually entertaining and the idols looked like they had fun watching what everyone else had come up with.
anconeous 31st-Jan-2013 05:35 am (UTC)
Fucking ridiculous.

This show is so unnecessary. Total overkill. The first 2 times they did was fine, but good Lord there is no need for one every single Lunar New Year and summer.
scubajr 31st-Jan-2013 03:37 pm (UTC)
Mte. That fact that they do it twice is even more ridiculous.
pumpkinskin 31st-Jan-2013 05:45 am (UTC)
Why can't they just make them do silly obstacle courses or something like wipeout
missnothings 31st-Jan-2013 05:46 am (UTC)
Isn't that what Dream Team is around for? At least in the summer, that's when the do the obstacle courses.
flumes 31st-Jan-2013 05:47 am (UTC)
shady
hopeandmemory 31st-Jan-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
i used to like the idol sports special until i found out how awfully mbc treats the idols. 22 hours of filming is inhumane. these kids have enough schedules as it is without being held prisoner in a gym for nearly a full day. :/ mbc can go eat a bag of dicks.
waterpulse 31st-Jan-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
Sooo....which idols were banned?
missnothings 31st-Jan-2013 05:55 am (UTC)
I'm waiting for netizens to deduce that... lol.
jeit91 31st-Jan-2013 06:00 am (UTC)
that is some power O_O
921227 31st-Jan-2013 06:09 am (UTC)
Honestly, it does seem like a serious waste of time for idols to do this. And, really, fans only care about the cute fancams and pictures that come from it. Like, the only time I know it's IAC time again, is because I get idol groups in matching track suits being cute with other idol groups on my dash.
g_odalisque13 31st-Jan-2013 06:37 am (UTC)
basically this
jorge_callas 31st-Jan-2013 06:14 am (UTC)
I knew it! I knew MBC had to be doing something to get idols to turn up, the show is next to worthless as far as exposure goes, way too strenuous/dangerous and a total waste of time.

kazu_kumaguro 31st-Jan-2013 06:18 am (UTC)
I remember first time Infinite got in that show they didn't even care when Sungjong tripped and fall, no mention, no screen time and the total air time they got was less than one minute, SMH.
but yeah, cute photos and fancams.
_ochre 31st-Jan-2013 06:15 am (UTC)
tbh the only great thing that ive gotten out of this idol olympics is the excessively affectionate exo fancams

and not of them playing sports
jorge_callas 31st-Jan-2013 07:06 am (UTC)
oh yeah highlight of the event for me.
gigabytexx 31st-Jan-2013 06:19 am (UTC)
poor Infinite & Yoseob :(
goldynchickie 31st-Jan-2013 06:31 am (UTC)
Apparently, Minho hurt himself at IAC. MBC this better not push back SHINee's comeback.
xblackchristmas 31st-Jan-2013 06:47 am (UTC)
noooooooooo ):
hellodee16 31st-Jan-2013 07:01 am (UTC)
man, I miss k-variety shows like XMan and Love Letter.
they need to bring those back tbh...
21banged 31st-Jan-2013 07:26 am (UTC)
OMG I REMEMBER I USED TO WATCH LOVE LETTER ALL THE DAMN TIME! It was fucking fantastic and it made me stan so many of the older idols. Heechul and Bada became my OTP from that xD Similar feelings for XMan, though I only watched a few, but Shinhwa were beautiful on that show :'D

And I totally don't understand why they would axe such amazing shows for this BS. No one's really having fun, and no one actually watches the whole show. A lot of the older variety shows are better than whatever the hell is coming out nowadays, they should bring them back, even if they have to revamp it a little.
in_noctem 31st-Jan-2013 07:09 am (UTC)
Dream Team is far superior anyway. MBC shouldn't bother with this sports nonsense. I doubt 90% of the idols there care about getting a medal.

Glad B1A4 didn't take part this year. I wanted jinyoung and baro to slay the competition but concerts in Japan sound more fun anyway.

Edited at 2013-01-31 07:45 am (UTC)
missnothings 31st-Jan-2013 03:20 pm (UTC)
Same about B1A4. Glad they were off having fun in Japan with their concerts rather than being locked in a gym against their will for a whole day.
olive_101 31st-Jan-2013 07:27 am (UTC)
Why am I not surprised?
iznanassi 31st-Jan-2013 07:28 am (UTC)
the comments are so funny
21banged 31st-Jan-2013 07:43 am (UTC)
MBC y u such bastards. No wonder YG artists suddenly stopped going on its shows :(

tbh, I can't be stuffed watching the whole bloody thing. I did it once and severely regretted it. It's so intense and I doubt anyone has as much fun as they could be having. The show needs to be scrapped, I feel bad for the idols. Some are so young, and having staff pretty much disrespect you and essentially cage you up is just terrible. No one should have to unwillingly do this D:
twinkystar16 31st-Jan-2013 08:39 am (UTC)
MBC always hold grudges like this
i remembered back then they were butthurt when Yonghwa choose to be Inkigayo MC instead of Music Core MC,as a result, cnblue didn't get to appear on music core on one particular week because of that
annhh 31st-Jan-2013 09:25 am (UTC)
ikr. so ridiculous.

someone should out them in papers and news, really embarrass them.
lysblack 31st-Jan-2013 08:46 am (UTC)
this should end already, it hasn't been fun after the first time it was aired.

bring back the dance competition and friendly games.

and sbs, please bring back king of idols TT__TT
missnothings 31st-Jan-2013 03:22 pm (UTC)
Yessss on king of idols. I watched that when i first got into kpop and it helped introduce me to so many new groups. Lol. I loved it.
annhh 31st-Jan-2013 09:22 am (UTC)
what is up with the never ending need to control something that you shouldn't. grown men.

dance battles should return ^^ more fun
b1gay4 31st-Jan-2013 09:32 am (UTC)
