So, What Shade of Lipstick Did Jun Ji Hyun Wear on “Man From the Stars”?

We all know that television can spark fashion and beauty trends, but when’s the last time you heard about a K-Drama that caused an international cosmetic shortage? That’s just what “Man From the Stars” appears to have done. Almost two months after the final episode ended, consumers around the world are trolling makeup counters in the hopes of replicating the hue worn by the drama’s lead actress. But is the lipstick that they’re seeking actually the same one worn by Jun Ji Hyun? Let’s see if we can find out!

The Holy Grail: YSL Rouge Pur Couture in No. 52 Rosy Coral

Those who watched the drama probably noticed the gorgeous lip color that Jun Ji Hyun wore throughout the series — a bright shade of coral-based pink. Once the news broke that the color was YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture in No. 52 Rosy Coral, Korean fans snapped up tubes faster than Do Min Joon transporting to protect Cheon Song Yi. By late January, the color had completely sold out in Seoul. The YSL counter at Shinsegae Gangnam reported that they had moved 2,577 units that month alone, to the tune of 103 million won (about 96 thousand dollars). The demand for No. 52 soon spread overseas, catching the attention of media outlets worldwide. Elle Australia reported that one duty-free shopper at the Melbourne airport attempted to buy 52 tubes, while UK’s Daily Mail announced that fashion editors were scouring stores to try to find the color during the Fashion Weeks in Europe. Finally, a public relations representative at Yves Saint Laurent confirmed that the color had sold out as a result of “Man From the Stars.”

The National Bestseller: IOPE Water Fit Lipstick in No. 44 Forever Pink

However, obtaining Jun Ji Hyun’s lip color may not be as easy as shelling out a hundred dollars to a YSL reseller on eBay. Korea Herald reported that the actress never wore the lipstick on the show. According to an industry source, “The color of her lips cannot be produced by a single product. The makeup artist mixed a number of different (products), and YSL was not one of them.” One of the official sponsors of “Man From the Stars” was Korean cosmetic giant Amore Pacific, which reportedly considered taking legal action against YSL. Amore brand IOPE also confirmed that Jun Ji Hyun had worn three of their shades on the show. Of these, the most popular color turned out to be Water Fit Lipstick in No. 44 Forever Pink, sales of which doubled during the drama airing.

The Alternative: IOPE Color Fit Lipstick in No. 23 Violet Pink

Another shade confirmed by IOPE was Color Fit Lipstick in No. 23 Violet Pink, a strong fuchsia shade which was worn by Jun Ji Hyun during the stunt scene in Episode 14. (Also, if you needed any more proof of the actress’ selling power, just take a look at the trench coat worn in that same scene. Korean clothing company ShesMiss sold out of all 2,500 coats within days of the drama airing, prompting the brand to offer Jun Ji Hyun a two-year exclusive contract.)

The Dark Horse: IOPE Color Fit Lipstick in No. 18 Classic Red

Another IOPE lipstick, Color Fit Lipstick in No. 18 Classic Red, was advertised to have been worn by Jun Ji Hyun during the wedding scene in Episode 4. Last we checked, the shade was still readily available in stores throughout Seoul. We can’t say we’re totally surprised — women in Korea tend to prefer lighter-hued lipsticks. Nevertheless, it’s a gorgeous color.

The Unknown: YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in No. 105 Corail Hold Up, YSL Gloss Volupte in No. 202 Rose Jersey, YSL Gloss Volupte in No. 203 Corail Gandoura

Finally, various other YSL products have been said to be responsible for the fetching coral hue — it just seems that no one can agree on which one. A Naver search result shows “Cheon Song Yi lipstick color” being attributed to Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in No. 105 Corail Hold Up, as well as Gloss Volupte in No. 202 Rose Jersey and No. 203 Corail Gandoura.

Until YSL’s Rosy Coral and IOPE’s Forever Pink return to shelves, it almost seems a moot point to figure out Cheon Song Yi’s signature shade. We did come across one lucky beauty blogger who managed to find not one but both lipsticks, but the rest of us will probably have to wait — either for the stores to be restocked, or the next big K-Drama to provide us our newest source of beauty inspiration! Stay tuned!

What's your favorite Korean lip product(s)?
Also, am not sure if the 'beauty like oppa/noona' tag can be used for beauty posts that are not tutorials/original posts

I usually dont care for makeup in kdramas but the moment I saw that YSL scene I was in love, this is really sooooo pweeetyyyy!!!
benihime99 28th-Apr-2014 01:56 pm (UTC)
Isn't that article 2 weeks old?

Anyway... the YSL Rouge Pur Couture has very good reviews but it's definitely on the pricey end
Coral is very popular (was last year too if I remember) and it's better then this year color.
I mean, I do like radiant orchid but it doesn't work for everyone while coral usually compliment every skin tone, and it's very spring/summer

People made these articles back when the show was airing so I was quite surprised to just see it show up here

All these shades are so gorgeous ugh.
Reminds me, I bought an Etude lipstick the other day because I'd red good reviews and it was absolutely terrible.Applied like oil
in_noctem 28th-Apr-2014 02:06 pm (UTC)
I really hate Etude's lip products. There's a huge range and the packaging's really cute but they don't apply well at all. I'll stick to NYX for affordable but good lip products.

I've read so many good reviews about the YSL lip stains but they're so expensive ;_; But the colours are gorgeous.
yakuniku_8 28th-Apr-2014 02:27 pm (UTC)
Armore pacific looks like a good brand but it's very expensive... why do they want to take legal actions against YSL? Isn't it blogs which spread the rumurs?
tempestdance 28th-Apr-2014 02:47 pm (UTC)
because while YSL didn't say it outright that this is the lipstick JJH used, all the stores marketed the lipstick to their customers. so while they didn't lie, they definitely used it to their benefit.
imienazwisko 28th-Apr-2014 02:41 pm (UTC)
I recently watched Get It Beauty episode where two hillarious make up artists guested, one of them does JJH's make up. And when he did that 'half makeup, half bare face' thing that people do in that show, whatever product or technique he used, audience and hosts kept on asking 'is that what JJH is using?'.
yakuniku_8 28th-Apr-2014 04:05 pm (UTC)
haha she's the best advert!

I've been meaning to get a ysl lipstick for the longest while (bored of mac already) so it doesn't really matter that she never actually wore ysl. still looks like a good dupe.

btw, does anyone know if estee lauder lipsticks are any good?
iglossmyeyes 28th-Apr-2014 03:16 pm (UTC)
unpopular opinion i guess but i though lipstick game was really bad in you who came from the stars.

jeon jihyun looked fantastic with pastel shades, red and vibrant pink made her look older.
ashyvt 28th-Apr-2014 03:51 pm (UTC)
I recently bought my first lip tint thanks to the beauty post on omona and it's from tony moly, it was supposed to be cherry red but it looks pink on me ... but I really like it! I'm happy to be recommended any others too :) I'm liking the lip tints (y)
imienazwisko 28th-Apr-2014 06:09 pm (UTC)
lip tints are the best imho
actually to me it's a part of their charm that they look diff, maybe that's not great if you aimed at particular shade and it can be seen as a minus if the product. i prefer tints over lipsticks cause they don't wear off so fast and i have the habit of lip biting and pouting, no lipstick is able to stay for more than 30min max.
i always wanted to try the vdl gradient tint but shit it's waaay too expensive

I managed to get the YSL Number 52 and it looks amazing <3
jkkwai 28th-Apr-2014 04:41 pm (UTC)
i shelled out for the iope water fit lipstick ):
still dying for the ysl number 52 T_T

The only Korean lip product I've ever tried is lip gloss from Tony Moly.

Other than that, I stick to my collection of Revlon Lip Butters and Clinique Chubby Sticks.

Clinique Chubby Sticks are the best!
choconoir 28th-Apr-2014 05:09 pm (UTC)
the only lip product i've tried are lipsticks from missha - the ones with the fancy packaging lol. i like the color payoff with those but they really dry out my lips :\ i can't wear them unless i put some clear gloss on top. my lips are pretty finicky unfortunately, even revlon lip butters dry them out.

i really like toofaced la creme and tarina tarantino conditioning lip sheens though. those seem to work the best for me.
haesica 28th-Apr-2014 06:03 pm (UTC)
i need these in my life
love_keiko 28th-Apr-2014 06:04 pm (UTC)
i bought three mac lipsticks recently and i really love them.

i'm adoring this bold lip color trend going on i look damn good in reds and bright colors!
love_allure 28th-Apr-2014 07:36 pm (UTC)
i hate that they upped the price to $16 now. i ain't taking your shit mac.

i haven't tried korean brands, but i've been OBSESSED with mac's glam lipstick lately (the mac by request one, not viva glam). usually i use ruby woo for my bright red, but glam has this hot pink undertone that's to die for.

batterydead 28th-Apr-2014 06:35 pm (UTC)
im poor so i can only afford the low end brands like etude house, tony moly, etc. im currently in love with peripera's milky peach tint. it's just so cute and i'm a fan of coral tones.

i've been looking high and low to find a dupe to sonia kashuk's matte lip pencil in pinky nude. T_T i don't even care if i have to spend $40+ for this same color, i just want a freaking lipstick version of this friggin pencil color. who knew a random buy would turn to be my favorite everyday color. /sigh
kyutei 28th-Apr-2014 07:46 pm (UTC)
I'm starting to get into lip products after years of saying that I don't like them ugh my money. I haven't tried a lot but I really like my Maybelline Color Whispers. Benefit's lip tints are next on my things-to-try list.
missaoki 29th-Apr-2014 01:42 am (UTC)
Like most lip tint, Benefit's dries up your lips even though your are paying more than an average Korean brand. I switch to PeriPera red lip tint which is kinda similar and cost so much lesser, but more pigmented than Benefit

Another one is a brand I bought in Booth pharmacy in Thailand, called 17. It's really cheap and really good too, I use the their coral lip tint :)
the_erotomanic 28th-Apr-2014 08:13 pm (UTC)
i don't think the lipsticks she's wearing on those pics look flattering on her.
weerainbow 28th-Apr-2014 10:05 pm (UTC)
I have a couple of Tony Moly Petite Bunny Gloss Bars that I must admit I bought cos they're so cute lol but I ended up loving them and they feel really nice on my lips. Favourite lip product I've bought in a very long time, and the colour of the darker pink one is so good I'm planning on getting another for when I've used the first up :)

I also bought the Etude SHINee Star Lip Balm cos it was SHINee and I bought Onew's cos it's Onew (haha I have great reasons for my cosmetics) It's a little more like a gloss than balm because it's got that slightly sticky feeling but I still really like it (though not as much as the TM Bunny Gloss which now that I think of it is more like a balm cos it's not so shiny and it feels so good) and the colour comes out very nicely.
kicking_tenshi 29th-Apr-2014 01:28 am (UTC)
Korean make up products are just ridiculously cute and have all these random, cool gimmicks (e.g. colour-changing green/yellow lipsticks, water-drop face creams, both of which I've bought into) that I've never had much interest in makeup and even I own 3 Tony Moly Bunny gloss bars (because they're so FRIGGING cute).

How many do you own? I was looking at reviews and some of the colours look pretty similar so I tried to pick relatively different shades (Apple, Peach and Neon Yellow)
lovejae23 29th-Apr-2014 12:19 am (UTC)
i'm a dior stan when it comes to lip colors but ysl and make up forever are really good too
for drug store stuff i use Revlon a lot and they work well except their stains definitely do not last as long as they're advertised to
lovejae23 29th-Apr-2014 01:08 am (UTC)
since i'm procrastinating on a lot of shit i just tried to recreate the first pink look and it's pretty easy!
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

products I used:
Revlon colorburst lip butter strawberry shortcake (080) & sweet tart (090),
Revlon colorburst lacquer balm in Demure reservee (105)
MAC Creamsheen in Lickable

so i started by putting on
1. put on 080 all over lips
2. put on 090 all over but not on the edges
3. put on a very small amount of lickable right at the center and blend out a little bit
4. put on 105 on the edges

eh my lighting sucks haha but i don't think it's as bright and ~watery~as JJH's but i've never liked really bright pinks on me so i don't buy that many pinks... in fact i don't really use any of lip colors at all i'm just a makeup hoarder that must own everything OTL
yakuniku_8 29th-Apr-2014 07:25 am (UTC)
good job! are revlon lip sticks worth the price?
tsuyoi_hikari 29th-Apr-2014 03:20 am (UTC)
I actually thought her lipsticks in that drama is terrible and so obvious. Didnt know people were actually all over it.
