KARA only get paid $116 USD a month + Gyuri to attend press conference Feb 10th

11:22 pm - 01/31/2011

The agency and Kara are having issues because it was claimed that the members only received 130,000 won which is roughly 116 USD each.

On a program aired on MBC yesterday the 30th of January used “JYJ and Kara why would they?” to spotlight the issues between companies and their respective artists. This program had three members of Kara (Han Seung Yeon, Nicole, and Kang Ji Young) and a lawyer (Home Myung Ho) from Landmark. The lawyer said that “I understand the terms of the contract now after reading it, the members and their parents still don’t have an exact idea.” He continued that they did not know what the obligations were. He also revealed that when the company signed with Japanese labels, they keep around 273 million won (roughly $244,062 USD). The members have not received any of that payment and had no idea that the company was taking the money while signing the contracts.

The lawyer continued to state that although “Jumping” made about 400 million won, around 397 million won was labeled as expenses. He finished by saying that one member earning $116 a month was very hard to understand.

DSP Entertainment acknowledged that there were disagreements with the revenue-sharing. They said that they told the members they are take a little more because they are in the process of adjusting. Artists also make money from various endorsements so that is why the miscellaneous expense will be larger from the revenues sharing of the music aspect.

Netizens felt that more than 99% of earnings deducted to expenses seemed to be wrong. Also they felt that it was wrong for the companies to not explain the contracts in detail when the families did not completely understand them.

Gyuri has participated in voice dubbing for the animation, “Alpha and Omega” and on the 10th of next month, she will attend the movie opening premiere at Wangsimni CGV, Seoul. This is the first event that Gyuri officially involved in after the incident of KARA on 01/19.

The film distribution company said “Park Gyuri has decided to attend the opening premiere on the coming Feb 10th. Initially she was not sure if she could participate, but eventually she has arranged her schedule for the event.”

Gyuri participated in the voice dubbing of this film with Super Junior’s Shindong, who is her Radio DJ partner in Shimshintapa. With genes inherited from her mother, who is a voice actor, her voice expression was considered very natural even though it was her first time dubbing for an animation.

On February 10th, Kara's leader Gyuri will be attending a press conference for "Alpha and Omega". This will be her first time that any Kara member will be in any sort of a press conference since the incident started.

She will most likely be asked questions about the whole issue, especially because she was the only one at first to stand by DSP's side.

i mean, where i live 116USD is not a huge sum of money, but i could survive a month with that. I'm not sure what 130,000won can buy you in Korea
abortions 1st-Feb-2011 04:50 am (UTC)
damn i wanna live where u live. 116 bucks wouldnt be good for 3 days for me if i lived on my own
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 04:51 am (UTC)
lol, but to get 116USD here some people work a whole month. minimun wage is only a bit more than that, so it doesnt mean much.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 04:52 am (UTC)
*minimum
toomanysides 1st-Feb-2011 04:56 am (UTC)
wut, you can't rent any place with that much money.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 04:58 am (UTC)
in Brazil you can
cauliflower346 1st-Feb-2011 05:04 am (UTC)
about how much does it cost to rent a place in Brazil? Including taxes, water/electricity/ect bills?
O_O
And are your food costs really that low? I'm not sure I could even eat on a hundred bucks for a month.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 05:07 am (UTC)
lol, like i said, i could "survive" a month with that kind of money. you can get really cheap places for rental in poorer areas, and food isnt all that expensive, if you dont expect to eat out or have fancy meals.
cauliflower346 1st-Feb-2011 05:27 am (UTC)
Even if I were to to not eat out, and only buying the cheapest food items I could find- I'm not sure if I could eat off that much, while getting enough food to retain a healthy body.
(But I'm also not used to shopping for just myself, since I'm living with 5 family members. My idea of how much it would cost for just me to eat is a bit vague)

How much would a "students for a full meal including dessert and juice" be in real?
I can't even wrap my head around eating an entire meal for under a dollar. Such a dramatic change from what I'm used to @____@
Wow.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 05:33 am (UTC)
oh, a decent meal with dessert and something to drink would be around 7 dollars if you went to a nice cheap restaurant. if you were to prepare your own meal, you could do it with less and have rice+beans+meat+sallad, which is what i eat at the uni cafeteria. but the part of the country where i live has cheap meat, so thats possible.
fuuism 1st-Feb-2011 03:13 pm (UTC)
that would have to be a really poor area, haha. but yeah, food here is one of the good things as it isn't that expensive. we make this huge monthly buy at the market for 4 people at my house and it never goes beyond 290 dollars.
fuuism 1st-Feb-2011 03:21 pm (UTC)
including other household supplies, etc.*
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 03:56 pm (UTC)
depends on the city actually, some cities have really low living expenses. On a smaller city is possible to live with that kind of money.
fuuism 1st-Feb-2011 04:07 pm (UTC)
You're right, I was thinking more about the big towns. It's hard to get an appropriate estimate of the exact cost of living here because our states are so diverse and there's so much economic disparity. 116USD is still very low tho, it's sad how there are so many living with even less.
toomanysides 1st-Feb-2011 05:08 am (UTC)
i can't eat for less than $100 a week if i tried. okay maybe if i had ramen every meal. my mom would hunt me down and kill me (by kill me.. i mean never let me live alone and feed me personally) tho if she found out.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 05:11 am (UTC)
usually i eat at the University cafeteria, the price for students for a full meal including dessert and juice is around 0,93USD. I could survive for a long time with $100 here haha
toomanysides 1st-Feb-2011 05:14 am (UTC)
I probs couldn't get either that dessert or juice for a dollar.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 05:15 am (UTC)
and i have to work a lot to earn those 116USD, so its all even.
jcdhwg 1st-Feb-2011 12:05 pm (UTC)
Same here, an apple at my uni costs 80 cents (eur) which is 1$, a bottle of water 2,50EUR (3,40$),.. ITS SO OVERPICED!!!!
k0dama 1st-Feb-2011 08:22 pm (UTC)
oh. that explains everything.

in the US I spend over a hundred dollars a week easy, just by buying food and gas.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 08:34 pm (UTC)
you also take less time to get that amount of money there
cauliflower346 1st-Feb-2011 05:00 am (UTC)
Where on earth do you live?!? And do you not have to pay bills of any sort?
Because apparently I need to move there.
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 05:04 am (UTC)
i live in the 3rd world, our money is worth less than dollars. i could survive with 116USD, but not live a comfortable life.

it doesnt make sense to move here tho, lol.
cauliflower346 1st-Feb-2011 05:19 am (UTC)
Ohhh, okay. I was thinking of living on 116USD, using the.... worth of 116USD @-@;

I'm not serious about moving anywhere though :D
le_belle_vie 1st-Feb-2011 05:22 am (UTC)
but dollar is what keeps the economy going for countries like mine, so we depend on dollar worth to value our money. Thats why i asked about what can be done with 130,000 won because i dont have any idea. I know what can be done with 116USD in US or Brazil, but not in Korea.
