UGHHH THEY ARE GONNA BE SO AMAZING I KNOW THIS
cettefemme90 1st-May-2012 05:22 pm (UTC)
I hate how we always have to know their weight, and that they're ALL underweight more often than not :/

I mean, sure, if they don't want overweight people, fine (personally, I think if you can sing and dance, you should be allowed in, but it's Korea, so...), but what about the BMI 18.5-25 crowd? Y'know, healthy people*? I've heard some people say that a healthy Asian BMI is up to 23, but there is no-one even NEARING 23.

*Yes, I realise that people with a BMI over 25 and under 18.5 can still be (and often are) very healthy, I meant 'healthy' in the BMI sense. Yes, BMI is flawed, but it's clear that all these female idols are teeny-tiny. Please don't flame me!

/I have a BMI of 23.9 and K-Pop makes me feel horrifically fat.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That said, they're adorable and I will check them out. I like AS and NU'EST.

While I also want to see bigger girls and I agree weight shouldn't be made know to the public since the lie about it anyway in Kpop, shaming women for being smaller isn't the way. You have no idea about these girls health and you can even begin to know anything about their health by their weight alone. Wether you meant to or not your comment comes across as shaming and you at least kind of understood that since you went and gave all these reasons why your not shaming them.

Tl;dr there are ways of trying to say what you wanted to say with out shaming these girls for their weight
cettefemme90 1st-May-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
:( I get what you're saying and wholeheartedly agree...I deliberately tried to phrase it so it wouldn't come off as shaming :/ I mean, I was hardly 'oh these skinny bishes how dare they how unhealthy I like curvy girls'. What I meant was, while they may be healthy, the fact that nearly all of these idol girls are underweight promotes an unhealthy body image to girls who don't look like that, making them feel bad about the way they look, and possibly making them attempt to slim down beyond what is healthy (for them), which is bad. And we know that the girls don't always look like that naturally; idols are often told to diet and they dance for hours a day and don't sleep enough, etc.

I really didn't mean to sound horrible to the thin girls THEMSELVES :( sorry!

Does that make sense?
shineebambi 1st-May-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)
no i got what you were trying to say because it definitely promotes an ideal of women's beauty that is unobtainable for most especially when they lie about about their weights to seem skinnier then they are it was really just bad word choice. I really think if they are going to list weights which imo shouldnt be apart of their profiles anyway they shouldnt lie about it and specifically choose a lower number because that is what is considered ideal. I also wish girl groups in general would stop focusing on their diets when on talk shows etc etc but I think thats just me
cettefemme90 2nd-May-2012 12:34 pm (UTC)
Yeah, agree 100% with this comment.

Sorry, shouldn't have combined my feelings/ranting about my weight vs the K-Pop ideal with discussing how the ideal is harmful in general; it just came across a bit bitter and mean. Not how I meant it! :)
xcherryblossomx 1st-May-2012 08:10 pm (UTC)
If it makes you feel a little bit better.... some of them lie about their weight because 43, 46 and 47 are like magical korean weight numbers... IDK who admitted she was 50 kgs but listed as 46-47kgs by her agency.

cettefemme90 2nd-May-2012 12:36 pm (UTC)
Ah, ok. Well, it makes me personally feel better, but it has some unfortunate implications imo; they're promoting an ideal that even they themselves cannot achieve!

All a bit ridiculous, really.

But yeah, I don't see why we need their weight in profiles. We can tell they're slim!

On a personal level, it's just where I see idols nearly my height (I'm 5'11", but I mean like 5'6"-5'8") and they (supposedly) weigh 50kg or less when I couldn't even get below 60 if I tried (I'm just under 75kg/165lbs) and I *know* I'm no longer overweight, but I feel huuuge :p
feel_my_mind 2nd-May-2012 03:37 am (UTC)
Umm, well, off the top of my head. Hyosung from Secret has a "healthy" BMI, its 19.9. She revealed her real weight on tv show (the one with the scale and Tony), its 51Kg, so it could actually be higher if her profile height of 160 cm is exaggerated. Its probably closer to 20.5-21.

(WG's Hyelim, Aliee and actress Hwang Bo are also healthy (with their real weight, not profile weight), but they come in right around 18.5-19.1. Though, I'm not 100% about the real reveals either, since their all 50-52Kg)

So just don't believe the numbers.
cettefemme90 2nd-May-2012 12:37 pm (UTC)
Thanks :) Hyosung doesn't look any bigger than the other Secret girls to me, tbh.

It's really sad that they're promoting a level of thinness that even they can't achieve though...it just seems really wrong.
feel_my_mind 2nd-May-2012 01:55 pm (UTC)
Have you heard the term 'driver license weight?' Its basically means most people weight on their driver licenses about 10lb less then what it is in real life. (Or used to be, its now up to 20-30, but that society for you) They're not doing anything that woman/girls don't do in real life. Something about 45-48Kg is this magic sweet spot for kpop idols and like I said, I'm not buying the reveals either without a scale, because all their real weights are 50-52kg. Hyosung probably is about the same as the rest of Secret, she just the only one that was on a scale on television. So just remember when you do BMI for idols add about 5Kg and take off about 2-3cm.

(Though, some of them, and its pretty obvious which, are that light, for example scales say Yoona's weight is 48kg (she says 50kg btw) and Seohyun's is around 51kg. I also want to let you know that, despite what the first commenter said, I didn't find your statement offense at all and I'm one of those people whose BMI is lower that 18.5. I think you did a good job)
cettefemme90 3rd-May-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I can see people doing that. We don't put our height/weight on our licences here, just date of birth, photo and address. It seems a bit weird for the weight to be included, especially as it can fluctuate in a lot people (or, as you said, people can lie); I know it's to get a general sense of the person's physique so you know if it's them, but yeah, it's just an unfamiliar concept to me.

Thanks for the info, and thanks for saying that :) I was worried that I'd inadvertently offended people!

I think a lot of the statistics are full of crap, negl.

I've seen quite a few Kpop groups in person (Rainbow, SNSD, BEG, T-ara, etc.) and more than a few members looked healthy and actually curvy.

For example, Sunny from SNSD was pretty curvy and looked healthy- this could have to do with the fact that she was short though, lol.
cettefemme90 2nd-May-2012 12:40 pm (UTC)
fair enough...I wish if they *absolutely have to* give their stats they should tell the truth and stop adding a couple of cm and subtracting a few kilos...people might feel better about themselves if they know that their idols are of course thin, but not ridiculous, unattainable weights. Eh. Maybe idols are meant to seem perfect and to an unattainable standard. It's not good imo.

Not that the thinner girls aren't gorgeous, but Sunny's body is fricking hot. I think Hyoyeon is also a little thicker than some of the other members; she kind of has dancer's thighs. Again, hot :p or maybe it's just because they're short and stood next to Sooyoung :p
cettefemme90 2nd-May-2012 12:41 pm (UTC)
Btw, sorry to derail the thread with my insecurities about body image :p

Hello Venus are gorgeous and I'm looking forward to their music. I like Pledis more year on year, although I will never forgive them for taking away my Bekah.
