MBC KOREAN CULTURE FESTIVAL IN LONDON 2012 SUPER POST!

On Saturday 23rd June 2012, the MBC Korean Culture Festival took place at the indigO2 in London. The proceeds from the ticket sales went towards a charity for the British Korean War Veterans of the Korean War.

Fans from not only across the UK attended, but also fans travelled from France, Germany and Italy enjoyed the K-Pop fueled night. It was lovely to see everyone appreciate and show a lot of love for Korean folk songs, the stunning hanbok fashion show and K-music.

The headlining acts featured 4minute, Norazo and EXO K. Apart from these K-music acts, traditional korean folk musicians, dancers, fashion and a K-Pop dance cover group (Dae2Bak Movement) embraced the stage.

The festival kicked off with messages from various people on the screen, ‘Visit Korea’ promotional ads starring UEE and a montage of photos of Korea displayed with the instrumental of Arirang played in the background.

The traditional Korean drum band created a great opening to the festival with their amazing drum performance and dancing.

Soon after, 4minute teasers were up on the screen introducing us to each member. 4minute came on stage wearing matching outfits. Their concept of the evening was a grey patterned jacket, black top along with a two toned black and white chiffon maxi skirt which complemented their performance. The girls were impressive and sounded amazing live.

4minute gave a lot of fan service during the performance, they flashed their legs at any given opportunity, made heart signs, HyunA blew a kiss towards the audience and the group didn’t forget about the fans who were seated in the upstairs area.

The set list for 4minute was: Volume Up, Mirror Mirror, HUH and Hot Issue. After performing Volume Up, the members greeted the audience and introduced themselves one by one. Even though it was a short performance, it was sweet. They managed to hype up the audience throughout their whole set and asked the fans to sing along during the chorus of Hot Issue. Let’s hope 4minute will return to the UK again in the near future.

Once 4minute had finished their set, next up was traditional Korean dance and music. First on stage was soloist dancing to traditional music then the second act within the same genre was Queen. Queen are an extremely talented group of females where the musicians play traditional Korean instruments fused with modern music. This combination of genres brought a refreshing new twist to the traditional style. The instruments played were the violin, gayageum, haegeum and daegeum. Their concept and costumes for the night we simple, all the member wore white tops and layered purple, lilac and white puffed skirts.

Among their set list, Queen performed their rendition of the Mission Impossible theme tune, they incorporated their own choreography whilst playing the instruments, creating a fun and lovely stage. All the musicians in the group were fantastic, the violinist made playing the violin look effortless and her performance was flawless.

Samul Nori soon took over the stage once Queen had finished their performance. The word Samul Nori refers to the 4 percussion instruments being used to play traditional folk songs. The instruments used are called – Kkwaenggwari (a small gong), Jing (a large gong), Janggu (a drum) and Buk (a barrel drum). Each musician in SamulNori had their own solo moments displaying beautiful dance movements and their exceptional skills in playing their instruments.

The final act began with just the musician and her gayageum introducing the sounds of the popular traditional folk song Arirang. She was soon after joined by the talented vocalist, the rest of Queen, SamulNori and the first act dancing along. They all performed Arirang as their encore leaving the audience impressed and entertained.

Two members of 4minute, Hyuna and Gayoon appeared on stage as MCs to introduce Norazo. A teaser of Norazo showed up on screen introducing the members and they opened their set with Happy Song.

Norazo’s attire for their performance were football shirts which had ‘Norazo Korea’ printed on the front. Norazo got the crowd hyped up and going with their eccentric showcase of their songs, the dancing was brilliant and Lee Hyun’s vocals were on fire, he gave me goosebumps.

Jo Bin threw his sunglasses and football shirt into the crowd. One lucky fan managed to catch the football (signed by Norazo, 4minute & EXO K) Jo Bin kicked into the audience during one of the songs.

Norazo’s setlist was Happy Song, Curry, The Sales King and Superman. After a performance like that Norazo definitely have expanded their fan base.

Dae2Bak Movement the K-pop cover group gave an exceptional performance.

They started off their performance on stage together, once the girls left the guys continued and covered of Shinhwa’s Venus and Dalmatian’s ER. They then switched over and the girls came on stage and covered SNSD TaeTiSeo’s Twinkle and Wonder Girls’ Be My Baby. The guys gave their own fan service during their Dora Dora cover, as a whole group their covers to k-pop songs were great. Dae2Bak Movement covered the following songs:
  • Shinhwa – Venus
  • Dalmatian – ER
  • SNSD TaeTiSeo – Twinkle Twinkle
  • Wonder Girls – Be My Baby
  • U-KISS – Dora Dora
  • T-ara – Roly Poly
  • Kim Hyun Joong – Breakdown
  • BAP – Warrior
  • and ended the performance with Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby.

MCs HyunA and Gayoon returned on stage to introduce the next part of the festival, they were wearing colourful modern hanboks as a hint of what was to come. The hanboks they wore were designed by Park Sul Nyeo, and the fashion included 4minute as well.

Park Sul Nyeo’s hanbok fashion show featured various styles of hanboks. This included royal hanboks that the King, Queen, Crown Prince and Princess’ would wear as well as clothing of the officials. The royal hanboks that appeared first were modelled by three couples, each couple wore the same hanbok but in three different colours red, purple and white. All the hanboks had a traditional korean pattern embroidered and printed in gold.

Ceremonial hanboks worn for weddings were modelled and finally modern hanboks which kept a traditional look. Some of the modern hanboks had a summer theme, pastel colours (pink, yellow, coral) were present and a lighter material was used. Towards the end, the white hanboks modelled had korean art (tiger and dragon imagery) printed on the material.

The models were not only dressed in hanboks but were also dressed in traditional attire from head to toe. This included the men wearing long beards, wearing the kings crown and officials’ hats and belts also known as Gakdae. For the women, they wore hairpins which were made from beads and metal and baetssi, the makeup was kept simple with the exception of the ceremonial hanbok model who wore yeonji gonji. The footwear worn were beoseon and gomusin.

All the hanboks presented on the catwalk were exceptional and beautiful, it was hard to pick a favourite.

After the fashion show, Hyuna and Gayoon returned to the stage for the final time to introduce the last act of the evening, EXO K. Even before EXO K came on stage, fans were chanting for them to appear. Fan signs for EXO K appeared in the audience as their teaser video played on the screen and the majority of fans waved their green glowsticks in support as EXO K came on stage to perform their first song of the evening, History.

They greeted the audience and introduced themselves one by one just like the acts before them. They then gave a beautiful performance of Into Your World (Angel). The choreography in this song was the same as their teaser #23, it was great to watch it live and see it hadn’t gone to waste. The members didn’t have matching outfits, each one had their own but similar in style and colours. The guys then gave a mesmerizing performance of their debut song, MAMA as their encore. It was a great ending to the festival. EXO K’s set list for the festival was: History, Angel and MAMA.

EXO-K - History

EXO-K - Into Your World (Angel)

EXO-K - MAMA

Confetti was thrown in the air as all the festival’s acts returned to the stage as the festival ended. It was such an enjoyable event, I don’t think anyone wanted it to end.

Overall, the MBC Korean Culture Festival was amazing, fun and enjoyable. I hope all artists, musicians and acts return to the UK in the near future and hopefully, MBC will plan more culture events like this.

This was the best weekend of my life (minus the terrible run ins with EXO fans) ♥

4minute girls were flawless, Norazo was such a roof raiser and EXO was okay too! I just wish they performed live more.
devilsatin 27th-Jun-2012 03:48 am (UTC)
what run ins?
dapo322 27th-Jun-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
I see that last EXO fancam is back after she took it down. There was some issues with that video.
anconeous 27th-Jun-2012 03:33 am (UTC)
Ugh. I hate how she was literally in their faces. And OMG how she said "Thehun!" right in front of Sehun.

I can't with this fancam.
devilsatin 27th-Jun-2012 03:30 am (UTC)
Great post! Looks like fun :-)

EXO hasn't even been out for 3 months and their fans are already the worst. I got so much secondhand embarrassment watching their fancams... I hope those gurls (and all exo fans in general tbh) are ashamed of themselves
mangomuffins 27th-Jun-2012 03:36 am (UTC)
yeah it was kinda scary to me that they literally swarmed exo omg... they don't give them ANY personal space at all D: and when they made fun of sehun for his lisp right in front of them, i thought it was mean :(
in_noctem 27th-Jun-2012 03:39 am (UTC)
Oh god just reading the fan accounts of those who followed Exo around made me cringe so hard, I can't believe I watched even 20 seconds of that fancam. It's ridiculous that these fans don't even get the sense that the guys don't want to be bothered. Like, how can you be so dense? Props to the fans who didn't stalk them and shove cameras/themselves into the guys faces.

In other news, I will forever love Into Your World.

mte. as soon as i heard that girl yelling buing buing i couldn't. that's just disrespectful, those boys aren't toys for her or anyone else's enjoyment.
reemgirl 27th-Jun-2012 03:46 am (UTC)
Miffed I missed 4minute, but glad I didn't have to go into this clusterfuck. My cousin got choked out because she complained about EXO's 'live singing' after the concert like wtf? These EXO stans need to be euthanised.
xxmannequin 27th-Jun-2012 04:03 am (UTC)
Those EXO fancams.. The fans literally followed them everywhere and shoved the cameras in their faces. I was really uncomfortable while watching. I mean, just looked at that one girl trying to sneak up to Kai and get a picture with him. And I cringed so much on their descriptions like one girl saying Kai was super enthusiastic and happy (and you can see that he was really tired and he barely smiled), and other guys enjoying their fame.. ugh??

on another note, i LOVEEE what d.o and beakhyun wore during their performances. omg, d.o's moves :Q______ and kai's arms. unf.

wow 4minute is so perfect and queenly.

and exo fans need to be tranquilized. 4nia are a prime example of how fans should act.
tiggie0307 27th-Jun-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
Kai's fan-service was so cute! I can't wait to see all the acts when the whole show airs.
unparalleledxvi 27th-Jun-2012 04:39 am (UTC)
Secondhand embarrassment for all of those exo fans. I can't believe they cared so little about their idols' personal space. I just really don't understand how you can be a fan and subject them to something like this. When exo was walking around London, the fans literally followed them the entire time and got completely in their faces; they were incredibly rude. And ugh, listening to them talk to exo was awful; I can't even make it through the entire fancam. Can't you wait to be all fangirly until after they aren't standing right in front of you?

Seemed like an awesome event! I like that there were only a few acts, it seemed more...personal, idk the word lol.

and smh at the EXO fans. Yeah, not all of them are like that, blah blah, but...cmon. Disneyland was creepy, but this is just even worse. Way to make us look like nice people. British EXO fans that were there are bitching on tumblr about how 'tame' it was, but anyone can see that the situation was not tame.

And seriously? Calling Sehun 'Thehun' to his face? What the fuck?

TAME? REALLY? smdh

So happy to see EXO perform Into Your World again. It's such a beautiful song but it feels funny watching the dance because their other halves aren't there. Amazed they were the last K-Pop act since I would've thought that 4minute would be the doing it. Norazo was amazing and so pumped watching them work it.

Got to say though, I'm so fucking miffed at that EXO "fancam". Seriously! There are a few of us that aren't like these ingnorant imbeciles (sadly, not everyone here thinks so) and it makes me SO mad the way they treated them and made claims of other intl fans as "jealous". The girl who filmed it was deluded as fuck if she didn't see anything wrong!

As KyungSoo puts it,

wowwh 27th-Jun-2012 05:16 am (UTC)
idk, it looks like d.o. is saying eat your burger...
swhyeon1991 27th-Jun-2012 05:12 am (UTC)
lol Kai looked so pissed in that fancam
shocko_o 27th-Jun-2012 05:23 am (UTC)
great fancams!
i love suho and do's voices, and angel looks lovely with choreography live.
charlotterhys 27th-Jun-2012 06:00 am (UTC)
Could you please use a different fancam for EXO? I know I've seen a lot of different ones that were much less obtrusive. That is the single WORST fancam I've seen from that entire day, and it sends a really bad message about EXO fans. Even if there were a lot of crazies (and yes, there were, I know), having the one EXO video you show being one of the worst is offensive.

In other words... I love hanbok. <3 They were so pretty.
angela_derp_otp 27th-Jun-2012 07:37 am (UTC)
ikr? That fancam created a huge conmotion in fandom, everyone side eyeing the fuck out of those people, is not like everyone in the exo fandom endorses and promotes that behavior. :|
kidsalsa20 27th-Jun-2012 07:29 am (UTC)
4Minute was great and looked like they were enjoying themselves :) my bb Sohyun had so much swag in that Huh performance, I miss those promotions so much
angela_derp_otp 27th-Jun-2012 07:43 am (UTC)
Ugh those EXO fans in London and the chinese/korean sasaengs following them like crazy was just horrible, and makes me feel so much 2nd hand embarrassment especially when the fans want to 'excuse' their behavior. Not everyone in fandom is like that but I honestly couldn't care less about generalizations I know plenty of sane and mature exo fans.

But honestly, that fancam? Disgusting, invasive, disrespectful. Ugh. Flipping all the tables.
xredada 27th-Jun-2012 08:25 am (UTC)
I went for Exo and 4minute but left the concert a huge norazo fan! They were great live performers and had the whole audience dancing in their seats and singing along. Here i thought they would get no love but damn, they were AMAZING!

Exo fan situation isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. I mean, from what i watched all the boys seemed really happy with the attention and it's wasn't like fan restricted their movements in any way. Most wouldn't follow them into shop and shiz.
iksagor 27th-Jun-2012 09:58 am (UTC)
Inside "jokes" need to stay inside for a reason. Some of these fans... beyond ridic. Especially after some of them justify what they did saying 'oh, the boys liked it' or they have 'seen much worse' LOL, um. Sigh. After letting that out I shall say that I love Angel so much :3 Such a beautiful song.
miszmba 27th-Jun-2012 11:25 am (UTC)
I know fans were following Exo for all 4 days and they act like it's perfectly normal, it's kind of scary. I get that they want to see their idols but 5 mins would be enough not freaking 4 days of stalking. They even followed them outside their hotel, into shops etc :|

Nevertheless, the concert was awesome and Hyuna waved at me which was probably the highlight of the concert for me :D
cottonowl 27th-Jun-2012 01:19 pm (UTC)
lol how didn't I know about this? Oh well, too broke anyway.
shineesbright Became a 4NIA after this tbh27th-Jun-2012 01:26 pm (UTC)

And i appreciate there were a lot of crazy EXO stans but it's a bit ridiculous to claim we're all the same.
