CL calls Korean singers “more passionate” than American and Japanese singers

In a recent interview, CL expressed her feelings on why K-Pop artists have popularity overseas:

Why do you think foreigners like 2NE1 & Kpop?

“The passion for music that Korea has cannot be easily found anywhere else. As compared to singers in Japan and USA, our (Korean) singers are more passionate. 2NE1 has been mixing eastern and western genres of music. The trot melody (that I Love You has) is one of those efforts.” (CL)

Man, the worst is when people who thrive due to sheer hype start to buy into their own hype and believe the shit that’s being spewed.

It’s like being a drug dealer and using your own shit. You’ve jumped the shark after that, you know?

Pro-Tip: When you’re an underdog, people tend to root for you. When you’re an underdog and you act like you already run shit, people laugh at you for being delusionally entitled.

Just saying.

I'm a huge 2NE1-fan, but I'm side-eying CL for this comment. There are passionate singers all over the world, not only in Korea. -.-''
asnindie 9th-Jul-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
I wonder if you can hear passion over Autotune?
violetchoux 9th-Jul-2012 03:33 pm (UTC)
Lol wow ok

minakuu 9th-Jul-2012 03:39 pm (UTC)
bitch please, listen to japanese vocalists like Yuna Ito, Ayumi Hamasaki or Koda Kumi.. there are far more too.
minakuu 9th-Jul-2012 03:40 pm (UTC)
even though ayu sounds not that good now, she still sings most of the korean vocalists into the ground
chibiyunie 9th-Jul-2012 03:41 pm (UTC)
People pull this way out of proportion. Sigh.
lightasadream 9th-Jul-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)

luan slays me evertime...lol
sexyryu28 9th-Jul-2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
Oh please *eyeroll*

Every artist from whichever country will say something similar, not just artist but common folk too. It's the pride from being born in XY country. "Nobody sings/dance/cooks like *insert country*"

I wish people stopped hanging on to every word so literally and making every comment so negative. Really, it makes some of us pull away from fandoms.

OH CL pleas say they're just quoting you wrong
k0dama 9th-Jul-2012 04:10 pm (UTC)
Actually, now that I know she expressed it in Korean, I kind of understand.

Gotta keep your home fans happy.

If she failed to mention anything Korean singers did better, her Korean fans would throw a fit, call her a 2nd gen, tell her to leave the country, etc.

It's kindda weird that the comments from AsiaJunkie OP are directly after CL's quote.
Makes the whole thing weird.

"When you’re an underdog, people tend to root for you. When you’re an underdog and you act like you already run shit, people laugh at you for being delusionally entitled."

But they do "run shit" in Korea, which is where this interview was held and it was done for Koreans.
2NE1 is hardly underdog in Korea.
kiminikaeru 9th-Jul-2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
they only run shit in KOREA though
honeebs 9th-Jul-2012 04:15 pm (UTC)
Oh you silly girl.
k0dama 9th-Jul-2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
I don't think a word-for-word literal translation is fair for CL in this case. She's being interviewed in Korea for Korean fans.

You have to consider the context and environment (Crazy nationalistic Korea) in which it was said.

외국인들이 왜 2NE1과 K팝을 좋아할까.
(Why do you think foreigners are interested in 2NE1 and in K-pop in general?)

“한국만큼 음악에 열정을 쏟는 나라는 없다. 미국이나 일본보다 우리 가수들이 훨씬 열정적이다. 2NE1은 동양과 서양 음악 장르를 혼합해왔다. 서양문화를 좋아하면서도 한국 문화를 넣으려고 애쓴다. 트로트 멜로디도 그런 노력의 하나다.”(씨엘)
("I think there isn't a country that puts in as much passion into their music as Korea. Some of our singers are far more passionate than some of the singers in the US or Japan, and I think foreign fans like 2NE1 because we're always trying to find a balance between music from the east and the west. While we do like western culture, we always try to incorporate some of the cultural aspects from Korea. Adding a "Trot" like beat to our latest single is one of those efforts.")

For those of you who don't really read Korean, the whole interview has been paraphrased, and the sentence endings(이다) are not natural of normal speech.

In other words, it'd been edited down for the article so that it would fit. It's not the actual interview word for word but just the gist of what was said.
