X-5 leaves Open World Entertainment + member Ghun enlists into military

Boy group X-5, who made their debut in 2011, is said to have ended their contracts with their agency, Open World Entertainment.

A source close to the group revealed on the 5th that “all the members of X-5 were released from their contracts 2~3 months ago without any conditions.

The group debuted with their album ‘Xenos‘ last year and caught attention with their stage manners and their impressive tall heights as the tallest boy group in the industry. Since then the group had been promoting going back and forth between Korea, Japan, and China.

However, with the Open World Entertainment CEO’s crimes of sexual assault against female trainees coming to light, the boys had no choice but to stop their activities.

While the group was on hiatus, it turns out leader Ghun has enlisted in the army. According to the source, Ghun is said to have quietly enlisted on December 4th to begin his two years of service.

The source stated, “Last week, before Ghun left, he said his farewells to those around him. With his heart feeling perplexed with the events that have taken place, he wanted to get the issue of military service over with.

Thus, the future of X-5 is currently uncertain. On the issue of breaking up, the source commented, “It’s a little too early to comment about that.

The members and their parents are thinking towards the direction of having them continue to all promote together… Their former agency has also allowed them to continue using their group name,” the source added.

so I guess at this rate we're never going to find out who the male idols were who also sexually assaulted the female trainees. ugh :(

If they really had nothing to do with the sexual assault scandal, then I really pity them. OWE basically threw them under a bus by not making any statements about them and now they're being left to fend for themselves. Not knowing for sure whether or not they were involved is going to make it tough for any of them to get anywhere in the idol industry after this.

I believe OWE made a statement saying X-5 had nothing to do with it?

Ugh this is extremely disappointing, they were really promising :\
chunsakuma 7th-Dec-2012 12:46 am (UTC)
They were so good ;_; I guess we'll never know if any of them were involved...

Oh no! Ghun!!! :(
Ugh to their great start getting tossed to the side pretty much.
honeebs 7th-Dec-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
I was really hoping they could turn this around. Glad that OW gave them their name. It's going to be hard because Ghun is gone for 2 and the rest of those pretty bitches are going to have to go. So they will never be all 5 for another 10 years. >.> Doable but hard.
Maybe not, Taefung gives hope they will return.

If I were PR/management for a (male) group "caught" in a scandal like this, I would totally chuck them all in the military. Rather than fight public perception to gain favor, it seems like it would be less effort to go serve your country (since you have to anyway) and let ppl forget about you for a while (especially if you've lucked out of actually being charged). Then you can try again after your service, and if you manage to do ok on the second attempt, you won't have to interrupt your momentum by having everyone go serve when you're actually seeing some success. (Assuming PR/management felt like the group were worth the effort, anyway. There's a billion more trainees where those came from, even if they may not be as tall!)

On the other hand... any publicity is good publicity? I'd never heard of X-5 before this.

On the third hand, how ironic would it be to promote a group called "X-5" with four members.

I'm not sure that's as true in SK as elsewhere, since in kpop the music itself is a loss-leader for CF revenue. Any random omonan becoming aware of them isn't going to translate into significant $$$, and even if companies had already figured out how to efficiently monetize international markets that doesn't help the nugu.

(I was aware of x-5 prior to the OWE thing, but I guess the only song I like (of the few I heard) is going crazy. Am v amused by the man!cleavage-clutching move (0:33 for first instance). Other than that, I knew they were tall and awkward at dancing, which I assumed was why they went for the fangirl-pandering moves like in dangerous, which was from a performance standpoint a terrible choice of song to promote. Vocals are just average.)

Of course, Nine Muses did this for a while. XD

Let this be a lesson that you should never name your group after the number of members!

And your points above are well taken XD.

And Five Girls went to No Girls! :D

Seems odder to do it with guys though, when you know they have to go off to the military sooner or later. I suppose the hope is that the group would be successful enough to spin out to individual activities/the group would have more or less run its course by then anyway....
yunhalove 7th-Dec-2012 01:28 am (UTC)
what about DGNA? are they free? I know they're still with the same company in Japan but I hope their contract has ended as well.
mikansama 7th-Dec-2012 03:19 am (UTC)
There were some rumours a while back saying that they'd left OWE, signed with another agency and might make a comeback once everything dies down. No idea where that came from or how legitimate it is but I hope it's true.
