Detailed numbers of Rain‘s vacation days have been revealed, causing more criticism to arise for the singer.
Rain began his service as a member of the Defense Media Agency of the Ministry of National Defense in March of 2012. For the 300 days in the Defense Media Agency, he took 17 stand-down days, 10 unofficial overnight stays, and 44 official overnight leaves for a total of 71 vacation days, which averages out to a day off every 4.22 days.
According to the government, he took 25 days off to record music out of the 44 official overnight leaves. However, he was not accompanied by any of his superiors, and for many days he did not even return when he was supposed to. A government representative said, “There were many cases where he recorded late at night because it is very expensive to use the recording studio during the day. However, these issues were raised last year, and since October we have been forbidding overnight stays in Seoul.”
Also, before his transfer to the Defense Media Agency, Rain served 150 days in the regular army and it was reported that he took 25 days off during that time frame. With this added number, he took 94 total days off out of the 450 total days he was in the military. So far, he has not used up his 3 official vacation days.
Currently, his case is being further investigated. Rain has currently halted all activities and is on standby.

Rain‘s label spoke out on Rain’s alleged overuse of vacation days and special treatment during his military service.
To recap, Rain was given 71 days away from base. This number includes the 17 days of time off as a form of reward for his services in the military including those that he earned from going on various military related performances and promotional events, and 10 overnight leaves, and 44 duty-related outings. It is currently being looked into whether the 44 outings were overnight stays or whether they were just brief outings.
It’s said that Rain’s number of days off are actually normal, especially for a celebrity soldier, who is given duties that take place off base frequently such as hosting military radio programs and going on military promotional events.
Although it’s not clear whether Rain used some of his duty-related time to see his girlfriend Kim Tae Hee at the time, it is clear that he did violate a military dress code that requires soldiers to have the full uniform on even when about in public. In the paparazzi pictures of him and Kim Tae Hee, Rain was clearly not wearing the cap to complete his uniform, and thus, he will have to be answering to that violation.
In response, Rain’s label said, “As a soldier, it was wrong for Rain to go without his hat. No matter how many times we think about it, it’s wrong. Even though we may just be appealing to emotions, but he had no bad intentions. He is young and he made the mistake because he got caught up in the end-of-the-year mood. He is very repentant of his actions. No matter what the Ministry of Defense says, he will humbly carry out their orders.”
However, on the subject of vacation days and alleged special treatment, they stated, “He’s being accused of being specially treated by the Ministry of Defense, and really, we feel that we have been wrongly accused in many areas. His vacation days increased because he became a celebrity recruit. He never used them for bad reasons.”
The latest reports have revealed that the disciplinary committee of the military will be holding a session to review Rain’s case to see if there are any other violations, and it is expected that they might be making changes to the amount of leaves celebrity soldiers are allowed with the public’s interest heightened about this issue.

Rain‘s actions have come under fire again.
Recently, Rain has been confirmed to have stayed at a luxury hotel after an event at Jeju Island. Because regular soldiers stay at motels or nearby meeting halls in cases of emergency, the fact that Rain was allowed to stay at a luxury hotel suite that was paid for is fanning the flames to rumors that celebrity recruits are given special treatment.
According to a statement made by the Ministry of Defense on the 7th, Rain and KCM stayed at ‘C’ hotel in the royal suite room. The hotel offers seven different kinds of rooms that cost from 150,000 KRW to 600,000 KRW (approximately 141 USD to 565 USD) nightly. Rain was revealed to have stayed in the most expensive royal suite room with KCM that cost 600,000 KRW for one night. According to the rules of the Defense Media Agency, the celebrity recruits’ dorm fees are provided by the army, and an executive commander was to have stayed with them. However, the hosts of the event reasoned that they should be comfortable and had them stay in a luxurious hotel instead.
A Ministry of Defense representative explained, “Usually when celebrity recruits have performances in other places, they stay at motels and the money is provided by the Defense Media Agency. In the case of Rain, it is true that he stayed at the hotel in June after his Jeju Island concert. However, the money was provided for by the event hosts, Korea Cable Television & Telecommunications Association.”
Rain and other celebrity recruits have been revealed to have stayed at hotels in other cases as well. In November, they stayed at another luxurious hotel. A representative from the army said, “Even if the money was provided from the outside, it is never acceptable for a soldier to stay at an outside hotel, while he is on duty.”
However, the Minstry of Defense then told TV Report, “Rain stayed at Jeju Island because of an event. 49 people slept over, including 26 workers and 11 directors of the Defense Media Agency. Workers from the Defense Media Agency were with Rain, and they slept together because of their task. People are saying that Rain and KCM stayed together by themselves, but that makes no sense. About 5-6 people slept in the same suite. Also, it was not a luxurious hotel. The hotel cost about 600,000 KRW and was paid for by the Cable Association. Even the soldiers assigned to drive stay with the workers when they are not on base, so they stay at a hotel. This happens often in the army. You can’t pick out every incident. The Ministry of Defense cannot sentence Rain to disciplinary actions because he stayed at a hotel."

The Ministry of National Defense has decided to give Rain a one-week probation.
The global star has been in the news lately for issues concerning holidays and favorable treatment for celebrities in the military. He’ll be confined to the army base for one week of self-reflection.
The Ministry of Defense stated, “After a decision by the disciplinary committee of his unit, Rain will be confined to his [barracks and the army base] for seven days of [self-reflection and introspection]… He violated regulations by having private meetings while on official duty.”
After photos of Rain on a date with actress Kim Tae Hee surfaced online earlier this year, many messaged the ministry’s website calling for the star to be disciplined.
Rain, who enlisted in mandatory military service on October 11, 2011, will return to civilian life this coming July.
