MBC’s ‘Idol Star Athletics Championship’ films for 22 hours, draws complaints

The latest rendition of MBC’s ‘Idol Star Athletics Championship‘ filmed for a record of 22 hours yesterday (28th), drawing complaints from staff members and entertainment representatives.

The filming started at 7:00 AM, which required the participating competitors to wake up at 4:00 AM to begin makeup and hair conditioning. Despite the fun atmosphere that occurred once the filming began, the recording time soon sped past the stated finishing time of 2:00 AM the next morning, and final filming only wrapped up at 5:00 AM – which meant that the idols had been on set for nearly a full day.

The competitors who had been eliminated early also weren’t allowed to leave the set, requiring them to waste valuable time when they could have been taking care of other schedules.

A representative for an entertainment company bemoaned this bloated filming session: “Our idols had five schedules the day after the Championship recording,” he complained. “I don’t know if they’ll be able to finish them being so tired.”

Another representative echoed these sentiments, saying “it was nearly imprisonment, not allowing the early eliminated idols to leave”.

I like your icon.. but it will never happen anytime soon /sobbing in a corner/

It's ridiculous how it lasted that long. And the fact that the idols eliminated early weren't allowed to leave. What's the point? If a whole team has early eliminated idols, they should've been sent home after all their events were done. Not like they have a chance at winning in the end anyway.

And poor fans who were there the whole time or stayed as late as they could. Freaking dangerous to have people going home late on their own.

Especially because it wasn't in Seoul and finished after the trains and buses already stopped..
akillarian 29th-Jan-2013 08:19 am (UTC)
So many shows take a ridiculous amount of time to film.
anconeous 29th-Jan-2013 08:26 am (UTC)
Yeah. I remember reading somewhere that shows like Star King, Strong Heart, and even Star Golden Bell back in the day would film for 9 hours or so. Ridiculous when they're only one-hour shows.

22 hours o_____________________________o
and wtf if they don't have to be there why are MBC keeping them there like hostages? o__O

And awake for 25 hours! That's absurd, and surely it goes against labour laws, especially considering a large number of idols are minors.
scubajr 29th-Jan-2013 03:27 pm (UTC)
I don't know of SK having any labour laws protecting minors from working ridiculous hours. I know in Japan, minors aren't allowed to work past a certain time. I think it's 11pm? I could be wrong.
in_noctem 29th-Jan-2013 08:41 am (UTC)
Idg why they couldn't split the event into two days and have groups attend either day.
bauci 29th-Jan-2013 03:13 pm (UTC)
mte especially because then the idols would give better results on events. Half asleep and tired people running is not my idea of good entertainment.

I saw a bunch of fanaccounts on tumblr about how b.a.p were basically taking turns sleeping... poor babies. ^^;;

Maybe they don't want to let early eliminations leave early because they need them for some pictures at the end and/or they don't want ppl throwing their matches (would they really do that?!) just so they can escape? >.>
modestgoddess79 29th-Jan-2013 05:24 pm (UTC)
this should be illegal, Zelo is still a growing child!

hmm :/
idols' schedules are mad crazy, I hope at least those eliminated were allowed to somewhat rest and nap? (even if it was on the floor, benches, or whatever)
cuz lbr even if they could leave early, their management would just shove them elsewhere (events, cf making, etc) or back to the practice room where they'd get 2 hrs of sleep or less by the end of the day anyway.
jasmineakaiumi 29th-Jan-2013 09:29 am (UTC)
I wondered the same. If I had lost I'd just go to a bench and pass out, make up for the loss of sleep I've had all of my career.
lonelymoon 29th-Jan-2013 09:06 am (UTC)
Wtf, can't they just split it up into several days?
scubajr 29th-Jan-2013 03:32 pm (UTC)
obeytheempress 29th-Jan-2013 09:09 am (UTC)
yeah i also don't understand why it wouldn't be split over twp or three days, wtf
rylee900 29th-Jan-2013 09:17 am (UTC)
So they were awake for 25 hours, at least. With probably very little sleep before.
Stuff like this makes me so sick and sad :(
aluminiumorange 29th-Jan-2013 09:30 am (UTC)
That is ridiculous. You'd think they would plan better for something they put on every year.

Didn't the exo m kids have a schedule in china the day before, then flew back attended boa's concert then...went to this as well?
anconeous 29th-Jan-2013 10:08 am (UTC)
Yup. China, plane, the straight to BoA's concert. Woke up a few hours later to attend this. Luhan and Tao are probably running on endorphins and caffeine these past few days.
hellicoptajuuce 29th-Jan-2013 09:50 am (UTC)
how long does the show actually go for though, like 3 hours? they couldve done that shit in max 7 hours there is no way it needs to take 22 hours unless they are constantly redoing everything for da lolz
bunica1990 29th-Jan-2013 02:03 pm (UTC)
They even had trial runs and jumps, which I thought was unnecessary.
