Hip hop artists Swings and Bumkey, both Brand New Music artists, have been selected as the “HIPHOPPLAYA Awards 2013” Artist of the Year and R&B Artist of the Year, respectively.
HIPHOPPLAYA is an online hip hop community site supported by hip hop enthusiasts and has played a pivotal role in the development of the Korean hip hop scene for a long time. Unlike regular award ceremonies, the “HIPHOPPLAYA Awards” differentiates itself by handing over judging authority over to hardcore music fans.
Swings took home 41.76% of the vote in the Artist of the Year category, crushing his competition in the form of Beenzino (16.99%) and Paloalto (16.20%). His album “Swings #1 Mixtape Vol. 2” came in second place in the Album of the Year category, while the single “Bulldozer” was also in second place in the Single of the Year category. “Hwang Jungmin” took home first and third place in the Verse of the Year category, so it looks like Swings had the last laugh in the “Control” diss battle of 2013.
The title of R&B Artist of the Year went to Bumkey (33.89% of the votes), who had two major hits last year in the form of “Bad Girl” and “Attraction” and is currently preparing for a debut as the main vocalist for Troy, a hip hop group by Brand New Music.
Brand New Music revealed, “The two artists are truly thankful to have received the wholehearted support of true hip hop fans at these awards. We will continue to respect their individual color and individuality and work hard to repay fans with better music.”
[Artist of the year]
First place: Swings (41.76%)
Second place: Beenzino (16.99%)
Third place: Paloalto (16.20%)
Taking the majority of the votes, Swings claimed the title as Artist of the Year. The year 2013 was a busy year for Swings: starting the year by dropping his mixtape [Swings #1 Mixtape Vol.2], competing in the second season of Show Me The Money, followed by Control and finishing the year with Bulldozer. As always, Swings is keeping busy with his record label Just Music and as an artist for Brand New Music.
Q: Through an overwhelming poll you’ve been selected as Artist of The Year. During the year, you went on without a break. How would you self-evaluate 2013?
A: I was weak during 2 years, 2012 and 2011. Musically and mentally I was very immature so I suffered a lot and felt very inferior. Then, 2013 came, I said ‘I really have to put myself together’ and I ran through the year, if I look back, it was just really fun. There are still regrets left like ‘I should’ve worked a bit harder…’, but that’s why I really want to do well in this the year 2014. Anyway, I’m really thankful because in 2013 many people supported me.
Q: Through [Show Me The Money] you left a good performance very loyal to ‘hip hop’s taste’. In Hip Hop Playa people left lots of enthusiastic feedback for performances like ‘No Mercy+Buffalo 2012’, did anything change after [Show Me The Money]?
A: I lived in Hongdae for 7 years, so when I went out during the day many people recognized me, about 10 persons. However, after the second, third episode of [Show Me The Money] came out, I was in front of the column in the three-way intersection, I stood there about 20 seconds and about 50 persons gathered around. (Laughs) The difference from when people recognized me before was really no joke. Now it’s totally different from before.
Q: We can’t not talk about “Control”. It’s a game that started by Kendrick Lamar, but in our country something slightly different from the U.S diss tracks happened. When you got disconnected from the starting position, how did you observe the situation?
A: As expected, I saw more people doing it wrong than doing it well, but when I got disconnected from the starting position, I think I should’ve been a little more intense. At some point, I think I should’ve done that with the mixing too, and I should’ve said the real names of the people I was referring to too, but because I didn’t do that in the second or third feedback the kids started to come hit me. Well, after that it was a lot more fun. But when quibbling over it, I think I should’ve done it a bit more stronger. Looking back.
Q: Due to the ‘Control’ incident, do you think in the eye of people outside the hip hop scene who were taking a look at hip hop something changed?
A: Seeing all sides to it, I can’t understand [how people can] judge just like that. What I mean is, for example, you fight in the street. I can understand that [people can] frown by seeing that. But having looked over the situation from beginning to end, I can’t agree to people judging [hip hop] generalizing it. I think we did the role of an entertainer. We all just played with it. Of course, naturally it might be an unfamiliar culture to the popular public. However, if something like this happens again, I think people will be able to accept it a little more. For example, when the movie [Yellow Hair] came out in our country it was very controversial, but after that, people didn’t even blink once [watching the movie]. I think it’s a similar phenomenon.
Q: After the release of ‘Bulldozer’, its far-reaching power was so amazing that even cover songs came out. Please tell us any background [story] or episode that happened when Bulldozer was released.
A: After the incident of Control, I was preparing an album dedicated to females called [For The Lady]. But at that time I thought it wasn’t the right timing, so at the end I turned it down. I didn’t want it to be seen as noise marketing, so I said let’s do what I’ve always been doing but more entertaining, stronger, and what came out of it was ‘Bulldozer’.
Q: People are looking forward to Swings and [Just Music] in 2014. Can you tell us briefly what are your plans for the future?
A: [BrandNew] is a large company and has capital, so I’m planning on releasing stuff I can’t do alone through [BrandNew] as much as possible, stuff like music videos. And in [Just Music], through investing the money I’ve earned, I want to assume the responsibility of my family members that are waiting for me. I want to show you this year.

Q: You’ve been selected as “R&B Artist of The Year” in Hip Hop Playa Awards 2013. Please say some words about your impression.
A: It’s been 10 years counting this one since my obsession with music started, but I’m really happy because finally through my work many more people is able to listen to my music. To me, last year was like a miracle, and that was only a stepping-stone. I will continue to live up to the expectations of my listeners making great music. Thank you.
Q: You did a variety of activities during 2013. Is there any moment you particularly remember?
A: My reply is a bit far from being about my activities, though. On the day ‘Attraction’ was released, when it immediately after only one hour entered the charts in #1, that’s really a day and a feeling that I won’t be able to forget for a long time.
Q: You’ve released a lot of hit singles, is there any song you’re specially attached to?
A: Most of the songs I’ve released are featurings, and it took me a long time to do solo activities. Up until now when I’m able to exist, in that time all of them were songs that made me able to work steadily so I think that to pick one song in particular is a bit difficult. (Honestly, for me each of those songs are like my own child.) Even so, if I really have to pick, it’d probably be my first solo song ‘Bad Girl’ because of the time and effort put into making it.
Q: Not long ago it was revealed that you plan on debuting as a member of the hip hop group Troy, please briefly tell us what kind of music genre and what kind of team it is.
A: When you look at Troy, it might seem to you like an extension of Bumkey, but it’s a team that can do stuff that I could never do alone. So I think that we will do many cool and fun works that are not the usual.
Q: Please feel free to say a few words about your album plans for 2014 including the activities you’ve planned.
A: First of all is Troy’s debut which is right in front of our noses. I’ll accomplish all of my role as Troy’s leader Bumkey and I’ll also try my best to do my own thing as Bumkey. I’ll work hard to repay everyone the attention and love they’ve been giving me steadily until now by working making many good music. Thank you for always giving lots of love to the lacking me, and I’ll work hard in order to become someone who can give to you as much as you’ve given to me. Please give [BrandNew Music] lots of love. Thank you.
