The 39th Toronto International Film Festival (4-14 Sep 2014) will spotlight Seoul in its 2014 City to City Programme.
Artistic director Cameron BAILEY said in a press release, "Seoul is one of the most exciting cities on the planet, and you can feel that energy in its films." The section will be co-programmed by Bailey and Giovanna FULVI, the festival's East and Southeast Asia programmer. The selection of films will be announced in August.
Fulvi previously programmed the festival's eleven-film Harvest: South Korean Renaissance tribute during her first year at the festival in 2002. It included films by KIM Ki-duk 김기덕 | 金基德, HONG Sang-soo 홍상수 | 洪常秀, LEE Chang-dong 이창동 | 李滄東 and PARK Chan-wook 박찬욱 | 朴贊郁.
In 1987, former Asian programmer David Overby featured eight South Korean films in his wide-ranging Eastern Horizons retrospective of Asian cinema, including three films by IM Kwon-taek 임권택 | 林權澤.
Previous editions of the City to City programme have focused on Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Buenos Aires, Mumbai and Athens.
As a Torontonian and a huge fan of the work TIFF does, I am super excited for this!
