Korea has their own Rachel Dolezal! UR2 contestant Truedy under fire for cultural appropriation

Truedy, a contestant on Mnet's survival show, 'Unpretty Rapstar', has been recently getting attention for apparently being mixed as she mentions about being "the first black people" in Korea through her lyrics: "This is Truedy flow feel ma voice / Check ma soul I’m from Seoul, can you believe it? Seoul City soul / The first black people in Korea / I’ve never been under but I’ve been to the real bottom / I came up here without anyone, all by myself".

A fan called her out on instagram, telling her that if she isn't mixed, she shouldn't act like she is because being black is not a costume:

Hmm, for me her post doesn't say if she's mixed or not, so I'm going to wait for more information.

I'm guessing Insooni isn't going to show up for the season 2 duets for this one...

This shit pisses me off. How do you love black culture, but don't respect black people when you cosplay as one? If she is truly mixed, she wouldn't say she love black culture because its her culture too. Black culture isn't just about hip hop, clothing style, name brands, and hairstyles. There is more to black culture. She is not doing Black-koreans in Korea any favors by doing this. Its hard enough for them to be accepted by the public and entertainment.
MNET better have her make a statement about this.

I know right, she wouldn't say she is cosplaying a black person if she is mixed black that makes no sense. If anything she would say she identifies more with African American culture then Korean, something a long those lines.

her answer seems pretty ambiguous but at this point I'm -pretty sure she is just dodging saying the truth.

why was everyone saying she is mixed then?? Even in her info before the show people was like "oh she is mixed!' which mean she has presented this persona for a LONG time and thats fucking gross.

This is disgusting and it is just AWFUL how she is allowed to act like that but then again why am I surprised about this.....

is she really not mixed? why did she have that line about Hines Wards then when she rapped about her father?
myrrhcat 19th-Sep-2015 10:27 pm (UTC)
holy shit!!
i was hoping for uprs2 to have at least one hot mess but NOT to this degree

I said it from the first time she dropped a "my black people" line: this is Mrs. Jepp Blackman. No on can tell me otherwise. She's toooo suspect for her to be legit.

Also, looking at it now: it's obvious she isn't black because Mnet would have definitely pimped out her blackness~ more. Look at Toy, never really showed her "talent" but got into top10(?) and got her 10 second screen-time every episode.

Eh? What's going on? Is she or isn't she mixed and where is the proof? I don't count vague wordings because they're... well. Vague. Show me some baby pics or give me her parents names.

If true, that's seriously messed up.

doesn't "I just love black culture" mean that she isn't though? it sounds like the excuse koreaboos use

lmao #mess

I wasn't going to drag her hair in to this, but even without the cornrows that is not a real curl pattern. It looks like a bad blowout meets one of those heat-free-braid-out-curls tutorials lol

She is using black skin color and hair as gimmick on this show which is not the first time someone has done this in Korea yet people get mad when others talk about cultural appropriation, this is a whole other level. To top it all off she is using black-korean experience in Korea as a gimmick when mixed black koreans face discrimination that she doesn't, which is really insensitive. I have no respect for people like her. I see wayy to many people defending this which is even more annoying. She was called out and she said she will continue to do this, she is willfully ignorant. I'm annoyed too because I bet no one is going to call her out on this not even the Korean Americans that appear on the show.
