Censorship Board Announces Ruling On Controversial “Our Gap Soon” And “The K2” Scenes

The Korean Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) has announced its decisions regarding certain scenes in the dramas “Our Gap Soon” and “The K2.”

On October 12 at the Yangcheon District in Seoul, the broadcast deliberations subcommittee held their 35th hearing. The said dramas were on their agenda for this day’s meeting.

The scene in question for “Our Gap Soon” shows lead character Shin Gap Soon, portrayed by Kim So Eun, breaking up with her boyfriend Heo Gap Dol, played by Song Jae Rim, when Heo Gap Dol forces the resisting Shin Gap Soon against a wall and kisses her.

A hearing was called on the grounds of the scene’s portrayal of dating violence, thus breaching the Broadcasting Deliberation Regulation Article 27 (Maintenance of Dignity) Clause 5, and Article 30 (Gender Equality) Clause 2. However, the drama has been cleared by the KCSC, which stated, “We don’t think we should take issue with parts like this in dramas” and ruled, “There is no problem.”

For “The K2,” the committee discussed a two-minute scene wherein Ji Chang Wook‘s character, Kim Je Ha, gets into a brawl with bodyguards in a public bathhouse, where they are all naked with their pelvis areas blurred out.

The scene was reviewed on the grounds of being excessive for a family drama broadcasting at 8 p.m., and for violating the Broadcasting Deliberation Regulation Article 27 (Maintenance of dignity) Clause 5. It was decided upon deliberation that “The K2” would receive a “recommendation” from the KCSC not to have those kind of scenes.

soompi, naver

what did people think as they watched these scenes? i don't watch "our gap soon" so i don't know how bad it was

I don't watch neither of these 2 (shitty) dramas.
For OGS, I was aware of the scene against the wall... rape-y kabedon kiss. For the K2, Yoona looking like an abused girl was enough for me...

And that scene in K2, is a copy-paste of the movie "Eastern Promises" when Viggo Mortensen's character fights naked in a bathroom.

Eastern Promises is such a good movie.
Nikita also had a great naked sauna-fight scene.

"recommendation" sounds like the weakest slap on the wrist to me. not that i have a problem with that scene per se, but the KCSC seems so damn useless if they can't at least take care of drama bits that normalize dating violence/domestic abuse.

“We don’t think we should take issue with parts like this in dramas”

of fucking course. the board is a complete joke, it's composed of old sexist dumbass men who has no understanding of what discrimination is. i'm pretty sure this is also the same board that ruled that there was no problem with sports anchors saying sexist shit about female athletes during the olympics this summer - they were basically like the anchors were just complimenting their beauty! fucking asses.
whiskeyrebels 14th-Oct-2016 04:47 am (UTC)
I don't know if it's true but apparently one of the anchors said that one of the female athletes should work on a "healthier look" because she was flat-chested smh what kind of garbage. And it's only being interpreted as infusing ~dark humour to the matter.

i don't remember that one, but i remember one of them was commentating women's beach volleyball and was like yep you just gotta go to beaches with women, can't go with men etc. and one guy described an athlete's skin as soft and tender, literally how you would describe meat. there was also something about women's golf medalist (her name escapes me) and kim sung joo (who has a long track record of casual misogyny) was basically wondering if she would show aegyo to her husband. fucking gross.

Lol @ the naked shower fight. But how they got there was pretty contrived. It involved so many guys though it was kinda hilarious.

wait so instead of just using artsy camera angles or steam to conceal all that junk they opted for the corny blur tool [???]

Seriously, I don't get it. There's even a regulation against it but add a pink filter and romantic music and it's suddenly okay.
I dropped Uncontrollably Fond precisely because I absolutely HATED how he treated her regardless of context.

It's not exactly related but I hope we soon go back to having more independent leading ladies in dramas.

so naked fighting gets more shit than assault lol bye
letskilljoy 14th-Oct-2016 02:43 am (UTC)
I was so so angry that i dropped OGS halfway through the first ep because i couldn't stand the way gap soon was treated. i was looking forward to see soeun and jaerim but this was just awful.
synatri 14th-Oct-2016 02:50 am (UTC)
lol so sexual assault is nbd while censored peen is questionable and literally no one is surprised.
sayuridoll 14th-Oct-2016 03:02 am (UTC)
disappointed, but not suprised
broadcities 14th-Oct-2016 05:59 am (UTC)
oh sexual intimidation is no big deal, but a blurred out penis is? no.
dull_and_wicked 14th-Oct-2016 07:19 am (UTC)
eastern promises???? lol

also not surprised at all about dating violence getting an okay but blurred male nudity not getting one smh

i mean... when wrist grabbing and pushing against the wall is so normalized as #1 romantic action in kdramas - ofc they wouldn't have an issue with such scene. what's worse is that i saw viewers talking about how hot it is. meanwhile seeing a couple of caps was more than enough for me to me horrified.
as for k2.. lol, i guess? when i was watching that scene it felt more like equivalent of your usual shower scene in any kdrama because you don't see anything (caps in this post give a different impression). it was funny as hell tho. but what i DID wonder about were tattoos. i expected k2 to get warning for that. even cable dramas blur out tattoos and weapons so why this aspect was never mentioned by censorship board is kinda odd.

trust me no one thought that ogs scene was hot, it was the netizens who reported it to the committee in the first place. the viewers are getting better about identifying what's romantic and what's domestic violence (there was a long ize article about how viewers aren't captivated by domestic violence masked as romance anymore, a lot of examples sadly from uncontrollably fond... :/) but the writers are all super old people who haven't changed :/ the writer for ogs is known for her especially fucked up family values and romantic gestures and the viewers have criticized it for years but her plots are outrageous and appealing enough that women in the 40-60s who always have the tv on in those hours give her the ratings.
goldenrosalie 14th-Oct-2016 04:20 pm (UTC)
i wasn't talking about korean viewers. you can check drama posts or youtube videos and see all of the praise for "real kiss in kdrama! finally! such passion!".
your comment gives better insight tho and it's great to know that less & less people accept such things as romantic gestures. but the fact that this is writer's "style".... jfc i will stay far away from any of her projects.

I saw the scene from our Gap soon after reading the article and I'm so disturbed?? Like I felt so uncomfortable watching that definitely felt like he was abusing her like how is this okay ...

I've seen a lot of wrist grabbing pushing against the wall scenes but this is definitely by far the worst? Like the girl looked really scared/upset about it...
