N Korea seeks $75 trillion in compensation

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Cash-strapped North Korea has demanded the United States pay almost $US65 trillion ($75 trillion) in compensation for six decades of hostility.

The official North Korean news agency, KCNA, says the cost of the damage done by the US since the peninsula was divided in 1945 is estimated at $US64.96 trillion.

The compensation call comes on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the start of the 1950-1953 Korean War.

KCNA said the figure includes $US26.1 trillion arising from US "atrocities" which left more than 5 million North Koreans dead, wounded, kidnapped or missing.

The agency also claims 60 years of US sanctions have caused a loss of $US13.7 trillion by 2005, while property losses were estimated at $US16.7 trillion.

The agency said North Koreans have "the justifiable right" to receive the compensation for their blood.

It said the committee's calculation did not include the damage North Korea had suffered from sanctions after its first nuclear test in 2006.

I think this whole thing is a pretty idols-are-humans-and-make-rash-judgments situation. I'd be upset if a problem I had addressed, which caused the performance to be less than great, was ignored... especially if such re-tape requests are normally granted. I don't think it was bad of her to speak about it during her speech. I do think it was a bit douchey, however, to act completely disengaged and visibly pissed during the Oh! perf when the rest of the members were giving it their all. But like I said... idols are people, too. She's allowed to get frustrated every once in awhile.

Korean war 60 years on: Haven in South for young defectors from North

A government-funded school near Seoul prepares youths who have fled poverty and repression for a new life without family.

Perched nervously on the edge of a chair in the principal's office, a hole visible in one knee of his uniform, Kim Yong-hee visibly relaxes when he talks about his recently discovered talent for table tennis and love of martial arts films.

An interest in sport and movies, however, is perhaps all he has in common with other teenage boys in South Korea.

He is 17, but looks 12 – a physical toll exacted by years of under-nourishment and hardship that two years ago prompted his escape, alone and under cover of darkness, from the country of his birth: North Korea.

Kim and the 200 other pupils at Hangyeore middle and high school, an imposing $7.4m building in lush forests 80 kilometres south of Seoul, personify the cold war chasm that has consigned the two Koreas to a bitter estrangement that shows no sign of ending.

Road No. 1 premiere numbers lower than expected

Road No. 1 premiered this week, and despite all the fanfare over its cast and 13 billion won budget, the first two episodes brought in a 9.2% and 9.1%, respectively. Not horrible numbers, but lower than hoped, certainly. Especially considering that competitor drama Baker King Kim Tak-gu on KBS climbed even higher with a 27.1% and 31.1%.

SBS, meanwhile, postponed Bad Guy once again to air World Cup games, and the highlights program and the Slovakia-Italy game recorded respective numbers of 7.3% and 11.4%.

Normally I wouldn’t say that Road’s numbers are such a bad thing for an epic drama, as those sprawling blockbuster series usually take a little time to build and tend to increase later on. (See: East of Eden, Giant.) However, note that Road No. 1 is a 16-episode miniseries, and as it has already completed 100% of its filming, the possibility of an extension is not on the table.

This is also interesting because next week Bad Guy will resume, and before its repeated pre-emptions, it was pulling in 13%-15% numbers. It remains to be seen how much it will cut into the other two competitors — or if its constant delays will have taken the zip out of people’s interest. Some disgruntled and vocal viewers have complained that SBS is making it particularly difficult to watch Bad Guy, so the broadcaster responded by scheduling a “special broadcast” of Bad Guy this weekend. On the 27th, they will air a two-hour program that reviews the plot of the first five episodes, in time for Episode 6 to resume on June 30.

10Asia Interviews Kwon Sang Woo

Bigger picture of this GQ douchebag

Kwon Sang-woo is back to wearing a school uniform. He who placed films "My Tutor Friend" and "The Spirit of Jeet Kun Do" atop the local box office with roles as a high school student, is back as a student soldier full of rebelliousness in "71 Into the Fire" about the Korean War. Now a father of a son, a school uniform might have not been the right character for him to play. But in "Fire," based on the true story of 71 student soldiers who fought against one of the most elite troops of the North Korean army, Kwon's eyes and expressions are the very eyes and expressions of a student soldier full of vehemence. The wailing directed to the oppressive system of Korean high schools that his character Hyun-soo let out in "Jeet Kun Do," has taken on an intensity that goes between life and death to save his country and his colleagues. 10Asia sat down to speak with Kwon who says the sacrifices the student soldiers made was "noble and heartbreaking."

10: How did you feel after the first press screening for the movie?
Kwon Sang-woo: It's honestly up to the heavens to decide whether something will make it big or not. But I have faith that it won't turn a blind eye on us. (laugh) I like the emotions that films contain. The death of the student soldiers will touch your heart as you go towards the end.

10: Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P) seemed to cry a lot while watching the movie.
Kwon: Yes, he cried quite a lot. (laugh) But I understand how he feels because "71 Into the Fire" is his first film. I think I knew nothing either when I was his age. How the tears flowed after I shot my last action scene in "Spirit of Jeet Kun Do." I think that might be what he felt.

Lee Jun-ki to star in military musical

Korean actor Lee Jun-ki, who is currently serving in the military, has been cast in an upcoming musical production tentatively titled "Voyage of Life," according to a press release by the show's PR manager on Thursday.

co-produced by the Ministry of National Defense and Korea Musical Theatre Association, is a special production commemorating the Korean War.

Cast members include current military officers and several Korean actors serving in the army including Lee, Joo Ji-hoon and Kim Da-hyun.

The story was inspired by two real-life incidents that occurred during the Korean War -- the Jangjin battle, considered one of the most horrific defeats during the War, and Heungnam Evacuation Operation, where 14,000 refugees were rescued by a cargo ship.

"Life" will be helmed by noted musical director Kwon Ho-sung with legendary musical producer Yun Ho-jin as chief executive director.

Lee Jun-ki, who shot to fame after starring in the 2005 hit film "The King and the Clown," entered the military on May 3 after he was notified by the government to report to the military.

At the time, he tried to defer his entrance date in order to finish up shooting for film "Grand Prix" and upcoming blockbuster TV series "Faith," but eventually pulled out from both projects when he was unable to do so.

He has been serving his mandatory two-year military duties at Korea's Defense Media Agency.

"Life" will run at the National Theater of Korea from August 21 to August 29.

LOL I guess for Junki life continues as usual in the army (except that he's not making any money out of it). I wonder what's next on the table for him, a military movie or drama?

The interview with MBLAQ properly mixed entertainment and music in one place. Around the time when MBLAQ ranked 1st place, Leader Seungho thought about his grandfather who passed away, and while being close to tears, he awakened a touching heart. However, when Mir, who cried even more than Seungho, started to tell his own story, G.O. said, “When Mir started crying, he lost his original intention.” After that, “His intentions and tears flew together” (Lee Joon) and “Even before we were ranked 1st place, he was grasping onto his emotions” (Thunder) were the comments that were poured out by the members to make fun of Mir. After that, Mir’s ‘original intention’ was on everyone’s lips and they made the interview pleasant. Like their words “We found out that the nuclear weapon of entertainment was all about timing,” no matter what they were talking about together, they made it entertaining.
