PSY joins YG Entertainment

It has just been announced that singer PSY is now a part of YG Entertainment!

YG’s CEO Yang Hyun Suk, had an interview with Star News, stating, “A few days ago, I decided to work with PSY. We actually talked about this a few years ago, before he went to the military, but the contract was finally signed. I was actually one of his councilors for his military issues.”

He then stated PSY’s reason for joining YG Entertainment. “PSY is hardworking but it is hard for him to manage a company due to his young age. He was worried a lot about managing his own company, so I talked about this issue with him frequently. He is multi-talented, as he writes his own songs and does many CF’s. His concerts do great as well. There is not much that I can do to help him, as he is doing great already. I will support him through his future growth.”

His album is also set to release on October, and is now very anticipated due to his new label.

He then revealed his future plans to continue as a singer, stating, “It’s not for sure yet but I am in training for an upcoming album. I do not know if it will be a solo album or a group, but by the looks of it, there will be a higher chance of being it a solo.”

Netizens outraged after Chinese press attacks Wonder Girls looks

On Shenzhen News Web, an article was dedicated on criticizing the five members of Wonder Girls… strictly and solely on their looks. The article included over 20 images of the photos of Wonder Girls extracted from their featured episode on last week’s Happy Camp, and insulted the girls heavily on how unattractive their looks were based on these set of photos.

“Wonder Girls in the promotional pictures and Wonder Girls in real life are very different. What happened to the beautiful legs and charming body?

Ye Eun’s hairstyle makes her look like a high-class madam from the 1930s. Sohee’s expressions are always so stiff. Is it because she’s got too much botox in her face?”

Note that these have been strictly translated from an excerpt of the original article, and no exaggerations have been made in the process.

Furious, Korean and Chinese netizens alike have commented, “Why is China doing this?” “This is undoubtedly a defamation,” “It is very rude to give criticisms on someone’s looks,” etc.

“When I look at Victoria, I become more and more captivated. Often there are times when I wish that the imaginary marriage won’t come to an end,” said Nichkhun in an interview.

Through this week’s episode of MBC Section TV Entertainment, 2PM’s Nichkhun expressed his affection towards his on-screen wife, f(x)’s Victoria. As those words escaped his mouth, he surprised many of the viewers with his honest confession.

Thereafter, Nichkhun selected his ideal woman through a brief game of Ideal World Cup.

The winner of the final round was SNSD’s YoonA, but prior to playing the game, Nichkhun expected Victoria to be listed as one of the female candidates. The sneaky Ideal World Cup game didn’t include Victoria however, further making Nichkhun really surprised. But when he was asked if he wants YoonA to be his imaginary wife, Nichkhun shortly replied, “No comment.”

Meanwhile, this episode also revealed the set of Nichkhun’s advertisement filming.

Lone Rangers Coming Down to Singapore~

Three former members of Korean boybands have struck out on their own and are doing fine

There is life after boybands. And you do not need to ask the likes of Take That's Robbie Williams (who nevertheless has returned to the fold after soaring as a solo act). Just ask the former members of Korea's popular boybands.

In fact, Life! did just that. It turns out that going solo has been a success for several boys-turned-men-alone on stage.

They have gone on to expand their fanbase by garnering thousands of followers all over Asia, for example.

Take Chinese singer Han Geng. He left 13-member boyband Super Junior last year after filing a lawsuit against management SM Entertainment, saying the 13-year contract worked him too hard.

Despite this, the 26-year-old's popularity did not wane. He has launched a new album, Geng Xin, and is heading to Singapore for a showcase at the Esplanade Concert Hall on Oct 3. It is part of an Asian tour.

The same goes for Korean-American singer/rapper Jay Park, who used to be the leader of sexy male dance group 2PM.

The 23-year-old left the boyband when some negative comments about South Korea that he made years earlier on a social networking website surfaced on the net. The comments sparked outrage among fans in the country.

He was supposed to return to the boyband early this year but his contract was abruptly terminated by his management JYP Entertainment for undisclosed reasons.

That did not deter the young pop idol, who is staging a meet-the-fans tour in Asia including Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. He will be in town at Wave House, Sentosa, on Sept 25.

Most recently, heart-throb Kim Hyung Jun, 23, left popular boyband SS501 after his contract with his agency ended in June this year.

The hardworking good-looker immediately plunged into a solo career. He will be in Singapore on Sunday for a showcase at Republic Polytechnic, as well as a meet-and-greet session at IMM Level 3.

Life! finds out how it has been for them after they stopped being one of the boys.

men of cyrano

Rawr! The two main men of the romantic-comedy film Cyrano; Dating Agency — that would be Daniel Choi and Uhm Tae-woong — pose together for this black-and-white spread in Vogue.

It’s not too far off from the recent Elle shoot starring the movie’s cast, which took a ’40s noir vibe as its concept, but this one focuses on the men. And that’s something I’m very okay with. Eyeshadow notwithstanding.

This shoot sets up Uhm as the rebel and Choi as the gentleman. I have no idea how that translates to the “James Dean vs. Jude Law” concept put forth by the magazine, but whatever. (Actually, it’s explained that those two represent the archetypal Hollywood rebel and gentleman, respectively, to which I half-agree and half-snort-while-rolling-my-eyes.)

It sounds like the cast got pretty friendly while shooting the movie. Uhm said of his Cyrano co-star, “I like Daniel Choi’s face. Sometimes it can look ugly, but it’s cute and handsome.” Choi said, “Uhm Tae-woong has a mischievous outer appearance sort of like Matthew McConaughey, but on the inside he’s a very thoughtful person.”

Cyrano; Dating Agency opens on September 16. It tells the story of a timid man (Choi) who can’t confess his love for his crush (Lee Min-jung) and enlists the aid of a dating agency run by Uhm. Complications ensue.

Sexy Moves Provoke debate over teen idols

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

When Hyun A, a member of the idol group 4minute, appeared on the TV program “Quiz to Change the World” - a nationally televised program that promotes itself as suitable for family audiences - it prompted a flurry of angry comments on the station’s Web site from netizens who complained that her sultry “pelvic dance” was too provocative for a 19-year-old.

In video from the show, the camera zooms in on Hyun A’s bare thighs as she shakes her pelvis, and then it moves on to capture some male guests and hosts in their 30s and 40s who are cheering her on.

“It is true that some find the dance provocative and inappropriate, yet all she was doing was showing what the lyrics say,” said a manager of the group who wished to remain anonymous. “Our company does not see her moves as sexy or inappropriate.”

But not all agree.

The increase in the number of young teenage singers, as well as the overall decrease in their age, has some questioning the use of suggestive themes, provocative lyrics and flashy dance moves to promote teen stars to a public that prefers sexy costumes and dances.

Early idol groups such as g.o.d,, COOL and Shinhwa had an average age of 22, 21 and 19, respectively, when they were introduced in the 1990s. But the average age of today’s singers has decreased to as young as 15 or 16 years, and each of the nation’s up-and-coming idol groups has at least one teenage member in its ranks.

“Because the demand for teen singers is increasing, and because teen groups have been found to be more profitable, entertainment companies are working harder to catch up with demand,” said Kim Eun-a, head of public relations at SM Entertainment, a major entertainment company that represents groups such as BoA, TVXQ, Kangta, Girls’ Generation and SHINee.

Most recently, the debut of the girl group GP Basic raised eyebrows because the average age of the group is 15. The youngest member is a sixth-year elementary school student.

A recent survey explains why young entertainers often employ songs, clothes, choreography and videos that are sexually provocative.

The survey of 103 entertainers aged 9 to 24, conducted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, found that 60 percent of female respondents, who are younger than 19, said they were forced by their agencies to expose their bodies against their will to create sexy images.

But despite the increasing number of young entertainers, the nation’s governing body for broadcasting has no specific rules on teenagers working in the industry.

“The mere enforcement of certain laws has a limited effect, and rights such as the freedom of expression become an obstacle to these laws and even to the introduction of new laws,” said Lee Jae-jin, a journalism and mass media professor at Hanyang University. “Rather than restricting such activities, it would be better to change what the public expects of idol singers and react for their safety by implementing minimum regulations and giving them the freedom to do what’s right for themselves.”
