SM turns SHINee and SNSD into bubbleboys/girls, cuts off all contact with world

After news of SHINee’s Jonghyun dating actress Shin Se Kyung were confirmed and received explosive reactions, SM Entertainment has begun blocking all outside contact with SHINee.

SHINee will be making an appearance on KBS 2TV’s “Music Bank” on October 29th, the first public appearance for Jonghyun after his relationship was disclosed to the public. SM Entertainment acknowledged the amount of attention being put on the group and prepared cautious measures to shield the members by having vans wait outside the studio exit in order to quickly move the group as soon as their rehearsal was completed.

Unlike other waiting rooms, busy and full with artists and staff members alike, the waiting rooms for SHINee and SNSD remained empty. Despite this being SNSD’s comeback stage, SM Entertainment has barred reporters and fans from reaching both groups.

A representative of SM Entertainment stated, “Jonghyun’s relationship has been completely exposed. We are being careful so that the story does not attract more attention.”

Kinda saw this coming, but there was this thing I saw on tumblr yesterday where it said this will only be the first of a series of drastic moves SM is making - let me go dig that gossip up.

JYJ US Concerts a Go or No?

‘s US fans were ecstatic when four US concert stops were added to their concert schedule, but as the concert dates grew closer and no information regarding ticket sales were released that joy lead to distress.  Finally, some good news has been released.  Ticketmaster via their Twitter released information that the Hawaii show to be held at the Neal Blaisdell Center on November 10th is a go and that tickets will go on sale on Monday, November 1st at 9:00 am, the event information page will be posted tomorrow.

Promoters are sure cutting it close selling tickets just 9 days before the concert.  Fans are worrying that due to the last minute ticket sales, attendance will be low and would unjustly discourage future concerts by the trio and other Kpop acts.  The Hawaii date was added (in place of the San Francisco date) to appease Japanese fans because Japan was not part of the tour schedule.  Nine days would seem to be too little time for Japan fans to make arrangements, but you never can tell what fans are able to do.

Other dates for the US concerts are November 12th in New York, November 14th in Las Vegas, and November 19th in Los Angeles, but no further information about these concerts have been confirmed yet.  The confirmation of the Hawaii date does give US fans hope though, guess that fans all need to “always keep the faith…”

SuperstarK 2 contestant Kang Sung-yoon

SuperstarK contestant Kang Sung-yoon’s “Instinctively” featuring Swings secured the top spot on Gaon's weekly singles chart during the week of October 16 to 23.

Kang Sung-yoon finished fourth on Superstar K, a music reality show in Korea which is the equivalent to the American Idol in the United States.

Pushed down to second place was last week’s winner “Irreversible” by Ga-in from Brown Eyed Girls who has newly begun her solo career.

Supreme Team's “Then Then Then” also went down a notch to land at No.3 but has remained in the top three of Gaon's weekly chart for the third consecutive week.

Meanwhile, three-member boy band JYJ swept this week’s Gaon album chart with their worldwide release “The Beginning” which debuted at No. 1 and followed immediately by the luxury package version of their album.

Koreas exchange gunfire at land border

(Reuters) - North and South Korea exchanged gunfire across their heavily armed land border on Friday, the South's military said, despite an apparent thaw in tensions on the divided peninsula in the past few months.

The rare exchange of fire took place a fortnight before the leaders of the world's 20 top economies meet for a G20 summit in the South Korean capital Seoul, about 100 km (60 miles) south of the demilitarized zone.

The South's defense ministry said in a statement none of its troops were hurt, and there had been "no more unusual activity by the North." A South Korean military official said the army had put on heightened alert.

I'm going to (not seriously) guess it's a bit like siblings stuck in the back of a car poking each other out of annoyance and boredom; someone was bored or butthurt. I love how nonchalant the SK authorities sound, though. "Oh, yeah, you know. Happens sometimes."

EDIT: just to add the appropriate tag; early-morning tag fail; many sorries, mods!

T-ara to debut in Japan

With the recent news of various Korean groups expanding into the Japanese market, you can add another to the list as T-ara is now planning to debut in Japan.

Earlier today Core Contents Media stated in a press release that they’re currently working a contract with a yet unnamed major entertainment label to expand T-ara into the Japanese market. Core Contents Media plans to make an official announcement once the contract is sealed and the girls are close to wrapping up their second album.

With both KARA and SNSD enjoying much success in Japan, it’s a good time for Korean girl groups to expand into Japan.

Sorry mods! My mac freaked out and spontaneously submitted something while I was trying to adjust the picture :/

I skimmed the actual Asiae article and it basically says 1.) lots of Korean groups are having good luck in Japan, 2.) T-ara's really busy w/ individual activities so they can't take advantage of the boom right now, 3.) they're in talks with a Japanese label, 4.) T-ara's well received in Japan, and 5.) they'll start making moves after promotion for their second album (or mini-album, I think).

2AM remains adorable during their comeback.

For 2AM, the best way to celebrate their comeback was an unexpected buffet from their fans.

On the 28th at 12:05, Jokwon tweeted a picture of the members happily munching on fan-sent food in a buffet style after the filming of MCountdown, saying "it was 2AM's first stage today and we got this buffet from the fans!!! Thank you!!! >_<"

With their cheery expressions and their thumbs up while choosing their food, fans can see the charms of each member.

Meanwhile, 2AM is keeping busy with their first studio album, "Saint O'Clock," their multiple commercials, and have been enjoying a lot of popularity from all their activities. Mnet's MCountdown was their first comeback, and the will continue on with their other comeback stages throughout this weekend.

South Korea: North Korea opens fire at border

North Korea fired two rounds toward South Korea at their tense border and South Korean troops immediately fired back, an official said Friday.

The exchange of fire at the heavily armed border highlights the security problems faced by Seoul as it prepares to host the Group of 20 economic summit next month.

North Korean troops fired at a South Korean guard post in the Demilitarized Zone, said an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul.

There were no South Korean injuries and it was unclear whether it was an accident or an intentional provocation, the official said. He asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

[5/5] Calm Ahead for Korean Wave?

In the fifth and final part of our series on the Korean Wave, or hallyu, The Diplomat looks at what the future might hold for the phenomenon.

As I’ve noted, overseas interest in South Korean culture has risen dramatically over the past decade. So much so, in fact, that the phenomenon was given its own name—Korean Wave or Korea fever (known locally as hallyu).

In the past week, I’ve written about this intriguing trend, looking at hallyu’s roots, its popularity in East Asia and other parts of the world and its effects—especially economically—on South Korea.

But was the Korean Wave spontaneous, or has it been manufactured? And how long will it last?

Jung Sun Park, who I consulted with for this series, has suggested that when hallyu first emerged, it was dismissed by many as simply ‘media hype without substance or a cultural fad, destined to fade away soon.’ However, the critics have obviously been proven wrong, with the Korean Wave showing even now ‘remarkable sustaining power’ over a decade later.
