Yoo Ah In 10Asia Interview Part 2

Yoo Ah In | "I don't want live life just to live it; I want to be awake as a person"

Yoo Ah In once appeared on MBC's and recited a poem he had written. He occasionally posts short essays on his mini-hompy, and through his Twitter account, which he started a few months ago, he speaks to the world in his unique voice. The boy who, when he was in high school, said, "I want the light to shine on me, and I want people to see me shining brightly" as he dreamed of becoming a 'celebrity,' became an actual star through KBS's . It was only after he [achieved this level] that he was able to take the time to find his 'true self' and began to mature into an adult. And though he is still acting, for Yoo Ah In, who once said "Work is easier than living as myself," writing is a way for him to not lose himself.

South Korea reports huge rise in defectors from the North

Last three years brings 10,000 refugees from North Korea – as many as in the previous half-century

The South Korean unification minister, Hyun In-taek, with North Korean defectors in a classroom in Seoul.

The number of North Koreans defecting to the South has soared in the past few years, Seoul's unification ministry announced today.

Officials said around 10,000 had arrived since 2007: roughly equivalent to the total for the previous half-century after the 1950-53 Korean war.

The border between the South and North is heavily fortified and almost all defectors travel via China, where they risk repatriation because Beijing regards them as illegal economic migrants. About 2,500 defectors arrived in the South in 2007 and more than 2,900 defected last year.

S. Korea Criticizes DPRK's Reported Move to Build Light-Water Nuclear Reactor

The reported move by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to build a light-water nuclear reactor, if confirmed, runs counter to international expectations, an official in Seoul said.

"If (the DPRK is) moving toward the development of a light- water nuclear reactor, it goes against expectations of six-party nations or the international community," Seoul's foreign ministry spokesman Kim Young-sun told reporters in a press briefing.

Though the DPRK has repeatedly announced it would develop a light-water nuclear reactor using its own nuclear fuel, South Korea has yet to assess how capable the country is in building such a reactor, Kim added.

The DPRK's official news agency KCNA has said in a commentary in March that the country would build a light water reactor with its own nuclear fuel in 2010s in response to "a black propaganda campaign" from its enemies. The news agency saw attempts from the United States, South Korea and Japan to discourage foreign investment in the DPRK by portraying a bleak picture of the DPRK economy.

The remarks comes after Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported Pyongyang is building an experimental light-water reactor at its Yongbyon nuclear facility, citing Siegfried Hecker, a U.S. nuclear expert who recently traveled to the DPRK.

Recent satellite images of the Yongbyon complex also showed what seemed to be new activity there. The DPRK froze the site under the six-party talks, currently stalled due to its unilateral withdrawal in April 2009.

While light-water reactors are usually for civilian purposes, they use enriched uranium as fuel. And highly enriched uranium can be used in producing atomic bombs.

The United States and other countries planned to give Pyongyang two 1,000-megawatt light-water reactors under a 1994 deal aimed at stopping the DPRK's nuclear program, but the plan later fell through as Washington accused Pyongyang for pursuing a uranium enrichment program.

Mass resignations as feud hits South Korea's rights panel

An internal feud at South Korea's state human rights commission intensified Monday after nearly 40 percent of its advisers resigned en masse in protest at alleged partiality by its head.

The panel said 61 members of its advisory committee stepped down and called for the resignation of Hyun Byung-Chul, who took office in July last year.

The National Human Rights Commission, founded in 2001, has important symbolic status in a country with a history of rights abuses under authoritarian army-backed regimes until the mid-1980s.

In a joint statement, the advisers denounced Hyun's alleged refusal to take action on sensitive political issues and claimed he had undermined the panel's independence.

"We have made a difficult decision to let people know about the seriousness of the current situation," Kim Deok-Jin, a Catholic rights group leader, told reporters.

The panel has 11 standing and non-standing commissioners nominated by parliament, the supreme court and the president, along with 160 advisers.

Two standing commissioners and one non-standing commissioner resigned earlier this month after criticising Hyun's leadership.

The panel has been split between liberal and conservative members over an investigation by state prosecutors into TV station MBC, which aired an investigative news programme into US beef, and over a ban on night rallies.

South Korea agreed in 2008 to lift a ban on most US beef imports. MBC's report on the alleged risk of mad cow disease fuelled weeks of mass street protests.

Prosecutors charged four MBC producers and a scriptwriter with defaming government officials by exaggerating the risk of the disease. In January a court rejected the charges.

More info on SNSD's testimonial drama

SM Entertainment’s flagship K-pop band Girls’ Generation have been reportedly considered by the FTC as witnesses in its investigation of “slave contracts” local talent are subjected to by management companies.

The Fair Trade Commission said Monday it was considering questioning the nine-member K-pop band Girls’ Generation regarding unfair artist-management agreements known as “slave contracts” allegedly prevalent in the entertainment industry.

The anti-trust watchdog affirmed that it was considering the group’s testimony regarding the matter that had been brought to national attention by popular boy band TVXQ since 2009 when they became embroiled in a legal tussle with former management, SM Entertainment.

The FTC said it had an interest in questioning the band about clauses in their contract to determine whether claims made by TVXQ held water
, since Girls’ Generation are currently under contract with the same agency.

“It is true that (Girls’ Generation) were mentioned as possible witnesses to testify regarding TVXQ’s charges of alleged unfair contracts administered by SM,” a spokesperson with the FTC said.

“But as of now, there are no concrete plans for our organization to call on (Girls’ Generation) nor do they have intentions of cooperating yet.”

These three groups -- Girls Generation from SM Entertainment, 2PM from JYP Entertainment, and 2NE1 from YG Entertainment -- were rated according to those three factors for their latest comeback songs, in comparison to their previous works.

JYJ's interview with V Magazine

Not to be dramatic here, but mega-Kpop-group JYJ’s first U.S. showcase in NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Friday night was probably one of the craziest things I have ever seen. The concert was slated to start at 8pm, but when I arrived at the New Yorker Hotel at 1pm for my interview with the artists, I was greeted with the sight of approximately four thousand fans jam-packed into lines that stretched for over two blocks at 35th and Eighth. Passing cars slowed to see what the fuss was about, as anxious police and security guards were having a field day trying to shepherd amazed passers-by out of the way. JYJ, a three-member male group from South Korea, are mega stars internationally (as evidenced by the Guiness Book of Records entries in 2008 and 2009 for World’s Largest Official Fan Club), but this month marks their first debut in the United States. Released in Asia last month, their first English language album The Beginning is planned to drop on Amazon and iTunes in the U.S. in the next few weeks. It is a major debut, with Kanye West and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins producing separate tracks on the album, which also features Malif “The Poet Yusef”, and is distributed globally by Warner Music.

Slayeon's height is 7.5 times the size of her face?

A netizen recently uploaded a ‘face-body ratio analysis’ picture on a popular internet community site, and it has since been stirring quite a discussion.

What fascinated them was that even with Seungyeon’s short height of 158cm (5.2 ft), her height is equivalent to 7.5 times her face size, thanks to her small face.

Fans commented, “She’s so pretty now”, “Her face is small, and her body ratio is good too…she must be happy”, “Seungyeon, whose biggest charm comes from her smiling eyes. Her body ratio is surprising.”

Shinhwa reignited – Eric, Shin Hyesung, Kim Dongwan resume activities

Group Shinhwa, who went on a hiatus 3 years ago, is warming up once again.

With Eric’s enlistment, the group put a temporary stop to their activities and started their hiatus. Now, the members are once again resuming their activities bit by bit, and it shows their power and influence as Korea’s longest-running idol group.

Group activities are especially difficult to coordinate because the members are all under different management agencies. However, Kim Dongwan – who will be discharged from military service on 7 Dec – has just signed on to Liveworks Entertainment, which also manages fellow Shinhwa member Shin Hyesung. With “strength in numbers”, it seems that it will be easier for Shinhwa to function as a group.

After signing with Liveworks after his discharge on 7 Dec, Kim Dongwan will kick off his return with a fanmeeting and activities in Japan. There are also plans for him to also embark on other projects such as dramas.

Eric – who completed his military service last month – will also release a digital single with Shin Hyesung, a clear reminder of the existence of Shinhwa. The digital single “Hello and Goodbye” by Shin Hyesung and featuring Eric on rap, will be released on 19 Dec. To the fans, the collaboration between the two is a big event that is undoubtedly a display of the power of Shinhwa.

Eric has also taken up the lead role in the coast guard drama “Poseidon”, taking care to maintain Shinhwa’s reputation as the number one idol group with success in acting and entertainment.

There are still about 2 years to go before the Shinhwa members can reunite as a group. Lee Minwoo, the latest to enlist, has also started his duties as a public service officer in February this year.

A source close to Shinhwa said, “There’s still quite a long time to go before Andy, Junjin and Minwoo resume their showbiz activities. But Eric, Kim Dongwan and Shin Hyesung are resuming their activities first, and while they work hard to stay active within showbiz, people will once again start talking about Shinhwa. As Korea’s longest-running group, there are still many future projects being lined up for them.”

T-ara and Davichi bail out on MAMA

Core Contents Media's top girl groups, Davichi and T-ara have pulled out of the '2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards' (MAMA).

Core Contents Media said today that, "T-ara and Davichi will be unable to attend the MAMA's due to inevitable reasons."

"The reason for not attending is because they have plans with other broadcasters and we do not want to put anything at stake. We have tried to adjust, but it won't work," he said.

T-ara was nominated for best girl group and best dance performance, while Davichi was nominated for the best vocal performance by a group.

Recently, it was revealed other artists would not be attending, which has decreased the participation of local artists in the concert. After T-ara and Davichi pulled out, the expectations have decreased significantly.

Overall, the end of the year awards ceremony seems to be going to be a bit 'shabby' and has not much strength.
