K-pop uncovered: Making Bubblegum Part 1 (also posted on omntdnt)

“I fell through the cracks,” said the attractive brunette sitting across from me with her characteristic bluntness.

I first met Isak (real name: Ida Simmons) when I worked at Arirang TV and Radio, an English-language broadcasting station. The daughter of a Caucasian father and a Korean mother, Isak had previously been the member of an unsuccessful SM Entertainment act called Isak N Jiyeon. However, she managed to eventually parlay her bubbly charms into a successful career as both a DJ and VJ at Arirang Radio.
While Isak, who still has three years left on a ten-year contract, applauded SM founder Lee Soo Man’s ability to think outside of the box and accept a biracial Korean-American into his company, she also remembered the more suffocating aspects of being a K-pop entertainer in the earlier part of the decade. For example, when she lived with several other SM trainees in a dormitory-like setting, the girls’ managers devised a clever way to keep tabs on the talent:

Small pockets of unrest are appearing in North Korea as the repressive regime struggles to feed its people, South Korean media have reported.

The mass-circulation Chosun Ilbo reported that scores of people in Jongju, Yongchon and Sonchon in North Pyongan province last week caused a commotion two days ahead of leader Kim Jong Il's February 16 birthday.

A North Korean source told Chosun Ilbo that the protesters fashioned makeshift megaphones out of newspapers and shouted: "We can't live! Give us electricity! Give us rice!"

Yamashita Tomohisa (a.k.a. Yamapi) revealed through a recent interview that he’d like to work with JYJ’s Jaejoong in the future. ”Jaejoong and I promised to work together someday. I really want to do it if there is any chance,” he said. The two became close while TVXQ was promoting in Japan, even attending a Lady Gaga benefit concert together. Additionally, Yamapi’s sister, Yamashita Rina, and his mother are huge TVXQ fans.

Stars and fans are celebrating SS501’s Kim Kyu Jong birthday.

At 12:30 am on the 24th, fellow SS501 member Park Jung Min tweeted, “생일 축하합니다! 생일 축하합니다! 사랑하는 규종이! 생일 축하합니다!/Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! My dear Kyu Jong! Happy Birthday!” Jungmin also added, “Let’s work hard this year and surprise everyone with success!! I love you!”

At 2 am, member Kim Hyung Joon also wished Kyujong a happy bithday on his twitter: “해피 버스 데이! 규종, 사랑한다. 어여 들어가/ Happy Birthday! Kyu Jong, I love you. Hurry and get home.”

Kyu Jong’s friend, Sim Eunjin joined the celebration as well along with Kim Kyu Jong’s various fan clubs.

Many fan clubs have changed their main layout with banners saying “Kim Kyu Jong’s Birthday” and are also donating blood to celebrate the occasion. Fans are also sending birthday various messages including: “Happy 25th Birthday!,” “Do we have to consider you an elder now?,” and “Dear mother, thank you so much for giving birth to a perfect son.”

Kim Kyu Jong recently held a fan meeting with Heo Young Sang at the Sangmyung University in Seoul. He is currently getting ready to be an actor.

The evening leg of Yumi Katsura Bridal March 23rd runway show held in Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan (the city’s famed Sumo Hall) was not just a parade of beautiful designs but also a veritable CUBE fan gathering as 4MINUTE and BEAST came to partake in the show!

Yumi Katsura is a famous Japanese designer known for her extravagant wedding dress designs (check out the girls of 4MINUTE model cute mini dresses below!) Wednesday’s show featured a mix of both more Western wedding dresses, magnificent traditional Japanese designs, and fusion pieces under the title RENAISSANCE JAPAN.

Past pictures of T-ara girl group memberBoram have been revealed via an online upload site and are causing a quite a commotion amongst netizens.

The picture shows Boram's image before her debut, alongside a mysterious man. The photo in question was taken back in 2005, when Boram was the ripe age of 21. From the depiction of their intimacy and heart signs, it can be deduced that their relationship is fairly close.

Netizens commented "Who is that man..", "Was it her boyfriend pre-debut?" and "There's something weird about Boram's face."

Some fans are frowning upon Super Junior Leeteuk’s harsh joke.

On February 22nd, KBS 2FM ‘Super Junior’s Kiss the Radio’ featured a K-pop in China special. In place of Eunhyuk, SHINee’s Key filled in to join Leeteuk as a host DJ. On this day, Kan Mi Yeon, miss A’s Jia and Fei appeared as special guests.

When the DJ’s asked Jia and Fei, “When will miss A come back,” the girls answered, “We’re still in preparation for that.” Leeteuk responded with, “I guess we’ll know more when KBS 2 drama ‘Dream High‘ ends.” Then he suddenly exclaimed, “Suzy needs to lose weight first.”

After this statement, the entire studio fell into a brief awkward silence, and both Jia and Fei told Leeteuk to “knock if off.” Kan Mi Yeon also disapproved with what Leeteuk said. Leeteuk quickly tried to move on with a smile after saying he was just joking, but his comment angered many listeners.

Listeners expressed anger saying, “That was too harsh for a joke,” “Think about how Suzy would feel when she hears it,” “How could you ever tell a girl to lose weight, that’s so rude!”

Contents Industry Shows Strong Growth with Exports of US$3.8 Billion

Contents exports are expected to increase by 14% this year owing to the “digital Korean wave” and market diversification.

The young “G20 generation” will lead a new culture in contents consumption with SNS. The competitive landscape in the contents industry is expected to change with the government issuing new licenses for multichannel TV program providers, and contents production is expected to get more diversified and large-scaled as companies target the global market.

The Korea Creative Content Agency (CEO Lee Jae-woong) announced the “Seven prospects for the Korean contents industry in 2011” where it predicted exports of killer contents, such as games, TV dramas and music to reach US$3.8 billion this year, a 14% increase over last year. The profitability of “Korean wave” contents has improved greatly with royalties increasing by 100%, thanks to the success of girl groups in the Japanese market, including Girls’ Generation and Kara.

The competitive landscape of the contents industry, which had been largely divided between broadcasters and telecommunications operators until now, is expected to change with multichannel TV program providers entering the picture. It is expected to become a three-way competition among comprehensive media groups (three public TV networks, MSO, telecommunications operators), contents production companies (drama production companies, game developers, music production companies), and multichannel TV program providers (Chosunilbo, JoongAng Daily).

Contents production will become more diversified and grow in scale as companies seek to enter the global market. 3D contents, in particular, are expected to increase rapidly, and more 4D theaters are expected to open. The widespread use of smart pads is expected to spur the growth of the e-book market.

JYJ member Kim Jaejoong participated in the shooting of fashion magazine ELLE Korea March Edition, shooting killer photos with backdrops like LA, New York, Beijing, and Seoul. The charming yet mysterious expression has caused the hearts of many females to flutter.

On the day of the shoot, the first thing Jaejoong said to the staff was, "Everyone here are not aunties, but older sisters," earning the apporval of the female staff and causing the atmoshpere to lighten up.

After so many Korean singers diving in to get their share of the Japanese music market, finally a Japanese singer is doing the same.

Tomohisa Yamashita will be debuting in Korea on March 2nd with her solo album titled "Supergood, Superbad". She's planning on wasting no time before holding her own concert too on April 16-17 at the KBS 88 gymnasium. This will be her first concert in Korea. Following that, she'll debut on Mnet's M! Countdown on March 24th.

Nicknamed YamaPi, she broke away from the group News to go solo in 2006. She's even starred in many drama projects such as "Code Blue", "Kurosaki", "Producing Nobuta", and "Dragon Sakura".

Despite the fact that Yamashita has never been officially introduced to the Korean public, she's pretty well known already. Especially after she was linked with SS501 Kim Hyun-joong for looking like the female version of him. Also, when she came to Korea for a personal trip in 2008, within no time, hundreds of fans had gathered in Gimpo Airport to catch a glimpse of her.

Secret performed ‘Shy Boy’ on the February 25th episode of KBS 2TV ‘Music Bank’, at KBS Public Hall in Yeouido, Seoul.

Infinite, who appeared wearing black tuxedos, not only showed their scorpion dance, but created a fresh and cheerful stage by group dancing with Secret. To Infinite’s surprise appearance, fans showed various reactions like, “They match well together,” “They’re really pretty”.

Secret, who met with the reporters after finishing their prerecorded performance, commented, “It passed by without us even noticing it”, and “Although we wanted to do the scorpion dance with Infinite, we didn’t get to.” Zinger, who yelled “Infinite” during her rap part, started talking more and added, “After screaming, my voice became odd.”

Meanwhile, today’s ‘Music Bank’ showed, DBSK’s ‘Maximum’, MBLAQ’s ‘Again’, Infinite’s ‘BTD’ (Dance Break Mix) and Kim Hyunjung had her comeback. Infinite and Secret became harmonized and created a joint stage for ‘Shy Boy’.

Also, Ye Ara had her debut and other performers were DOZ, J-Cera, Park Haekyung (Feat. SanE), 5Dolls, Jewelry, Dalmatian, Kim Bokyung, Lee Hyun, Kan Miyeon, Lee Jung, Navi, Gahee, IU, Mighty Mouth (Feat. Soya), and G.NA.

When new employee Choi declined a shot of soju during a company night out, she had no idea of the ramifications the decision would invite.

“My immediate boss commented snidely that I would someday regret refusing the alcohol,” said the 24-year-old, who got a job at a local finance company a year ago. She asked that her full name not be disclosed.

“What really got to me though was that all my co-workers at that restaurant sat there in dead silence, like mindless robots,” she said.

Choi ended up drinking the shot of soju and got a small allergic rash the next day. Even after her compromise, however, her boss often makes fun of her about being “high maintenance.” She said that she still couldn’t shake the feeling that refusing the soju has hurt her career at the company.

I would like to know why "Medical Today" isnt writing about something...well medical. can someone explain to me?

During Dalmatian’s most recent live performance of “That Man Opposed” on Music Bank, leader Inati accidentally threw a right hook that hit Drama (Daniel) in the mouth.

This was during a part of the choreography that required Inati to turn and pretend to playfully punch Drama. However, Inati hit Drama for real in the mouth, but like a true professional, Drama continued to sing for the rest of the performance perfectly, despite the fact that he was bleeding.

Agency representatives have reassured fans by saying, “This was an accident on Inati’s part and Drama was hurt but it was not a serious injury“.
