Winner remains at No.1 for 2 weeks

Rookie K-pop band Winner has stayed at the top of the local music charts for two weeks straight with its debut track as of Tuesday, outshining established idol stars such as Sistar, HyunA, Block B and Girls Day.

The quintet’s title track “Empty” from its debut EP “2014 S/S” held the No.1 spot for the second consecutive week on three major music charts -- Melon, Genie and Bugs Music -- as of Aug. 26, two weeks after its release on Aug. 12.

Their album also topped the Billboard World Albums chart and ranked No. 6 on its Heatseekers Albums chart on Aug. 22, showing that the group is gaining global attention.

The rookie group also came in first on three TV music shows -- Mnet’s “M Countdown,” KBS-2TV’s “Music Bank,” and SBS “Inkigayo” -- just a week after their official debut on TV.

The YG’s newest group was first introduced through the survival audition show “Who Is Next: WIN,” YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk’s latest project to pick members for his newest boy band.

During the program, Team A and Team B, all composed of trainees under the label, vied for a chance to debut in the winner-takes-all competition. The victory went to Team A, which is now the group Winner.

South Koreans 'will be extinct by 2750'

South Koreans will be 'extinct' by 2750 if nothing is done to halt the nation's falling fertility rate, according to a study by The National Assembly Research Service in Seoul.

The fertility rate declined to a new low of 1.19 children per woman in 2013, the study showed, well below the fertility rate required to sustain South Korea's current population of 50 million people, the Chosun Ilbo reported.

In a simulation, the NARS study suggests that the population will shrink to 40 million in 2056 and 10 million in 2136. The last South Korean, the report indicates, will die in 2750, making it the first national group in the world to become extinct.

The simulation is a worst-case scenario and does not consider possible changes in immigration policy, for example.

The quintet’s debut EP “2014 S/S” rose to the top of the chart, and ranked No. 6 on its Heatseekers Albums chart the same day, proving the new group has been receiving global attention.

Winner is creating a frenzy at home as well. Shortly after the group dropped its debut EP on Aug. 12, the title track “Empty” swept major Korean music charts.

Winner was first introduced through the reality survival show “Who Is Next: WIN,” YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk’s latest project to pick members for his newest boy band.

During the program, Team A and Team B, all composed of trainees under the label, vied for a chance to debut in the winner-takes-all competition. The victory went to Team A, which is now the group Winner.

The power of a dream CEO Jung Mi Sung strives to create a ‘good company’ with good artists

For producer and CEO of SouLime SounD Jung Mi Sung, also known as Melody, there has always been one dream in her life: music.

The 26-year-old started playing piano and attending music academies at age 5. However, her parents had other plans for the enthusiastic musician, saying they wanted her to live a normal life and pursue a normal path.

Still drawn to music, Jung ended up continuing it behind her parents’ backs in high school. While she was in the U.S. a teacher reminded her that her parents weren’t there to find out. So, she got involved with anything related to music, from choir to musicals to orchestra, and even a cappella.

But after winning high scores at a music competition, Jung knew she needed to convince her parents that music was what she wanted to do.

“They told me, ‘If you can get into a good music school, then maybe I will understand a bit.’ So, I auditioned for Berklee College of Music,” she said. “And then I thought I was not going to get in, because I heard a lot of crazy musicians, they come there and then they audition and they’re all freaking geniuses.”

Jung said if she didn’t get in, then it wasn’t where she was meant to be. Which is why she was shocked when she found out that not only was she accepted, but she was receiving a scholarship.

This did help with bringing her parents around a bit, though her father still wanted her to do business. So Jung settled on a double major in music business and songwriting in order to fully understand the music industry.

“People in the music business industry, they don’t usually understand the musician, because they need to make money for themselves, not them. And then the songwriting majors, they just want to make music. They don’t care about the business,” she said.

Sunny Reveals Which Girls’ Generation Members Use Insoles on “Happy Together”

Girls’ Generation member Sunny made an appearance on the August 28 broadcast of KBS 2TV’s variety program “Happy Together,” for the ‘Tall vs. Short’ special, and revealed that the shortest members of the group sometimes use up to three layers of insoles.

During the show, the topic of insoles was brought up. One of the male guests confessed that he uses about three different insoles at a time, comparing it to women’s heels, and said that his ankle is still fine even if the insoles bend.

After hearing this, Sunny said that she could relate, saying, “There was a time that I was dancing on stage when that happened. During ‘Into the New World’ and ‘Oh!’ we wore sneakers. The tall members don’t need to wear insoles, but they started to use insoles in order to have better proportions.”

She continued, “That’s when we [the shorter members] have to start wearing more and more insoles. Those members are Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Jessica, Tiffany, and me. When the tall members put in insoles, then the average members have to start wearing insoles too, which means I have to put in three layers. There are side effects though. The shoelaces are hard to tie and the sides of my feet are visible,” causing everyone to laugh.

Song Hye Kyo Apologizes Again

Song Hye Kyo has already apologized publicly for her tax evasion scandal, even though technically it is not her fault. Still, when she was interviewed in the Korea Herald recently she felt the need to apologize again. Only this time she apologized for promoting her film, "My Palpitating Life," in light of the scandal.

Was it appropriate for her to make appearances that promoted the film even though she was the subject of so much negative attention?
It was a matter of keeping promises.
