Is KPop as Queer as it Appears to be?

Author’s Note: Before I moved to South Korea, I was a professional LGBT activist in New York City. I am not Korean and I was raised in America. This post is not a comprehensive guide to LGBTQ issues in Korean culture.

Korea is a conservative country, abortion is not legal, comprehensive sexual education is a thing of the future, pornography is censored and the queer community is so invisible that it is often times only found in hidden unmarked bars and jimjilbangs. I went to Seoul Pride this year, which was touted as the biggest LGBTQ affirming celebration in Korea. Let’s just say it left a lot to be desired. People wore masks to cover their face and armbands asking not to be photographed by the media, for fear of being outted. A massive protest was staged and more Christian fundamentalist protesters were present than actual participants in the celebration. Hundreds of protesters laid in the street blocking the floats for the parade and eventually caused the parade to be canceled. An intense police presence was there and because of their violent behavior, took many of the protestors away.

Sexual Minority Students in Korea Try Hard to Make Their Voices Heard

SEOUL, Oct. 23 (Korea Bizwire) –
A transgender victim has filed for a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission of Korea on October 22. Human rights advocacy groups representing the interest of sexual minorities held on the 23rd a press conference in front of the commission’s office and said, “Forcing a transgender military conscript to go through a physical surgery is serious infringement on the rights of a transgender person to make choice and seek happiness.”

According to the groups, the victim went through a medical check-up in 2012 for mandatory military service. At the time, he submitted doctor’s opinion on his sexual identity impairment and documents on a series of hormone therapies for exemption.

But the medical examiners of the Military Manpower Administration rejected his requested and said they would grant exemption if he underwent a surgery. In the end, he was exempted from military service after an orchiectomy, or surgical castration in which testicles are removed.

Jessica Clarifies Wedding Rumors with Tyler Kwon, Reveals No Immediate Plans for Marriage

Former Girls’ Generation member Jessica has finally spoken out about the wedding rumors with alleged boyfriend Tyler Kwon.

According to a Chinese media outlet, Jessica attended the ‘2014 Mission Hills World Celebrity Pro-Am’ golf event, which took place in Haikou, Hainan on October 23.

On this day, it was reported that Jessica took part in an interview with local media, and directly addressed the rumors of marriage that have surfaced in recent months.

Jessica denied having wedding plans, explaining, “It’s not true. I don’t have any immediate plans for marriage at this time. However, just like all other women who dream of marriage, I will also get married someday.”

At the end of last month, Tyler Kwon took to his personal Weibo to deny the marriage rumors surrounding the couple as well.

1. [+1,842, -193] You're being used by Kwon, just like you used Soshi...

2. [+1,250, -115] Don't care if you do or don't~~~

3. [+1,137, -106] Don't care anymore...

4. [+1,045, -171] Leave the entertainment industry for good, don't even think of coming back~

5. [+237, -15] And suddenly them dating becomes a reality ㅋㅋ

6. [+239, -20] Her brand's just too expensive, their marketing's all wrong... Jessica has no name value to maintain a brand price of that kind and the quality isn't up to par either.

7. [+218, -15] I wonder if Jessica would've still created a Weibo if not for her Chinese business. Did she have to upload the Soshi split on her Weibo claiming that the people she loved had a right to know? What about her Korean fans then? You don't love your fans, you love their money.

8. [+199, -14] People keep worrying about Jessica like she's the victim but Jessica's doing just fine with her Chinese business and doesn't care at all about her Korean fans. She's promoting her business on Weibo and everything so don't worry about her ㅋㅋㅋ There were even articles of her and Tyler at the airport together a couple days ago ㅋㅋㅋ

1. [+323, -29] What disappoints me is that she doesn't seem like she cares about her Korean fans at all. She's been busy updating her Weibo in English to promote her business as if that was her intention for leaving;;; With the way she acts, it kind of seems obvious that she's been planning to leave all this time. There's proof of her trying to leave the group since Mr. Mr. promotions.

2. [+220, -28] Why doesn't she ever talk about her asking to leave the group first for her marriage and business plans? And why are there constantly articles about this Chinese designer? Who cares if she gets married or not, she's the one cosplaying as a victim overseas because she's crazed over some gyopo

3. [+188, -27] She attended a golf competition?? With all this noise marketing, she must be going around promoting her brand ㅋㅋ Why is she denying stuff there's proof of like pictures of her staying in America for a month with her boyfriend.

4. [+28, -7] Jessica's basically a foreigner too. People hate on all the EXO Chinese members but they're so forgiving with Jessica... when at the end of the day, the Chinese members and Jessica are both foreigners.

5. [+26, -7] I loved Jessica the most out of SNSD but now I just see her as selfish. The betrayal I feel now is as big as my love for her was. Can't imagine how other fans feel.

2NE1 skipping all year-end music awards

Hallyu idol group 2NE1 decided not to attend any music awards to be held in the year-end, its agency said Friday.

“2NE1 was invited to many ceremonies. But it kindly refused them since the members think it is right to stay inactive at this moment to have some time for self-restraint,” said YG Entertainment.

The group has been inactive since vocal member Park Bom became involved in alleged drug smuggling in July. The agency strongly denied the report, saying Park legally obtained the drug under a doctor’s prescription in the U.S. Korean authorities also did not charge her with a crime nor indict her.

The group will only attend a fashion award called the Style Icon Awards to be held Tuesday.

Regarding the group’s future plans, the agency suggested that 2NE1 will work as a whole next year while rapper CL focuses on the solo debut in the U.S. at the same time.

Meanwhile, the four-member group will take part in the YG Family Concert as planned to keep its promise to fans, the agency added.

The group’s studio album “Crush” topped all the local charts as soon as the album was released in February.

Edit: Apparently only CL will attend SIA and she'll have a collab stage with Diplo Soompi

Minzy’s Older Sister Gong Min Young to release her first album!

MBLAQ revealed to likely remain as a group regardless of their contract expiration

Following the news of Lee Joon and Thunder will not renew their contracts with J.Tune Camp which led to fans' conclusion that MBLAQ might disband soon, some officials in the music industry has revealed that the members might still remain as a group regardless of the expiration of their contracts.

OBS has come out with an exclusive report saying that according to multiple officials in the industry, MBLAQ members might continue staying in the group regardless of the expiration of their contracts including Lee Joon. This means that even a member didn't renew the contract with J.Tune Camp and signs with another agency, he would likely find a way so that he could promote as MBLAQ member.

One official said,"Even if one member decided to not renew his contract with the current agency as the contract expiration is coming near, he's unlikely to leave the group. If he renews his contract, the activities will naturally proceed, but even if the members belong to different agencies, they are likely to continue their individual activities along with MBLAQ activities".

Meanwhile, MBLAQ will launch solo concert 'Curtain Call' at Olympic Park's Olympic Hall in Seoul on November 29th & 30th.
