From streets to cafe, feminism in S. Korea expands boundaries

By Choi Soo-hyang

SEOUL, March 8 (Yonhap) -- At a glance, it seems like any other cafe near a subway station.

But a closer look reveals that one side of its walls is filled with books on feminism and the majority of its guests are women in their 20s and 30s.

On a recent Thursday afternoon, three women in their 20s sat at one of the tables and discussed subtle sexual discrimination in literary works.

One of them, who wanted to be identified only by her last name Lee, came all the way from Chuncheon, 85 kilometers east of Seoul, on a day trip to check out this unique place, which opened last month.

From a feminist cafe to a publisher specializing in women's issues, the boundaries of feminism in South Korea are expanding, with more people declaring themselves to be feminists.

Johnny and Jaehyun to begin DJing new radio show, NCT's Night Night, on March 20

On the 20th, SBS Radio will open a new program with NCT’s members, Jaehyun and Johnny for radio program ‘NCT’s night night!’

'NCT’s night night!’ will follow after Power FM 'a night like tonight’ and will be broadcasted every day for 1 hour at 11 PM KST. Through the idol DJs in their 20s, it’s targeted to attract teenagers and young people in their twenties who have stayed away from the radio.

Johnny and Jaehyun became DJs for SBS Power FM 'love game’ when Park Sohyun was out due to an injury. At that time, “It was their first time and although there were weak points, but they have abilities to naturally communicate and sympathize with people. Although they are not perfect yet, they have a lot of potential as DJs”

When both Jaehyun and Johnny said they “want to be Radio DJs” at the same time, their strong will became the decisive moment for the DJ’s recruitment. The two said “When I went on the radio, stories came to me from a wide variety of people. I liked the fact that there was a variety of people’s stories. (Facing) New challenges such as narration and acting that only show on the radio was fun too. We understand more about others through the program and expect our worlds to expand.” And “ I want to see not only fellow idols but also artists and professionals from various fields through radio.”

“We will be hosts who share the stories of teenagers and people in their 20s, with their peers. We will continue to study music and introduce (you to) a lot of good music. We hope you expect a lot.” They said as the new DJs. The name of the programme (radio show), 'NCT’s Night Nite!’ Is a cute night greeting that means 'good night’.

The newly created SBS Power FM 'NCT’s night night!’ will broadcast every night from 11 PM to midnight starting from on Monday, March 20th. In addition, it’s also expected to broadcast on multiple platforms like the Naver V App and Youtube to find listeners around the world.

Ji Chang Wook Considering Drama with Lee Sung Kyung

Beware This Woman, the new SBS drama that currently has an offer out to Lee Sung-kyung, is courting Ji Chang-wook to be its leading man. Beware This Woman will be a mixed-genre series, combining elements of romantic comedy with thriller and legal drama. The drama is described as a cat-and-mouse, chase-and-be-chased thriller involving an amnesiac killer whose memory loss causes a crucial moment to keep repeating in an endless loop. He/she is out to kill our two leads, who end up relying on each other throughout their ordeal (which also involves “very funny rom-com” elements).

It isn't finalized yet, but I'm so thrilled with the idea of JCW in a romcom, especially in a drama by the writer of I Remember You. I'm totally here for this pairing. All my fingers and toes are crossed they both confirm!

#cancellationisasudden: MIXX's Makestar abruptly closed, comeback plans shelved (?)

Rookie Chinese-Korean girl group MIXX, who added two new members at the beginning of this year, has been slowly gaining fans with their unique sound after coming back with "Love Is A Sudden" and announced both their fandom name (MATCH) and a Makestar campaign to fund their first full-length EP last month. Sadly, the project was shut down without warning today. It had managed to hit 75% of its $4,397.92 goal before closing. It's assumed that Makestar sent this explanation to backers (via the comments on their Makestar page):

"Unfortunately, due to personal situation of Chinese members along with agency's condition, MIXX's mini album project will be put to limitless postponement. Therefore, it would be at best to discontinue the Makestar's Mini Album Project." OP will expose herself by admitting to not donating before they closed it and thus not receiving the update

MIXX's company Chiko Entertainment has not released a public statement through any of their official platforms, so this seems to be the only info available for now. The "personal situation" is unclear considering the group just held their first mini-fanmeeting and the members have been updating regularly through SNS.

Lee Hi x MAC

This spring and summer, beauty purveyor MAC Cosmetics is unleashing the next round of its Future Forward campaign with an international trio of rising singers; Justine Skye, Dua Lipa and Lee Hi.

Closing out the collection on June 29, is K-Pop star Lee Hi, who after taking a three-year hiatus is back on the scene with upcoming music and a deep red matte lipstick ($17;, inspired by the reds she wears every day. "I wanted to make a red lipstick that is on-trend and wearable, and I wanted the color to be provocative, yet very feminine and girly."

For MAC, partnering with a rising crop of fresh, young talent is a mutually beneficial win. "It feels like a great thing to be able to support artists who are breaking through but aren’t necessarily at the top top, to push them forward," MAC Senior VP and Creative Director James Gager previously told Billboard. "We’ve always done that sort of thing with fashion designers, and to me, it’s most interesting to introduce these artists," Gager, who has helped launch MAC collaborations with artists Halsey, Tinashe, Dej Loaf and Jillian Hervey of Lion Babe, said.

[billboard] 5 Years of BIGBANG's 'Fantastic Baby'

by Tamar Herman

Trends come and go pretty quickly in music, particularly in the K-pop industry, but the staying power of some hits can’t be denied. On March 7, 2012, Korean boy band BIGBANG released the music video for their single “Fantastic Baby,” and fans around the world have been saying “Wow, fantastic baby” ever since.

While they were already dominating the local popular music scene, the South Korean act produced one of the few K-pop songs to garner attention internationally with “Fantastic Baby,” in part thanks to the song's dynamic sound and the stimulating visual feast that is the music video. The boisterous, genre-blending sound was something altogether new for the act at the time, while the seditious music video promoted music as a form of rebellion.

After debuting as a group with more old-school R&B and hip-hop leanings, BIGBANG had become known both for sentimental tunes and more upbeat dance tracks, but the swaggering “Fantastic Baby” ushered in new era that poised the group as one of Korea’s most ambitious acts. This was the first BIGBANG song I ever heard, and tbh I didn't like it at first but it ended up growing on me. My fave thing about it is that they managed to perform it at the year end awards shows almost every year since it came out.

Which of their many many many many stage performances has been your fave, Omona?

Upcoming boy group Seven O’Clock is only days away from making their debut!

The six-member group will begin promoting their debut single “ECHO,” the title track on their first mini album “Butterfly Effect,” on March 16.

Seven O’Clock consists of leader A-Day, Vaan, Hyun, Young Hoon, Jung Gyu, and Tae Young.
