minho reveals that shinee has the "upper hand" in contract with sm

The "upper hand" is apparently in reference to distribution share, creative input (the choosing of title tracks, more participation in albums / album concepts, line distribution, etc.), freedom when it comes to individual projects (acting, DJing, MCing, some endorsements, etc.), so on and so forth. The first isn't too surprising as it was mentioned earlier this year that SHINee's current revenue share with SM is 8:2 (It's the same with SNSD while Kangta, BoA, TVXQ!, Super Junior, etc. all have a share of 9:1) - which was ultimately linked to their contract renewal back in 2015. It was after this point that SHINee began to have more direct input in their Korean promotions, and also when the members began to branch out more in individual activities (such as Jonghyun writing his novel, Onew and Key taking on television acting, etc.). Obviously they're not able to make every choice in their career as there are people who work for SM who make certain decisions for them (ie: managers often schedule events, stylists choose what they wear during concerts and events) but beyond that ...

So, tl;dr: SHINee is getting a vast majority of the money that they bring in. The same goes for all other artists who debuted before them in the company. Add on the fact that the share that goes toward SM doesn't all directly go into Lee Soo Man or Kim Young Min's pockets (because there's still people to pay like make up artists, stylists, managers and such) and they're raking in the $$$$. (Which ... double "no surprise there" considering that Jonghyun has a Lamborghini / recently bought his mom a Porsche, Key is renting out a super expensive apartment in a ritzy area, yada yada.)

this was said on a variety show last week but i found it kind of interesting that shinee has benefit in what they make / in general over sm now. i'd kind of been wondering for awhile because they let them (and boa ... and tvxq ... and soshi ... and i guess sometimes suju) get away with a lot so i figure there must have been some big change in their renewal contract back in 2015. not that i blame either shinee for pushing it or lsm for agreeing to it, seeing as how much $$$$ shinee have been bringing in for the company from their japanese promotions alone in the last two years. like they were the top ranked touring korean artist in japan for the first half of the year and have four dome concerts coming up in september, so.

you mean 9:1 right?

actually most artists have a lot more say after contract renewals, especially if they are huge. they either give the artist what he/she want or he/she leaves for another agency. they still dont have the same freedom as western artists but much better than debut contracts

All I got from this is that there are people who get paid for styling Shinee like crap. And I am repulsed.
marisurisa 16th-Jul-2017 10:50 pm (UTC)
I wish Shinee all the most beautiful things in the world, all the hapiness and everything they desire. And if it costs money I'll happilly contribute now when I know the money goes to them.

I knew they were doing well but I had no idea Jonghyun had a Lamborghini holy crap. Imo SHINee is truly in the best position, not just in terms of profit distribution, but because they might be the only SM group that can show success in all of its members solo activities. Plus they all get along with each other and have been free of major scandals. Most of that may be pure luck, but the delulu in me says it's because talent + character pays off lol.

yeah lmao he got it sometime last year, i think? but he was already bringing in the $$$$ for awhile before then.

but i agree with you. shinee had their roughest moment from, like, mid-2011 to late-ish 2012 internally but they were able to break through that and they've gotten both closer personally and stronger professionally since then.

i only care about f(x) from this company so i wanna know what their split is. 0:10?

good for them working these back into their contracts tho. i also like that this and all the others' splits are public information to help the newer groups seek the same when renewal time comes up

byeolbyeol 16th-Jul-2017 11:59 pm (UTC)
given that f(x) haven't had any activities since early last year and, at that point, they hadn't officially? renewed yet? it's hard to say. but i figure that, individually, both krystal and victoria at rich as hell - especially victoria. luna is doing a lot of variety and stage work so she's probably doing okay but who knows about amber tbh

at this point I've given up hopes of sm promoting them like umj so you bet that I'm happy the boys are at least getting That Cash

in all honesty - might be a bit of a personal opinion here, but as someone said above, I really think the past few years have been what I'd deem their best moment. sometimes it's easy to miss the hype from their early years, but right now... they are free to put out good music, indulge in concepts that fit them best, have a good relationship among themselves and with their fans while still making amounts money I can barely imagine in numbers and that. that's a good place to be as an artist, imo.

I wish them all the happiness and success in the world. ♥

Good for Shinee and other artists who have it the same. I wonder what their individual contracts are like, especially Taemin ($$$$$$). Even if any of them leaves SM, I hope Shinee continues. Their work ethic is great and they seem to genuinely get along w each other.

I heard it was hard to get all of SNSD to resign again. I always wonder who'll resign when the time comes.

i'm glad all those years of unfair contract are finally paying off ... shinee seem pretty content about their own futures and agendas so im glad they also get good money doing what they like in the way they want 👍

like heechul once said

Knowing that Shinee is getting coin pleases me greatly.

Get those ₩

(But more importantly, this means they're not being worked to death.)
jinkiestabi 17th-Jul-2017 02:23 am (UTC)
I randomly bought physical of 1 of 1 cause I was so happy they sold out their Japan seats and merch for the SM Town Live. I think they were the only artist, too?
sra_interesante 17th-Jul-2017 03:24 am (UTC)
i saw a tweet about that on my tw feed but i cant seem to find it right now ... i think shinee were the only boyband merch sold out, there was another girlgroup with sold out merch but i didnt payed attention if it was fx or snsd (or maybe redvelvet?)
mylovebelt 17th-Jul-2017 02:55 am (UTC)
I had this thoughtful comment written and my computer just froze so basically I love them so much I'm so happy for them. can't wait to buy 10 copies for their next comeback since they're getting $$$$$$$
kristinl356 17th-Jul-2017 03:10 am (UTC)
do you know what their profit split was before? or does sm have like a standard one it uses for all their artists through the initial contract?
byeolbyeol 17th-Jul-2017 03:27 am (UTC)
there's a pann post that implies that the profit split before first renewal is... not very generous. like 2:8 for groups that have been around for less than five years, and maybe closer to 4:8 for ones that cross over the five year mark.
