KFA Seeking Disciplinary Action against Colombian Player's Racist Gesture

The Korea Football Association has asked Colombia's football association to take disciplinary action against one of its national team members for making a racist gesture at his South Korean opponents during a friendly match, officials said Saturday.

Edwin Cardona made the mocking gesture toward South Korean captain Ki Sung-yueng during Friday's testy match at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, south of Seoul. It came after the end of some pushing and shoving that ensued following James Rodriguez's foul on Kim Jin-su around the 63rd minute mark.

The gesture was caught on South Korean television, and Ki said it was "absolutely unacceptable."

"We're taking the necessary procedures with regard to the ungentlemanly gesture of the Colombian player," a KFA official told Yonhap News Agency. "The usual practice is to file a complaint with the relevant football association and request a disciplinary measure."

The KFA said Colombia Football Federation Presdident Ramon Jesurun Franco sent a letter to the KFA to apologize for Cardona's action and promised that such an incident will not happen again. In a response letter, the KFA said it was a shame to see such an incident happen during the friendly match, and it wants the federation to take a "relevant measure" against Cardona since FIFA takes racist actions seriously.

After his behaviour caused outrage from fans around the world, Cardona offered an apology for his action, saying in a video posted at the Colombian Football Federation's twitter page that he didn't mean to despise anybody, but he is sorry if his action offended anyone or caused a misunderstanding.

Officials said the football's world governing body FIFA is expected to take action.

"If our association's complaint is made known, FIFA will become aware of it, and then FIFA and the relevant continental football association will review the case and take separate disciplinary action," a KFA official said.

The official said the association will first wait and see what action the Colombian Football Federation will take before considering filing an official complaint with FIFA.

"If we consider it necessary to file a complaint with FIFA, we can do it later as we have to take the relations between the football associations of the two countries into consideration," the official said.

He has since apologized for making the eye gesture, but denied it being racist, saying it was "misinterpreted". SureJan.gif

I can't stand football/soccer players (or their fans) they're always doing racist shit like this

The outrage🤔

Hard to sympathize with a nonapologist country when it comes to their constant belittlement and thievery of black bodies and culture. Take this and let it simmer, maybe next time they'll understand why so many are outraged at an entire musical dedicated to making fun of black people😒

Lmao child please. Antiblackness in asia is just as rampant as it is in America. It isn't a "they made fun of black ppl" one time type of nonsense. For example in China there are laws specifically made to hinder Africans. Black people are openly discriminated against and in some instances physically harmed. Some of which I have experienced first hand. Because I am black in asia my intelligence is always put into question whether it comes to me being fluent in the local language or working here. Everyone is so amazed a black person could even graduate college let alone speak a langauge other than their own. And this is only the east asian community abroad. The East Asian american community is just as disrespectful and blatantly racist towards black people.

My feelings toward the matter remain the same. The outrage is there when racist actions are committed towards Asians but the same respect and concern isn't given by them when it comes to them doing the exact same to black people. Korea has receipts for centuries on this.

Furthermore I shouldn't have to even explain this, but I already did. But what you not gone do is try to invalidate my emotions and experiences on the matter by calling them kindergarten like. It don't work that way hun. I as a black woman do not have to have any sympathy towards those who oppress me. Aside from white individuals, Asians are also included in that mix.

I feel ya! The outrage I see when someone says/does something remotely offensive towards Asians is 10000x times intensified than it is when it is against black/brown people. I don't know if it is the affect of kpop and koreaboos feeling a sense of comradery with Asians, but it's disgusting either way. And like you said, it isn't because " 'a' Korean/Asian did something offensive once so I don't have respect for the whole; instead (and when every country in the world is starting to catch up with the whole 'don't make fun of other ethnic groups, or other races' thing) Asian TV still show blatant, abhorrent racist shows/comedy-sketches without any sense of regret. And they rarely get called-out for it from their own people...

so yeah.. I fucking feel you.

PS: Not saying this should happen more often, or that I approve of it it. But do I feel any sympathy? Nahh

sigh. this kinda reminds me of when I went to a South American country and I got similar reactions/gestures
cmyesaito 12th-Nov-2017 01:37 pm (UTC)
being asian and latin american, I know there's lots of racism here, most through micro-agressions... people think things like this is "funny" and don't realize their damage
I know so many people, even with phd, who think it's normal to call someone a "jap" or "oriental" it's super annoying
I hope he gets punished
jessi_cola 12th-Nov-2017 07:31 pm (UTC)
TBH I think that makes his gesture even worse as it was clearly not the time nor place to be "funny"
mjspice 12th-Nov-2017 02:52 pm (UTC)
Lmao ok yeah I'm SURE he was just rubbing some grit out of his eyes /sarcasm
