BTS Talks About Concept For Their Next Album

With fans eagerly awaiting the second installment of their “Love Yourself” series, BTS has offered some insight into the concept behind their next album.

Although Suga warned that the album was still very much in the planning stages, he revealed that the members had been focusing on one potential concept in particular.

“So far, we only have a broad idea [of our concept], so we’re not at the stage where we can say for sure,” he said. “But the concept that we discussed amongst ourselves while we were on tour last year was happiness. What is happiness, exactly, and what do we need to do in order to become happy?”

“I believe that it’s impossible to achieve happiness simply by trying to be happy,” he went on, “but I also think that we should still make an effort to become happier. It’s something that we need to study and try to figure out. Ever since I was little, I spent a lot of time thinking about what happiness really is and what you need to do to achieve it. I don’t think anyone ever teaches you that.”

He added, “I think that if we start the conversation, a lot of people will be interested in discussing it.”

RM shared that he was personally interested in tying the idea of happiness into the “Love Yourself” theme that the group is currently exploring.

“I was also fixated on the idea of happiness until early last year,” he commented. “However, during a recent trip to Japan, I read a newspaper column that said that humans can never attain the happiness that they desire. It said that once we reach one goal, we end up developing a yearning for something else.”

RM said that the article had resonated with him because it mirrored his personal experience. “We also thought that if we won first place, we would be happy,” he recalled. “But then there’s always another goal to strive for.”

“So rather than just happiness, I’d like to search for a conclusion to our current theme of ‘Love Yourself,'” he said. “My dream is not to win first place on the Billboard chart, but instead to love myself properly. I want to take a step towards finding a way to love myself more.”

The BTS leader also hinted that their next album may have a darker vibe than their last. “I think there’s a lot to be said on the subject [of loving yourself],” he remarked, “including explorations of darkness and loneliness.”

Hallelujah, emo, fake-deep kings may be back?

Who said the Most [Iconic] Beautiful Moment in Time is not forever?

I'm so ready for this. All HYYH-hating blasphemers can just direct their selves to DNA.

HYYH is when they peaked musically tbh i've been waiting for an album half as good as HYYH 2 for 2 years, I'm ready to receive
baboboy 29th-Jan-2018 09:42 am (UTC)
I’m here for this and ready to throw my money at them
yxerin 29th-Jan-2018 09:46 am (UTC)
this basically just confirms what i've already been thinking the next concept is gonna be about. also i'm happy that they (or i mean at least namjoon) seem to realize the relative unimportance of awards/numbers when it comes to things that actually matter, i just wish they could reflect that in their other statements a bit more
shawarmafordays 29th-Jan-2018 09:48 am (UTC)
I like his point about not finding happiness always but if it means their lyrics will be more relatable because of millennial angst. I'm here for it.

i'm so ready hhhhhh

ppl will say they're fake deep and maybe so!! i live for the fake deepness of hyyh pt 1 + 2!! shower me in it

on a more serious note i'm glad they're not closing themselves from exploring some darker themes again after love yourself but at the same time i'm already exhausted if they're doing so bc i despise stan twt's fetishation of sadness and suffering

I'd love for them to go the darker route again although I know people are done with their "fake-deep" concepts tho the same people who wanted a happy and chill concept hated DNA and HER lol. Here for more relatable and deeper lyrics. Take my money, Bangtan!

Lol I feel attacked haha. The problem with DNA for me wasn't so much the concept as it was the terrible song. The whole thing, including the MV, just felt so rushed. Also some of the outfits were...choices.

I don't care for the fake depth but I have to admit now that their music is usually better when they go that route lol.

I Need U 2.0 is coming!

i hope so too *fingers crossed*. if this is gonna be their new and improved hyyh era then i am totally here for it. bst may have the best visuals, but hyyh was their best overall package. i also need yoongi to be way more involved in the production in this, because if there's anyone who can bring the darker vibe in the way that i like, it's him.
swegkitten 29th-Jan-2018 11:09 am (UTC)
oh good, i've been needing more ~edgy~ songs in my life lately

the angst is real

but also i am happy that they're allowed to go through their, what are no doubt very complicated, feelings about happiness and fulfillment as they experience it.

the past 2 years have brought massive change into their lives and i hope the album making process can help them cope with it at least a little.
flowerjellyfish 29th-Jan-2018 12:14 pm (UTC)
trying really hard not to hope for HYYH pt 3 because i know i'll only disappoint myself😢 i loved the feel of that era sm, if we even get a hint of that again i'll be so happy
rainstormraider 29th-Jan-2018 02:08 pm (UTC)
I love their fake deep shit. Especially all the myth making that drives the fandom crazy but leads to absolutely no where.

I am here for this.

i've been waiting for HYYH-ish album for years. i know all that talent is still out there, don't let me down guys

(mindless pop is great but why have dna when you can have house of cards?)
rosiemotleymind 29th-Jan-2018 04:14 pm (UTC)
House of Cards is pretty much their magnum opus
slobfemme 29th-Jan-2018 03:52 pm (UTC)
i can't wait
rosiemotleymind 29th-Jan-2018 04:14 pm (UTC)
Give it to me. I loved the Wings era but hyyh is literally their best.
queenhinata 29th-Jan-2018 04:34 pm (UTC)
it seems like Soompi translated only part 2 of the full interview?
part 1 "Behind our success is sincerity and ability, not social media"

part 3 We once fanboyed. We relate to ARMY

as always, bts interviews are gems. i learn so much about music and life from yoongi and rm in particular.

i'm really excited for whatever vibe bts will explore. dna was cute and carefree; spring day was sentimental. first part of Love Yourself was positive overall (beauty and idealism of love). based on what rm said, i'm thinking the second part of Love Yourself will be more about the dangers of love or negative side-effects of obsessive love (lyrically- like pied piper but deeper). i wonder what specific genres they'll do.

in part 1 of the interview yoongi and rm talked heavily about anxiety.

Oh thank you for these! I was actually wondering if someone translated the rest of the interview cause it looked quite long at the source. I'm going to add these to the post, too.
