EXO's debut JPN album "Countdown" debuts at #1 of the Oricon Weekly Chart

Korean boy band EXO's debut Japanese-language album, "Countdown," has topped the weekly Oricon Albums Chart.

The album sold approximately 89,425 copies. This makes EXO the fifth SM artist after BoA, TVXQ, Girls' Generation, and SHINee, to have an album reach the number one spot of the said chart.

The album spans singles and tracks recorded from their 2015 Japanese debut to 2016.

Their first week sales is way lower than all their previous releases (but not as low as CBX's) what's happening, Japan?

i'm proud of them for becoming the first overseas artist that has a #1 on oricon weekly charts with both their first single and their first album :')

also i guess their sales are lower because it's a full album whereas previous releases have been singles. i had to jump through so many hoops to order it in a way for it to even count on oricon, it's so unnecessary and expensive

I am trying to save money, even though the album has some extra stuff like the fanmeet and A-nation and MVs
but it's too expensive and for me I'll save my money for the Korean album later this year

agreed on all counts. I wasn't even planning on getting it tbh but then the pics came out and Jongdae looked like he did and so I had to.

the official count now is 96,352 -- which is p good for a kpop release in japan from what i understand.

love me right romantic universe and coming over were single albums and countdown is a full studio album so they can't really be compared in terms of sales. lmr and coming over both sold over 100k in the first week though lmr sold a bit more in the long run.

the only thing comparable to countdown would be one of their full length korean releases. and i think xoxo is still their best selling korean release in japan lol. my opinion as to what's going on with that is jpn fans started buying straight from korean sellers to help with the hanteo/gaon charts rather than buying from jpn stores bc the reward is greater if they chart higher/sell more on gaon/hanteo than oricon (with korean-language releases anyway). plus, there's kind of a downward trend w kpop releases in jpn in general.

edit: after looking some more, xoxo has 148,000+ sales, and then exodus with 84,000+ countdown is smack dab in the middle of that. it could very well sell more than xoxo (that closing ceremony boost!)

from my experience with shinee, singles usually sell more than albums. i’m not sure if that’s for everyone though, so maybe that’s why they seem lower.

I used to stan Japanese boybands and yeah the trend is usually that singles sell a lot more than albums so these numbers make sense to me too. Plus albums are a lot more expensive.

One of my friends is Japanese and she said that single albums and full albums are different (and have different charts) and that singles always sell way more because they're cheaper.
