Hi Omona! showminomoney and I are back earlier than we planned with a new drama review for a short (no pun intended) delightful little drama. Side note: reviewing a drama is much more difficult when you don't hate it. Our review for Short is below.
What made you want to start watching this?
keytfelt: I was looking online to see what was airing after Longing Heart and this 4 ep special drama for the Olympics was it! I recognized a few actors (looking at you, Son Jin Oppa from GG1979) and it seemed to be cute and harmless. Luckily it was being subbed on Viki. This M/T OCN slot has become our drama niche apparently.
showminomoney: I’ve been meaning to check out more of the work of the 5urprise members. They were so cute when they visited Gong Myung for WGM, so this was a good chance to see Kang Tae Oh in action. It also has Kim Doyeon, one of my I.O.I faves, in her acting debut. It’s also pretty short (heh), only 4 episodes long, so it seemed like a fun thing to check out.
keytfelt: Kang Tae Oh was one of the two 5urprise members that I hadn’t ever seen in anything, but now I love him and will definitely follow what he does in the future, he was very charismatic and adorable in this show. And he’s going to be the second lead in the next OCN M/T drama (That Oh Man Soo with Lee Jonghyun and Kim So Eun) so I’ll definitely be watching that.
showminomoney: I’ll watch too! I don’t know if I’m ready for him to be second lead though… I’ll totally end up rooting for him against Jonghyun, just cause.
Let’s talk about the characters, who did you like? Dislike? (spoilerific)
showminomoney: I loved everyone! I mean, I wasn’t really disappointed in any of the characters. I feel like they were well written and that most of their actions were well thought out. Maybe Eunho staying at the boarding house for too long was a little weird… but he was rebelling, so I guess that kind of makes sense. And the mom taking people in and giving them all free food was a little frustrating. Like, mom please.. You’re broke.
keytfelt: I actually liked everyone too! There were a few times when I was bugged by Eun Ho but by the end I loved them all. Even the people “against” our main characters had funny or redeeming moments. All in all, good characters that I wish we would have been able to spend more time with. A character I wasn’t expecting to have much storyline was Man Hee (Man Bok’s sister) but I really liked what she brought to the story.
So what happens in the show? Talk about the plot. (spoilerific)
keytfelt: Speed skating! Ho Young enters a speed skating race and beats Eun Ho, who’s supposedly the best. Because of this, he gets recruited to a sports university where his new rival Eun Ho also attends. Ho Young stays with his best friend Man Bok’s family and rich boy Eun Ho also decides to stay there. Man Bok’s cousin Ji Na shows up at the same time as the boys, having run away from the US to audition to become an idol. Man Bok’s sister Man Hee likes Ho Young, Ho Young likes Ji Na, Eun Ho likes Ji Na, love triangles galore!
A big thanks to the one person who giffed this show on Tumblr
Omo, what a twist! Thoughts on the big reveal? (spoilerific)
showminomoney: At first I thought the twist was that Hoyoung had to be Eunho’s pacemaker, but it turned out to be that Eunho’s dad was good childhood friends with Hoyoung’s dad! When Hoyoung’s dad Kang Baekho died in an accident, Eunho’s dad fulfilled their dream of opening a training center for skaters and named it after him. It was a really nice turn of events. Reminiscing on his past friendship helped with the dad’s character development I think…
keytfelt: We weren’t really expecting a twist at all, so that was very surprising. It made me a little sad, though, because I wish Ho Young and Eun Ho had grown up as speedskating bros together, but they at least became friends by the end.
Those darn plot holes! Which ones were the plot hole-iest? (spoilerific)
keytfelt: The only “plot hole” we could really think of was the fact that Idol Girl Ji Na ran away from the US to chase her dreams of becoming an idol without her parents knowing. First off, that plane ticket isn’t cheap. Secondly, how long did she camp out at her aunt’s house with her parents having no clue she wasn’t where she was supposed to be? The timeframe as a whole was a little confusing, I had no idea how much time was supposed to have passed at all.
Is there anything you would have changed about the drama? (spoilerific)
showminomoney: Just that I would’ve made it longer. It was so cute and I would’ve loved to have seen more of these characters.
keytfelt: I agree, four 50 minute episodes wasn’t enough, I wish this had been at least 12 episodes. I felt like the characters were well written and their stories could have been expanded more, but I was pleasantly surprised how satisfied I was with how everything wrapped up.
Final thoughts? Would you recommend this show to anyone?
keytfelt: Definitely! The drama was cute and satisfying and only took about 3½ hours total to watch. There were great friendships and it was such a relief to watch a show I just really enjoyed. I will absolutely be adding this to my short dramas recommendation list with Page Turner and Splash Splash Love.
showminomoney: Yes totally! It was cute and fun. Very Disney Channel Original Movie, but longer. It had competitive sports, rivalries, some romance, childhood friends, enemies to bffs, some singing, and a very hopeful and neatly tied up ending.
Out of 10 Omo’s, what would you rate this?
showminomoney: 8.5! Is that too high?
keytfelt: I already rated it an 8.5 on MyDramaList!
showminomoney: Nice. Great minds!
