Sunye Speaks out about Retirement Rumors and Controversy About Her Pregnancy Announcement

Sunye has spoken out about the controversy surrounding her comeback to the entertainment industry and third pregnancy.

Former Wonder Girls member Sunye has personally shared a message about her pregnancy and future career plans.

On September 22, Sunye took to Instagram to address the news of her third pregnancy, which her agency had announced the day before.

The singer began by expressing her excitement about the new addition to her family, writing, “Our third [child], another gift that has found its way to our family. I’m grateful and delighted to be able to share the news! I sincerely thank everyone who has expressed their support and congratulations.”

She added, “Also, to all the mothers in the world, stay strong!”

Sunye then went on to briefly mention the public’s response to the news, revealing that she had seen some of the hurtful comments written about her.

“I’m aware of the many articles bearing false information (not once have I ever announced my retirement) and the sharp-tongued comments [about me],” she wrote. “But in any case, I will find the right timing to show my best self and greet you with good music, so that I don’t feel embarrassed to call myself a professional singer. Thank you.”

Sunye Responds To Controversy Following News Of 3rd Pregnancy And Comeback To Entertainment Industry

Sunye has spoken out about the controversy surrounding her comeback to the entertainment industry and third pregnancy.

In January, Sunye appeared on JTBC’s “Stranger” where she gave viewers a glimpse of her married life in Canada. She then signed an exclusive contract with Polaris Entertainment in August and appeared on “The King of Mask Singer.”

Shortly after, Sunye announced that she was pregnant with her third child and shared her thoughts on her pregnancy and future career plans.

On September 23, Sunye posted a statement on her Instagram account about the controversy about her comeback and pregnancy.

The statement is as follows:

“There is a time to be silent and a time to speak out. I carefully opened this account to communicate with the grateful people who support me. I’m going to write a few words because I’m sad that it’s now turning into an uncomfortable battlefield.

“The most controversial issue is that problematic article that said that I don’t have any plans to return to the entertainment industry. A reporter from the U.S. JoongAng Ilbo must’ve come to the Haiti support concert at the Calvary Korean United Methodist Church in New Jersey a couple years ago.

“At the time, I was upset that something I hadn’t said was published as the headline for an article, but I just let it go. Currently, it’s become a big controversy due to that false report, so I think it’ll be better for me to tell you the truth.

“The ’emptiness’ that I spoke of was that I achieved what I had long dreamt of, but I didn’t feel the happiness or satisfaction that I expected.

“I hope you’ll understand it as a similar feeling to when you study hard in elementary, middle, and high school to go to college, but don’t feel that satisfaction once you enter college.

“These words were written as if my precious time as Wonder Girls all felt empty and useless, and because of that, I won’t return to the entertainment industry. My words were misconstrued due to the title of this hugely false report. I hope there won’t be any misunderstandings.

“My time as Wonder Girls was more valuable than any other time and a grateful time that I won’t ever forget. I know that the people who love me are hurting more than I am and fighting for me under these hurtful comments. It gives me lots of comfort and strength that you’re going through this with me.

“However, I hope that you guys will no longer spend your precious time and energy. I’m accepting all of this naturally. I know that life doesn’t just give me what I want and that it doesn’t always turn out according to my intentions, so I know that this is a time that I need to endure well.

“But I want to thank you for being with me once again. Polaris Entertainment knew about my pregnancy and my restrictive situation, but still approached me saying that we should work on things together carefully and slowly.

“It’s true that there currently aren’t any specific plans, but if the opportunity arises and presents itself, I have small hope of wanting to let you guys hear good music.

“I’m no longer a teen idol who has to care about her image, so I feel freer. I don’t know when that will be, but I’m waiting for the right time.

“Like the songs that I selected on ‘The King of Mask Singer,’ I just want to give you music that will give you a little comfort in your difficult life.

“I’m not trying to do something great. If I’m given the chance with my small talent of singing, I want to carefully give you some hope like a cool breeze.

“At the time of my marriage, it was very different how things were viewed from the outside and the inside, but I didn’t give a long explanation. I didn’t think that it was a good time.

“If the people who are disappointed in me and writing malicious comments right now want to hear from me that I’m sorry, then I want to apologize and say that I’m respectfully sorry.

“I hope you’ll find the answer for why you were born, why you need to live, what happens when you die, and sincerely hope that you’ll live a ‘happy’ life.”

Is there a whiff of arrogance floating throughout this? Or self-righteousness?
pikapika217 24th-Sep-2018 01:40 am (UTC)
defensiveness IMO

It's so odd because she said the drama is the rumor that, "I don’t have any plans to return to the entertainment industry" but then goes on to say, "It’s true that there currently aren’t any specific plans."
It's just like with Wonder Girls where she doesn't want to commit to ending things, but doesn't make any plans for activities/promotions either.

She could have just signed and released a digital single whenever she felt like it, but there was the big roll out about her return to the industry that didn't really go anywhere (for now).
petecarl 24th-Sep-2018 04:19 am (UTC)
I think she means that people thought that she would never return to the industry, not her current lack of album/promotion plans.

this is some non-apology apology bs

honestly i don't care why she's back in the game or what she intends to do, her ass was gone for years, and while her relevancy is there it's very mild at best. like, release something first, then talk?
donutism 24th-Sep-2018 03:01 am (UTC)
girl what sort of passive aggressive 'apology' is this?
petecarl 24th-Sep-2018 04:20 am (UTC)
It's cause she's not sorry. I mean, do people really want her to apologize for being pregnant or for returning to the industry?
angela_derp_otp 24th-Sep-2018 03:17 am (UTC)
RME i don't believe her one word tbqh.

She sounds so defensive, she really annoys me.
yumekanau 24th-Sep-2018 03:43 am (UTC)
Would someone be willing to explain in brief the reason for all the negativity towards her? I really haven't been following the situation...
pikapika217 24th-Sep-2018 03:48 am (UTC)
when she first got married she got pregnant soon after and during that time announced that she was taking time to do missionary work in Haiti and the whole thing came across as well as any missionary going to a place does.

People miss her voice but are wary of her intentions for this reason. I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but I can understand those who aren't as ready to trust her.
lil_poisonfrog 24th-Sep-2018 04:44 am (UTC)
That's good Polaris knew about the pregnancy but

“I’m no longer a teen idol who has to care about her image, so I feel freer. I don’t know when that will be, but I’m waiting for the right time."

You've been away from the industry too long, sis. While idols may be held to the most ridiculous standards, let's not pretend that a k-celeb of any sort can get away with not caring about their image. Not saying it's right but it is what it is.

Tbh she just seems delusional at this point. I know we only have the ifan perspective, but does she really have a big Korean fanbase that would support a comeback? Yenny and Yubin are becoming more irrelevant by the day and they didn't take any time off.

This is spicy!!!

The “apology” was funny. I don’t think she should have to apologize (or clarify) her desire for wanting to come back. It’s been four years and maybe things changed for her.

I won’t believe her career until I’m seeing press statements about her next single and all that.

I honestly don't get why she has to apologize.

I mean, she signed with Polaris, so obviously there ARE plans for her to be active in Korea again.

Given how pregnancies and motherhood are usually immediate reasona for women to be ousted from the Korean entertainment industry, I think it would be nice if she's (semi) active during this period. Could set a good example.
dior_chic 24th-Sep-2018 11:31 am (UTC)
I agree!
juhli 24th-Sep-2018 10:58 am (UTC)
Polaris knew she was pregnant and approached her anyway, so no one should have a problem with her signing with them.

To me it reads that she will record music when the time comes and will do it with no grand expectations of how well it will do. Because that isn't her goal anyways. So, yup, I can live with that.
dior_chic 24th-Sep-2018 11:30 am (UTC)
Yea it sounds perfectly fine, I see no problem with this.
horichansenpai 24th-Sep-2018 11:33 am (UTC)

People really making a woman apologise for getting pregnant and wanting to work at the same time lol kay

rainstormraider 24th-Sep-2018 01:38 pm (UTC)
That’s what I got from this and honestly not surprised in terms of K-pop.
daceymormont 24th-Sep-2018 02:07 pm (UTC)
I don't think she wants to become an idol again anyway, she's 30 now and has kids. She probably just wants to release music and sing whenever she feels like it.
There are valid reasons to side eye her but her being pregnant and returning to the industry and ~supposedly ruining Wonder Girls are not it.
I don't understand where the narrative that she ruined WG even came from because their momentum was killed the moment JYP shipped them off to the US. And don't get me wrong but I believe her and Sohee leaving WG (and even the failed US promotions) were the best things that could've happened to WG musically anyway, like I don't think we would've gotten an album as amazing as reboot if not for that so quit whining lol!

Like I said, there are valid criticisms. I love Sunye's voice and I love WG but even I can't turn a blind eye to her missionary thing. The comments about her have been so vitriolic tho and for no good reason.
