F(x) Luna Shares Troubling Vlog About How She Slims Her Legs (TW)

The past few month's episodes of Luna's Youtube channel, Luna's Alphabet, have been subbed (yay) but this troubling video is one of them (noooo). It's mostly focused on how she uses daily massage techniques with the intension of making her legs look less muscular, there is some diet talk too. The most troubling bit comes in her summary of the vid where, after spending 30 mins massaging her self, she says[Spoiler (click to open)]"The one who endures will win."

Luna sis this is excessive as hell. the things women convince themselves they need to do just to exist as a person. :(

jeeez, and I already feel suffocated by the pressure to lose weight, shave my legs and wear makeup. the idea of being this hyper-focused on an area of your body is... terrifying. muscular legs are so pretty and hot, please don't feel shame about them :(

(also it's bad enough that she feels this way about her own body but seeing her cheerfully encourage other people to go through all this and try to change their bodies makes me so mad)

I'm not sure I understand why using massage techniques to get her legs to look a certain way is so troubling?? Can someone explain?
lil_poisonfrog 9th-Oct-2018 02:18 am (UTC)
Yeah I'm curious if this is actually bad for you. Otherwise it's really no worse than shaving your legs. However I also don't think it's necessary to encourage her fans to do it either, even if there's no ill effects.

Do not take advice on beauty and health and fitness from idols and celebrities. Their whole careers are based on physical transformations and nothing else. Any advice they give would have unintended repercussions on the rest of us who live normal lives.

I really don’t get why people can’t grasp that.
lynethia 9th-Oct-2018 07:49 am (UTC)
I think it's less not getting it and more the results matter more than the method to achieve said results

I fucking love muscular legs, like my calves are strong and I love them for it, so seeing so much self hate for her body type is a damn shame. Fuck society for making her believe her worth comes down to how slim her legs are

Ikr ? I don't get it. What pisses me off the most is the homogeneity behind all of this. I don't want to watch copies of copies of copies. Let people enhance the unique beauty that they naturally have ♥
lil_poisonfrog 9th-Oct-2018 02:23 am (UTC)
I don't totally mind idols being open about stuff like this since it's indeed the reality of what they have to do to be successful in their industry. However, I don't think it should be presented as if it's a positive thing their fans should do either. I prefer the way Sorn has talked about having to "manage" your looks as an idol...with a more neutral/matter-of-fact tone.

my korean friend's mom said her legs were too thick so sent her to a place that did these kinds of massages.
she said she'd just scream and cry while getting them done, and would show up to class with bruises all over her legs from it...
iglooaustralia 9th-Oct-2018 03:15 am (UTC)
ugh that's awful
iglooaustralia 9th-Oct-2018 03:16 am (UTC)
idk if I can watch the video. I'm already thinking a lot about everything I eat, so I'm sure what ever "advice" she's dishing will just make it worse
vintage_boom 9th-Oct-2018 03:22 am (UTC)
best not to then!

i really wish women could freely walk the earth w/o people telling us how we should look.

me w/ my burning leg thought "a massage sounds nice" but if she's talking about it being painful??? hard pass.
kaykaydelight 9th-Oct-2018 04:10 am (UTC)
This is all smoke and mirrors. She slimmed her legs through weight loss and muscle reduction surgery. Which makes it even more troubling that she’s trying to peddle this method to her viewers.
pepsi_twist9 9th-Oct-2018 12:51 pm (UTC)
I'd assume she'd still have to perform upkeep though, they're both terrible either way
gigabytexx 9th-Oct-2018 05:56 am (UTC)
I’m very interested with this vlog bec of my calves shape that is looking like a pipe also all the fat goes to my ankle. I dont really like the chub area around my thighs near the knees, but i think that one is fixable with exercise. I just want to know how to remove the ankle fat.
But damn I tried her massage for 3 minutes and it hurts like hell 😭

Also what brand are those products? I love cool gels. That might reduce the pain.
lydzi 9th-Oct-2018 09:00 am (UTC)
I'm sure your calves are perfect. If everyone looked like everyone else it would be a boring world. Exercise well, eat greens and less meat and considering you're talking about fat around the knee, I suspect it might be a water retention so pay attention to the salt you consume daily, try to lessen it, drink a lot of water. And that's it. Don't hurt yourself because this is all truly nonsense. *hugs*

This doesn't bother me that much tbh. It's things like girl's making their boobs bigger which really disappoints and angers me... in part just cause it sets a terrible image for young ppl who look up to them, like Hyuna who has a lot of female fans. I just wish they could want to set a good example for the young women who live with the ideal that keeps being reinforced by women like her.

There are just so many more invasive and life-changing things like plastic surgery that people seem okay with (well, until it goes wrong anyway).. =-=

god, i remember back in the day when netizens shat so much on her "fat" legs. here we are.
lynethia 9th-Oct-2018 07:44 am (UTC)
Exactly why this advice she's dishing out is so depressing to hear/read :(
The amount of undiagnosed BDD running rampant in the idol circle is chilling to consider
shuang_yue 9th-Oct-2018 08:18 am (UTC)
Erm... so basically she's more or less doing foam roller stretching without the foam roller? That's how it looks to me. Rolling your legs IS a little painful but nothing too extreme and it does slim them - visually. It does not make your muscles/fat go away, let's not kid ourselves. I just had to look it up in a dictionary because English is not my native language but google 'fascia' - it's connective tissue fitting like a glove around your body. If you exercise but don't stretch enough, your muscles get kind of cramped and bulky. Rolling your body makes both muscles and fascia relax and it feels ~amazing afterwards. But it's best to ask a professional to show you how to use the roller so I don't know if showing those massage techniques without any disclaimers is the responsible thing to do, Luna...

As soon as i saw, i thought of this device my neighbor bought -- ashley black fascia blaster -- she used it for a few weeks before moving to the next fad item
lydzi 9th-Oct-2018 09:03 am (UTC)
This is nonsensical. I'm not even going to click.
jillyjellly 9th-Oct-2018 10:32 am (UTC)
i don't think i can watch this. i clicked on some korean diet video once and my feed just got filled with all sorts of "70kg -> 42kg" videos afterwards. these girls were basically saying that they'd suck on ice all day and would eat once piece of kimchi if they got really really hungry. it was so sad and fucked up dishing out "advice" like that
gigabytexx 9th-Oct-2018 06:43 pm (UTC)
I think this Luna video is pretty okay to me, sounds normal. But omg that 42 Kg is horrible though :( it's too extreme.
