RM's English is criticized by The Times, article also questions their masculinity

London’s The Times newspaper reported on BTS's arrival in London for two shows on October 9 and 10 and criticised the English-language skills of RM.

The article said RM’s use of English language was characterised by “his occasionally baffling syntax gives the impression he is channelling Joey rather than Chandler”. The article was referring to two Friends characters: the dim-witted Joey Tribbiani and the intelligent Chandler Bing.

The article also questioned the band members’ masculinity – “When the boys dance in their T-shirts, there is never a glimpse of abs; there are leather trousers but no crotch-grabbing or pelvis-grinding” – and asked why they weren’t in relationships with women despite being megastars.

this straight up infuriates me in ways i can't even fully describe. like where do i begin with the blatant ethnocentrism, toxic masculinity and, at the very least, subpar journalism. i'd like to see this moron try speaking a language besides english.
simplyseasalt 10th-Oct-2018 07:01 am (UTC)
It's kind of odd to acknowledge he learned English from watching a sitcom and then criticize his syntax...so long as you can understand what he's trying to get across, does it really have to matter whether his English is impeccable or not?

Also Sugar is pronounced Sugar? Is that true or...?
aeipathy 10th-Oct-2018 07:42 am (UTC)
lol no it's more like shuga
chikage_chan 10th-Oct-2018 07:20 am (UTC)
What the actual fuck was this article? Does mocking someone's usage of a second language make whoever douche wrote this feel better about themselves? And putting Suga above all other members was ridiculous. Articles like this are the reason entertainment journalism is losing so much space to sns and direct fan/artist contact. It’s not worth reading poorly written bullshit.
mallmouse 10th-Oct-2018 07:42 am (UTC)
wow, all that Suga obsession. The guy's probably writing YG/fan fanfiction rn
Fuck this jerk. So many things he could have focused on, not only within the K-Pop industry, but also on the kind of change BTS have brought on. But he was too prejudiced for that.

nana_the_dwarf 10th-Oct-2018 07:47 am (UTC)
Wow. Very professional.

Lemme guess, the author is a white guy.
sjtaazrz 10th-Oct-2018 08:08 am (UTC)
Yuuuup

The author is Richard Lloyd Parry and a quick google search shows you a picture.
mntsuklaa 10th-Oct-2018 08:07 am (UTC)
I almost feel sorry for the guy (obvs it has to be a man) who wrote this because he's going to receive some strongly worded letters/emails/tweets. But only almost. He has it coming.
Sincerely: a person who avoids speaking English with native speakers for this exact reason.
lydzi 10th-Oct-2018 08:10 am (UTC)
Oh I wonder if that wasn't what the author was after actually. Some people thrive with even the bad publicity, they can make their name known that way. See Piers Morgan.

lydzi 10th-Oct-2018 08:11 am (UTC)
Not even worth my time tbh. Come back to me when you'll be a true journalist, meanwhile I'l be over there, listening to BTS and learning how to pronounce korean who is just one of the most difficult language in the world. Cheers :D
daceymormont 10th-Oct-2018 08:26 am (UTC)
i bet the guy can't even speak anything else but english rme
babyjenkski 10th-Oct-2018 09:08 am (UTC)
They obviously need to understand/learn more about kpop. Quick reference...having a girlfriend is career suicide.
lil_poisonfrog 10th-Oct-2018 09:30 am (UTC)
Lol right, plus everyone who isn't a naive child knows that idols date on the low anyway, hence how dating "scandals" come about. Many of them have even talked about it over the years on varieties and such. But that's a cultural difference you wouldn't understand if the only research you did before the interview was reading their wikipedia page 🤔
lil_poisonfrog 10th-Oct-2018 09:25 am (UTC)
Racist trash. Heard he gave a classic non-apology too. 🙄

I came across a video of the Beatles messing with obnoxious interviewers that I think Armys would appreciate. Ofc it's not as bad as being on the receiving end of racism, but it goes to show that male journalists who are unnecessarily dismissive of boybands have been around forever. Too bad BTS are too polite to dish it right back like the Beatles did though lol

100% this tho. Why do men have to hate everything that women like? Slightly off topic, but a buddy and I were chatting about how much vitriol young Justin Bieber got as like a 13-year-old from grown ass men. "BLARGH can you believe that Baby got 300 million views on youtube?! What's WRONG with society?!" Well done bro, you spewed hate at a talented 13-year-old kid and towards his female young fans who did nothing wrong other than enjoy a thing.

This part is making me chuckle because at the Chicago show I saw both Jungkook and Jimin’s abs. They were really thottin out lol. But other than that trash article written by a subpar journalist.
youtubelargo 10th-Oct-2018 01:05 pm (UTC)
Yeah, beyond being infuriatingly racist and hypermasculine, this article isn't even fucking accurate. 90 percent of BS&T's choreo is crotch grabbing.

I think it's really amazing for Rapmon to be able to SPEAK English as someone who has never lived in overseas, I mean I can english. I can write & read english easily and very little english words that I dont understand. But to speak of it is very difficult, to arrange the words in my head and to be able to talk it out. In texts we still can edit our words but in speaking we can't, so I really admire him for that.
I still have a hard time watching movies without subtitle lol, Like no, I dont need translation of my own language, most of the times I still need to watch an english movie WITH an english text because eventhough I can hear what they're saying, it takes quite some time to process & translate it into my own language in my head, and by reading the text it's usually faster to understand.
daynr 10th-Oct-2018 02:23 pm (UTC)
totally agree! (at least with non-English languages, as English is my first, but my others the verbal requires a quickness in comprehension/composing that is HARD.)
mandm13 10th-Oct-2018 10:39 am (UTC)
I won't ever bother to read the whole thing, reading things like "coming soon to a teenage bedroom near you" and the "no groupies. no parties. no drugs" already infuriated me. And I guess this person has never tried to learn a second language, otherwise he wouldn't have made such a childish comment. Pathetic.
suggestivepeach 10th-Oct-2018 11:47 am (UTC)

Jesus. White men continue to be threatened by the idea of people finding Asian men attractive, huh? You’d think this kind of racist and toxic mindset would be left in the past but nopE!

mallmouse 10th-Oct-2018 11:54 am (UTC)
so hoping we'll start seeing more being written on this (though obviously not by white men. They feel too threatened to appreciate it)
