[TW] The East Light's Lee Seok Cheol opens up about recent reports of abuse + to take legal action

The East Light’s leader and member Lee Seok Cheol recently opened up about the physical and verbal abuse from their agency’s producer and CEO.

Warning: Article contains descriptions of violence. (Please proceed to read with caution)

On October 19, along with a lawyer named Jung Ji Seok, Lee Seok Cheol attended the planned press conference and spoke on the recent reports of abuse. Previously, it was reported that the members of The East Light suffered from physical and verbal abuse from producer “A” as well as Media Line Entertainment’s CEO Kim Chang Hwan starting from before their debut until last year.

During the press conference, Lee Seok Cheol stated, “As the leader of The East Light and as one of the K-pop artists who lead Korean culture, I could no longer tolerate the pain that our members were going through. We decided to hold a press conference in hopes of eliminating child abuse and violation of human rights in the K-pop industry.”

He shared, “From 2015 to 2017, the producer repeatedly made us get on the floor as he hit our buttocks with baseball bats and iron bars in the practice room or in the recording studio. He even threatened to kill us if we ever told our parents.”

Lee Seok Cheol also mentioned his little brother Lee Seung Hyun, who is in the same group. “My brother was locked in the recording studio and the producer hit his head, thighs, arms, and buttocks so many times. His head had bloody wounds and bruises. He’s been traumatized after all the threats and violence, and he is currently getting psychotherapy treatment.”

The group’s lawyer Jung Ji Suk also revealed that Lee Seung Hyun was forced to leave the group after protesting to the CEO about the return of producer “A” to the agency. Jung Ji Suk stated, “Lee Seung Hyun and Lee Seok Cheol’s parents did not know about this until the agency promised them that violence towards the members would never happen again. They did not know that the violence happened repeatedly. They only knew about one incident. They found out about the whole situation after they pleaded with their sons to tell them everything when Lee Seung Hyun got removed from the group.”

He added, “Not only Lee Seung Hyun but also Lee Seok Cheol decided that they cannot stay with this inhumane agency any longer. We have decided to take legal action against both producer ‘A’ and CEO Kim Chang Hwan.”

The East Light’s agency previously released an official statement regarding producer “A” as well as the CEO.
There are a lot of twitter threads going around with more detailed descriptions of the press conference, but many of them are HIGHLY TRIGGERING and graphic, please keep this in mind before reading as well.

I also summed up some of the main points from these twitter threads and the article and provided additional information for those who do not know the group but please note that this is based off the translations only - I do not understand Korean and did not watch the actual press conference.
[Spoiler (click to open)]
-Lee Seokcheol is the eldest of the group at 18 years old.
-The PD is Yoon Young il. The assault took place from 2015 to 2017, and what seems to be the reason this case is coming to light now is that the producer has returned to the company.
-Lee Seokcheol only mentioned the abuse that he, his brother Lee Seunghyun and Lee Eunsung (another member) faced. He mentioned that he could not discuss the other members assault.
-When Lee Seunghyun complained about the producers return, he was removed from The East Light.
-Lee Seokcheol has also left The East Light and is planning to take action.

My main goal in posting about this is to spread the word about this. It's hard to tell if this will gain traction in Korea as it was just reported on as I am posting this, but I don't want this to get buried because it will be easier for the perpetrators to get away. I may not be able to provide further updates to this comm in the upcoming days, but as one last thing: if planning to send words of encouragement to the members, do proceed with caution. As of now only Lee Seokcheol has spoken up about the abuse and what may be even scarier, only him and his brother Seunghyun have been said to have left the company. What this means is that the other four boys may as of this moment still be with Media Line.

So first off I am just absolutely horrified. I've been scrolling through twitter search and at each new update I saw it just got worse and worse. I really hate that it had to come to Seokcheol having to publically confirm the news like this and have his face in the cameras this way, and my heart really goes out to how brave he was to share his story. I only saw a small clip of the news broadcast and the way his expression changed as it went on just...

I think one of the worst parts is that I used to watch a lot of their music delivery vlives, and you could tell how passionate they were about making music and singing and performing - and it hurts that they suffered so much for their dreams. The worst part is that a lot of the violence mentioned was done because they were just doing "kid things" (the worst example being getting punished for... playing... soccer), or for small mistakes that they made. it's just absolutely horrifying.

Also have to add one of the worst parts? They've been calling the PD Devil PD all this time but we all thought it was a joke...

Also, I didn't want to put this in the post but there is a lot of speculation going around (the admittedly very small fanbase) about the status of the members.[In a spoiler because a lot of it is a mix of my speculation as well] The four other members have unfollowed the two brothers on instagram right as this news was breaking out, and are still all following their CEO. In fact, literally at the same time that the news broke out, Sagang was walking the runway and a preview of a show Woojin is on came out. I'm so so so scared that they are afraid of leaving the company.

what am i reading

beaten with baseball bats and iron bars? threatened to be choked with guitar strings? and they were all in their early teens when it started? what the hell. i hope the investigation pushes through and the pd and ceo ends up in jail and the agency goes bankrupt. and even then that's not enough.
vintage_boom 19th-Oct-2018 05:56 am (UTC)
those poor kids :(
nana_the_dwarf 19th-Oct-2018 06:00 am (UTC)
What the fuck. What a psychotic bastard, I’m glad he was named; he needs to rot in jail for this.
aeipathy 19th-Oct-2018 06:06 am (UTC)
damn reading the details made me cry, he's extremely brave to do this. i hope everyone involved gets justice served.
lelouchikaru 19th-Oct-2018 06:12 am (UTC)
the CEO (Kim Changhwan) and the group is trending first and third on Naver atm

I feel so sorry for these boys, I hope they all find strength
cosmicdaze 19th-Oct-2018 06:22 am (UTC)
i'm so scared for them. it's incredibly brave of lee seokcheol to come forward like this. i hope those piece of shit abusers go to jail and these kids can go back to their family and get therapy.
edanz_castle 19th-Oct-2018 07:35 am (UTC)
How sickening. I hope the other members find the courage to speak up as this continues. Poor guys.
gathyou 19th-Oct-2018 07:56 am (UTC)
This is horrifying. I feel like tearing up when I read about it. They're KIDS.
I don't have much faith but I really hope the boys find justice, and that their abusers + the people who allowed the abuse to happen go in jail.
lydzi 19th-Oct-2018 07:57 am (UTC)
This makes me sick. Honestly. So many people had to known and everyone shut their mouth. Kuddos to that kid to stand against the situation and be all "it's enough". Obiously he has parents that tried to understand and hopefully seem supportive.
The other fours need to be saved right now and that producer and manager be in jail. Don't disappoint me one more time SK. This is child abuse, there's no mistery about it.

This industry is seriously so terrible and nothing is ever done about it.

Thanks op for the post <3 the more people talk about it, the less it will go one more time under the carpet.

jfc if there isn't going to be a police investigation and trials that end with jail convictions I'm going to be so fucking sad and disappointed.
I'm glad that he and his bother got out and are getting help (I also hope they continue to do so long term) but I'm also really worried for the other 4. I really hope that the next update on this situation is that they got out too.
wafflesnmilk 19th-Oct-2018 09:56 am (UTC)
:(((((( I did have a nagging feeling it’d be either seunghyun or seokcheol doing the press con because they’re less popular and probably not as well regarded as the other 4 :(((.

If this doesn’t gain any traction in the media im hoestly afraid they will try to brush everything off and continue the group as 4 :(( Depending on the severity of the abuse and how young they are , they might just go with what the company says :(( They only just finished a concert and performance at Kcon Thailand recently too . Idk this breaks my heart , i hope they drag the monsters responsible to jail.
eelgirl13 19th-Oct-2018 06:42 pm (UTC)
i also read that it was seunghyun who was apparently the most beaten. :( Seokcheol most likely chose to speak up over Seunghyun since he is the eldest.

It is gaining a lot of traction in the media from what I've seen but I'm still afraid it might get brushed off. The other four keeping silent is what scares me and I really hope it is because they are also preparing to take action and not because they have been scared into staying in order to continue with their dream.
sub_divided 20th-Oct-2018 01:29 am (UTC)
They're probably the most musically talented though, they don't need this. Even if they're not on TV, they can still form a band and do music.
ashdevilrun23 19th-Oct-2018 11:48 am (UTC)
This so upsetting and disturbing :(((
How can you beat up some kids just because they were playing soccer jfc
goshipgurl 19th-Oct-2018 02:32 pm (UTC)
these poor kids :( i hope they all get out of this company and get the help (physical and psychical) they need.

it makes it even worse when you realize that this is not an exception in the kpop industry... i don't wanna know how many idols are out there that get treated like this by their CEOs and PDs.
yxerin 20th-Oct-2018 10:32 am (UTC)
mte. the fact that this went on for so long shows you what kind of industry this is
idlewilds3 19th-Oct-2018 05:09 pm (UTC)
First, I would like this PD, CEO, and any management level at this company (because I would call bullshit that other staff doesn’t know about this) to either die in a fire or confined to a room full of Legos with no footwear. Secondly, I am SCREAMING at the other four’s parents to take thir kids and run. Like why are they still there?! OMG!! Even if their kids weren’t abused yet, why would they take that chance with these monsters?! If they’re so fucking deluded that they don’t think these brothers are speaking the truth, the company is hella tainted now so why stick with a sinking ship?!
eelgirl13 19th-Oct-2018 06:49 pm (UTC)
honestly the fact that the other four have been silent and no word of them leaving or anything scares me more that they may have been scared into staying. I'm really hoping this radio silence is because they are also preparing their leave...
blck_ink 19th-Oct-2018 05:24 pm (UTC)
i can't imagine how scared they must have felt and still feel. they're kids for god's sake. it's disgusting how these people abused these kids knowing damn well that they couldn't defend themselves. throw everyone in that damn company in jail!! i for real hope that they get the help, love and justice they deserve.
rainstormraider 19th-Oct-2018 07:01 pm (UTC)
The way trainees and idols are treated I always assumed that they suffered from verbal abuse but to learn that they suffer physical abuse as well, I just...
Burn this agency to the ground! Lock up these adults!
modestgoddess79 19th-Oct-2018 07:18 pm (UTC)
this abuser need to go to jail, I'm so tired of abusers being allowed to walk away after a weak apology
suggestivepeach 19th-Oct-2018 11:08 pm (UTC)

Absolutely horrifying. Those boys are so brave for speaking out. That monster needs to go to be promptly sent to jail to rot for the rest of his life. I hate that there are such people in the world who would abuse their power like this, and I hate that there are people like that CEO who are aware that this shit is happening right under their nose and ALLOW it to happen!!!
