Xia Junsu Tears Up At Comeback Concert As He Opens Up About His Broadcast Ban & Artist Life

some points he mentioned, in case you don't watch the full vid:

  • he thought it would be impossible for him to perform at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium again (which is where he held his last concerts before enlistment ~2 years ago; capacity 11~12k)

  • he finds it surprising that he has teenage fans especially because it's been about 9 years since he's been able to have exposure (via broadcasts/television) aside from the EBS Space Empathy program and the articles written by journalists/news

  • he doesn't feel like he's a celebrity because he doesn't get to go on broadcasts and wonders if he should even be called a celebrity

  • it's not a level playing field since he doesn't get to go on broadcasts and promote properly, but he's okay with it since it's a path he chose

  • even though they won the lawsuits and all, he didn't expect that he wouldn't be able to go on tv for this long

  • when he was watching tv in the barracks with his fellow soldiers, he saw some actress and comedian appear on a variety show who had been on a blacklist for some 10 years or so and because of administration change were able to come on tv again, and he wanted to cheer them on

  • he realized that a lot of people/general public think either (a) he doesn't go on tv because he doesn't want to (not true - he would like to be able to go on shows) or (b) assume he has been appearing on tv; so they don't know that he's not able to go on broadcasts

  • what he wants is just to be able to sing his song at least once or twice on TV to properly promote his new albums/songs, he's not asking to appear on variety shows to tell his story (although that'd be nice) or even get 1st place

  • thinking about all this, for the first time in his life, his self esteem hit rock bottom and he thought about quitting being a singer, around jan/feb of this year, because it was making things hard for his fans

  • "You guys can let go of being a fan when it wears you down. Really. When work and life catches up on you, and it's exhausting, isn't it? And so it's okay. As long as you enjoy today and cherish each moment as it comes...that's all we need to do."

  • it's painful for him to see his fans fighting so hard for him, so he wants to tell them that it's not needed, it's okay as long as they enjoy each moment together - it doesn't matter if the number becomes smaller, he'll always try his best and work hard to have more fun/enjoyable moments with the fans, all they need to do is enjoy themselves and they can communicate through music and concerts

A comment by Sergeant Kim Kyungryul (who was the sergeant on the team Junsu was in during his enlistment) on the video linked above:

i really wanted to share this because it was really heartbreaking to read/watch about this, i hope it's ok mods! ;; it's something we already know, but for him to openly address it like this and open up about his recent struggles, it was really hard to watch :( i'm glad he's continuing on though! on a bright note, in his latest vlive, jaejoong mentioned that he's filming for some show (not online one like photo people) and he's been spotted with comedian lee jinho and fti's jonghoon, so i'm hoping it's able to be broadcasted and it means things are somewhat looking up!!

Junsu sweetheart T.T

This is sad 😞

This is really awful. As problematic as JYJ have become over the years, I can't imagine that the struggles they had to go through to continue their careers and losing their support networks could have done anything good for their mental health. I don't know how I would've fared if I was in their situation.

im sooo :(((( its jusst crazy how the whole situations with dbsk/jyj went down. wish him nothing but the BEST! he's one of the most talented artists i've ever known!

He's always been nothing but a sweetheart and has always been such a positive radiant energy, seeing the years of toll that this has taken on him breaks my heart.
He is the most darling man and only deserves the world.

This is too much. The power SM has to block people is unreal. They're artists, they just want to perform! Let them be.

thank you for sharing T_T ♥

This is so sad :( I wish ex-SM artists would be able to promote as they wish. It's so unfair that they escaped from terrible work conditions to still be tied to their ex-company in another way :(

it's like an abusive ex still forcing you to pay alimony and maintenance

So sad. I didn't follow the DBSK/JYJ split but SM did them so fucking dirty, its insane how shitty they are to their former artists. No mercy.
sweetestbliss1 4th-Dec-2018 03:52 pm (UTC)
Yeah, and I can't imagine how much worse working conditions were for them back then. Compared to back then, idols now have it easier. I don't mean to negate what idols now have to go through, but idols back then had to really hussle and have paved the way for the new generations.

This is so sad. I hate that he's still dealing with this all these years later. SM is garbage smh.

My heart still aches for jyj because of the whole tv boycott business. All of it is wrong

It's always so sad whenever I come across article/ interview/ posting about JYJ (Jae and Junsu specifically) still being blocked by SM in Korea. I'm glad that at least he's doing well in Musical.

Thats why I'm so glad that Jae decided to focus in Japan cause at least in Japan, he's not blocked anymore and he gets broadcasting exposure. Although it's sad that even though he's a Korean Singer, he has to focus in japan and not Korea and younger generations don't really know who is he.

Fighting to both Junsu and Jae and fans.

It was my 2nd year as a kpop fan when the group separated. They were not my top favorite group but was also heart broken. What happened to them may be one of the reasons why I cannot fully enjoy or be a real fan of any SM group. I always see a powerful SM behind them so controlling/manipulating that sometimes its unfair. But that's just me.

They are entertainers, artists. They deserve to be able to perform and be seen in public broadcast specially since they are talented individuals. I wish them all the best!
sweetestbliss1 4th-Dec-2018 04:09 pm (UTC)
Yeah, and I imagine it's even harder for Junsu since he's like...a true artist? Does that make sense? Like out of all the DBKS members, he's the one who's most vocally talented, focused, and ambitious. Music is his life, really. So, for him to not be able to share his music with everyone, that must be really hard.
rockerista03 4th-Dec-2018 12:23 pm (UTC)
I'm so glad he's back aww this is making me emotional. He's always been such a sweetheart and was definitely one of my favourites along with Yunho and Changmin (his love-hate relationship with Changmin was my favourite tbh and Yunho always seemed to spoil him the most when they were all still together). Junsu was the one person in JYJ that I was not expecting to leave SM tbh but there were circumstances at play that only the 5 of them really know. JYJ has done problematic stuff, but my heart breaks the most for Junsu with the whole ban (my heart doesn't break for Yoochun at all lol he's always given me the creeps).

I hope SM stops being an ass and lifts the ban (or for the broadcast companies to grow some backbone and lift the ban themselves) soon and he gets to perform on music shows again. Dare I hope he meets Yunho and Changmin when it does? lol wishful thinking on my part ig but I'm still hoping.

i think it's impossible so far for broadcast companies to grow backbone, SM is too powerful - they have some of the biggest artists and if they pull back it could cause /so/ much damage, not only to music shows but also variety shows - there's so much more to think of than just airing something, a lot of jobs and payment is on the line and it's hard to go without SM's support, it's possible, but difficult
SM should just man up and get over themselves, it's so dumb anyway, this ban is lasting way too long - i mean, Jaejoong has finally been able to go on broadcast in Japan, which is already a HUGE step, so there's hope, Japan loves Jaejoong so hopefully slowly but surely there will be more space for the both of them
