i'm a 10 year kpop fan now, i'm turning 28 next week
my first faves were TVXQ, SNSD, SHINee, SuJu and T-ara
i got into them because i got into jpop (i'm a Johnny's fan by heart!)
idk, i like it because it's a good distraction, it's fun and entertaining
there are tons of things i don't like, the fandom back then was -imo- better back then, there are too many groups now and it's all hypersensitive these days, people can't fart and it's offending a whole country
i try not to get involved, i don't care that much, i'm just there for the music and the entertainment, some groups i've been with for a long time and that's what's important to me

Ahhh I remember you talking about rediscovering SHINee's songs again!

[my kpop story]
I discovered kpop in 2009 as well :D I had just became friends with a group of kpop fans, mostly TVXQ fans but there were also one BoA fan and two BIG BANG fans. Of course I got sucked into it lol but not immediatly. At first they showed me Mirotic by TVXQ (Gathyou was my nickname then so it was really fun for my friends to sing 'I got youuuuu under my skyskin" to me) but I didn't liked the song. I was into rock and still had a stupid ellitist view of pop or boy bands.
But another friend showed me BIG BANG (their more Western sound was easier to digest) and Nobody by Wonder Girls (just so much fun!), and those songs worked haha.

I still remember exactly where I was when I watched SHINee's Lucifer for the first time lol they also had a big impact on me!!! And Suju lmao I was so confused when I watched their MVs for the first time (now I follow 13 member girl groups so lol @ me)

I never stopped listening to kpop but in 2014/15 I slowed down for a while. My favourite group is SNSD but Jessica being left out made everything really toxic for a while. I got more involved again when it calmed down

I started with kdrama before kpop took over my life hahaha Back in 2006, I was on leave from work for a long time (I just gave birth) so I got some kdrama dvds. It was "Princess Hours" that got me fall in love with kdramas and I found out that Prince Yul (Kim Jeong Hoon) is a singer (he used to be part of a kpop duo) and so I watched all his videos in YT slightly getting me into kpop.

Then my friends introduced me to SS501 in 2008. They were so fun to watch! Then Boys Over Flowers happened. Since then, I got really hooked into SS501. I started collecting most of their albums, special release DVDs and photobooks. Yes, they were really expensive! As I watched variety shows and music shows where SS501 appears, I got introduced to other groups as well. When Kim Hyun Joong had a concert in my country in 2010 (Of course I went. Front and center!), Beast was with him. They were really charismatic and great performers and so I got interested on them as well. During that time, I was also following FTisland and UKiss (I got to see them perform live too!)

As SS501 parted ways with DSP (I loved SS501 and KARA since they were from DSP), I started to follow CUBE groups. A huge supporter of Beast, 4minute then BTOB and everybody else in CUBE. I like a lot of groups actually and there was even a time that I really became a big fan of EXO during Growl era (but that didn't last long, it also ended after Growl era hehe). I mostly am a fan of groups/artists not from the big 3 but that doesn't stop me from liking some of their releases every now and then. And I will forever admire DBSK, Xiumin, Seulgi and Kyuhyun.

That's my kpop journey. It's been a good 10 years from me. It helps that I have friends who are also kpop fans who likes some of the groups I like too so I can fangirl with them =)

I'm a much more recent fan. I'd vaguely heard some 2NE1 songs which I enjoyed, but I didn't actually get super into k-pop until someone posted EXID's Ah Yeah video on ohnotheydidnt. I loved it, discovered omonatheydidnt and started reading everything on here and discovering lots of different girlgroups.

For me I was watching random tv show clips and the body swap clip from Rainbow Romance was on (Super Junior's Kibum and Heechul starred in it) and the comments were talking about Heechul and so I looked up the group and there were comments of Heechul looking like Miyavi (who I was much more familiar with me) and then that led me to looking up their music so my first song was Super Junior's U and it was just catchy enough for me to look up other stuff. The rest was downhill from there

My sister showed me SHINee's Replay and 2PM's 10/10 when it came out but I wasn't very interested because I was too invested in my mandopop groups. I was 14. Again & Again caught my attention mostly because I thought Taec's rap sounded really funny and I'd mimic him for the lols. Then I realised that he was greasy/cheesy (in Idol Army and Wild Bunny), funny, fluent in English (sealed the deal tbh), and is basically a huge dork and unashamed of it, which I found charming. I haven't turned back since. I've watched almost everything that he's been in except for his movies and Who Are You (2013).

I was heavily invested in kpop from 2009 to 2012. I stopped because fandom was getting crazy (though I think things are more heated now and I steer clear of fandom in general now) and I had to focus on my A levels. Caught up on a ton of American TV shows and music, so I was only intermittently following news 2013-4. Came back a bit for 2PM's comebacks but was pretty out of the kpop/variety world until I got more Taec content. I was just very into Taec, but also tuned in to a lot of variety shows and I think I can recognise most of the idol title songs from 2009-2012 even the nugus. I still listen to a lot of second gen and ?third gen (2012-2015) groups. After my hiatus though, I reduced the amount of time I spent on kpop due to uni getting super busy and the sheer volume of content from every group. I couldn't keep up and decided only to closely follow a handful (2PM, SHINee, SNSD).

A fun memory of kpop was when I was 15, I went on a school trip with a group of friends to Christmas Island for 8-9days. They were super into Mirotic then and I was still kinda snobbish and refused to follow "big-name" groups, preferring to root for my "underdog group" 2PM. But as they started singing Mirotic on the bus, I caught the bug and all of us ended up learning the lyrics and a little of the dance during the trip. So now, whenever Mirotic plays, I think of those people and the fun we had.

While Taec remains my ultimate fave, Wonho is slowly creeping up the ranks because he's just such a cutie pie <3 I also think that girl groups are dominating my heart this generation (TWICE, WJSN, OMG) and I'm so here for it. For some odd reason, I haven't gotten into YG groups at all. I guess they're just not my style...

Next year is my 10th year since I started listening to kpop. How time flies.

Got into kpop when I was 13, in 2008!! It’s been so long oh maaan. I stopped following for a bit to focus on uni, but now I’m back! And completely lost amidst the new groups :p

I was watching jpop videos YouTube in 2009. In the sidebar they were suggesting videos, and I saw Kara’s ‘Honey’ thumbnail. I thought, hey this looks cute, let me check it out

...and I was introduced now my favorite sub genre 😊 next year I’ll be a kpop fan for 10 years. Thank you KARA!

In 2013-2014 those two years were just ok for kpop to me, I wasn’t enjoying songs as much as usual and I listened to more American music at the time (though I doubt that was much better lmao). 2014 was the year Ladies Code’s Eun B and RiSe died too :( I was crushed. so just not a good year for me....

Also certain friends were into country music and would go to country concerts, so I was into that for a bit. But I’m not friends with them anymore and I started noticing how fucking stale most of country music soooo that was short lived lol. 2015 was an AMAZING year for kpop and it revived my interest :)

I saw a post (maybe comment) about the English version of the boys by GG on ONTD and I really liked it and found other songs but it never really stuck. I kept seeing people talk about Big Bang and rv ice cream cake and liking it but again wasn’t fully invested into I saw that buzzfeed vid about the try guys reacting to kpop and I thought the vid was so amusing that I started listening to the groups featured in the vid and I fell through the rabbit hole lmao.

But even before that a couple of my mutuals on tumblr would post pics of bts and exo and I thought they were all models and I was like ?? I never heard of this modeling agency called exo is it some new street fashion company? I was super confused into I got into kpop and I learned who they actually were lmao.

I’ve only been into kpop for about 3 years so I’m still learning things but the of groups I started with were the typical combo of exo, shinee, got7, and bts but now I’m not really into them (except shinee I will always love them) and I moved on to groups that fit my taste more like exid, lovelyz, day6, wjsn, monsta x, stray kids, loona and nct dream (why do I love the youngsters so much TT___TT)

I used to be into j-pop and j-rock a lot. I am a big fan of Utada Hikaru so I'd always heard of Boa as they got compared a lot. But as I started to get out of j-pop a LJ user sent me Girls Generation japanese album and I got hooked. I kind of got out of j-pop and asian music around 2014. Then BTS came out with Dope and I got hooked again and started exploring more bands. And I eventually got sucked into loving all SM artist because I enjoy suffering. But I mostly listen to girl groups, women solo artist, and Exo right now.

and in case anyone wonder how I got sucked into j-pop and j-rock anime started it. a friend recommended me Gackt in High School. then I got into l'arc en ciel and hyde mesmerized me. In college I heard Utada's Automatic and I've loved her since then. Got into J-rock then with Miyavi, then Maximum the Hormone, then Alice Nine, then tons more. Currently still loving Utada forever and a lot of other girls, and Fear and loathing in las vegas ( I love Minami because goths stick with goths).

Mine is rly not interesting lol, Sorry Sorry went viral and I had a few korean friends in college who were really into kpop so I got into it like that. But then I gave up, and only started caring again when jonghyun died. I never paid too much attention to him in shinee whatsoever tbh, so i am surprised how weirdly i felt affected by his passing, but that event made me go back and see what i had missed with the 2nd gen groups and then I got recs here for 3rd gen groups and went back down the rabbit hole lol. I am older now than god so I am not super invested in fandom, just here for the visual and bops

my friends got super into exo back in 2013/2014 and hassled me for months to get into them until i finally gave in. i probably would have gotten into them sooner if my friends hadn't shown me the wolf mv so early on (idk what they were thinking tbh). i only stanned them for a few months though because between kris and luhan leaving and the other members constantly doing offensive shit (idk if they've gotten better but it was BAD back then) it just got to be too much and so i moved on to other groups. i still like exo's music for the most part, though.

I think a lot of older kpop fans are similar in that there was a period where they've stopped or slowed down in their listening of kpop songs. and then came back after a while and still listening to it.

for mine, I got into kpop in 2010. before that I had heard about it, but did not actively seek out to listen unless it was huge songs (like Nobody). I got sucked into it because I was randomly scrolling through SNSD music videos, and wow they're so pretty and their songs seem great (the choreography, the togetherness). it just hooked me in. and adding to the fact that I was about to begin serving national obligations, these videos were the few things that kept me going I guess? and I also managed to get the people around me into kpop during that period and we would all gather and watch together. I slowly got out of kpop in 2013/2014 because of uni and busy lives, and it wasn't till end 2015 that I got back in and now I'm in it again!

funny story though, before I got into kpop, I had chanced upon this video of SNSD at a variety show talking about mothers (it was during genie period I believe), and I had no idea who they were before. but the discussion about mothers just made me tear up, and probably a year later, I got hooked into them unknowingly. and even during my break from kpop, I was watching a clip of Roommate where they had pranked Jackson into believing his parents were coming and then his parents came, that also got me tearing up. and little did I know few months later, I would be sucked into being a fan of Got7 too. I guess the point of these 2 stories is that family makes me tear up, and I had that emotional connection to the groups I liked before paying more attention to them?
