"Gotta Go" [Relay Dance]

K-Pop Star Chungha Kicks Off 2019 With a Not-So-Cinderella Story

The ball only just dropped in Times Square, but Chungha's already gotta go.

The 22-year-old I.O.I. girl group member-turned-soloist, who took us on a "Roller Coaster" ride at the top of 2018 and helped to make our summer brighter and bluer with her Blooming Blue mini-album over the summer, is at it again for the very start of 2019. And she's kicking things off with a bang – perhaps quite literally.

From the darker, more seductive sound of the song's production to the makeup and styling of the campaign visuals and accompanying choreography-filled music video, "Gotta Go" is the sound of a newer, more "mature" Chungha as she explained in a chat with PAPER just ahead of the single's post-New Year's Day release.

The infectious offering, dominated by a flute melody (early 2019 pop trend alert?), finds the singer reluctantly parting ways with a boy as the clock strikes midnight, just as things are getting hot and heavy. Despite her midnight departure, as she herself stresses, this is no Cinderella story.

New year, new Chungha.

You just performed a medley during the 2018 KBS Song Festival. I loved the new version of "Love U," as well as the decision to perform "Do It." How was the overall experience of preparing and performing that stage?
Oh, it was good! I actually promised my fans that I would do a "Do It" stage this year, so I got to keep the promise. I had a different collaboration through YouTube, a "Do It" duet with Nike, but I told my fans that I would do a different stage with that. That version of "I Love You" was kind of a more…mature version. [Laughs]

It was!
Yeah, so I had fun with that. And then I moved onto "Rollercoaster," and that was good.

Were there any favorite stages from other performers that night?
I loved every stage! I enjoyed it for the whole time. I felt so honored to be there, actually, especially Sunmi and Seulgi and Daehwi's "Heroine" collaboration.

I was going to say – I saw your selfie with Sunmi.
Yeah! We had such a good time.

Their collaboration stage was really cool.
I really loved that. I loved everyone's stage. It was awesome.

The last time we spoke, we discussed how you like working both as a solo artist and in a group. Later on in 2018, you worked on a superstar collaboration — "Wow Thing" — for SM's Station. It was amazing! What was that experience like?
I was very honored to be a part of that project. I learned a lot, and my fans loved it. All of the listeners did. It was an honor to work with musicians that I love. I'm looking forward to doing more, different collaborations in 2019.

Yeah, I was going to ask: are there any more girl group plans in the future lined up? I'm sure you're asked that by everyone.
Not yet...but I'm also looking forward to it! So, if I have a chance, I would love to participate.

Let's get onto the new stuff. What is the meaning of this song and why was it selected as the new sound to kick off the year?
It's very new for me and my fans. It's more mature, and a new side of me is going to be visualized when it's released. I'm very scared and excited at the same time. You know, 2019 is all new. It's an all new year, so I guess it's a great start to start off with "Gotta Go."

What should we expect from this comeback, visually and musically speaking?
No glitter this time. [Laughs] I had a lot of love for putting glitter on my eyes. No glitter this time – I got darker and more matte, I guess. That's the part where I get so excited! It's all new. I've never done such a dark lipstick on me.

And how would you describe the sound?
It has a flute sound in it, in the hook. It's very catchy. It's a more mature vibe, which I've never done or shown before. Everything is really new. It's less tropical – it goes with the season. No summer vibes this time.

Can you tell us about the preparation leading up to this comeback?
Every song and promotion is always challenging. But then, it's unique. In the video, I have a lot of parts that I dance by myself without my dancers. I was really nervous about that part.

You shouldn't be – you're an amazing dancer!
Thank you! I hope my fans like it.

How was the recording process?
It was hard. It was really high this time. I think my voice has matured, as the vibe is more mature. I learned a lot. But now I'm ready to go on stage and do it. You'll see more new, mature parts of Chungha on stage.

Could you talk about the meaning of the song?
It's very straightforward. [Laughs] A lot of people think it's a Cinderella story, but it's actually not. It's like "gotta go, gotta go, it's already midnight," but…yeah. I thought it would be Cinderella, but it's really not. It's very mature.

I like that.
You like it? I'm glad!

Yes, and the year is just beginning! Do you have any resolutions? What is one new thing you'd like to accomplish you've never done before?
I'm starting off immediately with "Gotta Go." I wish to have more one-to-one fan time. I'm preparing for a fan meeting this time, and maybe I can do a full album for the next time.

Is there anything new you'd like to accomplish?
I would love to do a concert. I haven't done it yet, and that's kind of on my wish list. I don't know if it'll be 2019 officially, but I'm always getting ready for my concert. Maybe if me and my staff are ready, we can kick it off in 2019.

That would be really exciting.
You should come!

That's my resolution.
I'm gonna record this – you should come! [Laughs]

Finally, what would the perfect 2019 look like for Chungha?
It's pretty much the same: more music, more fan time and, if there's a chance, a concert. That would be perfect. Even if I don't have one, it'll still be fun because "Gotta Go" is already really, really new and it's a good start for 2019. I'm very excited for 2019!

Chung Ha Talks Starting Off 2019 with 'Gotta Go' & Goals for the New Year

Back in 2016, K-pop soloist Chung Ha got her start as a member of I.O.I, a temporary girl group formed through the television show Produce 101. Since then, she’s become one of South Korea’s most promising pop goddesses. 2018 saw her top charts with singles like “Roller Coaster” and “Love U” while exploring her sonic style, which leans heavily into tropical house, through multiple collaborations. At the start of 2019, she’s ready to take the world on and change how she’s been doing things, which is why she started the new year off with the release of “Gotta Go (Already Midnight)” today (Jan. 2).

A summer vibe me was there during 2018, and sparkly Chung Ha was there, but this time it’s very different. I don’t have all that glitter,” Chung Ha tells Billboard over the phone ahead of the single’s release. “This is more of my personal style, I guess. I wanted to go very dark. There’s a very different side of me so I’m excited to show that to fans.”

“Gotta Go” certainly moves Chung Ha into a more sultry place than her past singles with its vibrant flute sounds and squelching synths acting as a backdrop to her rich vocals. It’s paired with a music video that is less girlish than her prior ones, replacing the aforementioned sparkles and glitter (though not entirely) with mature, bolder looks, like power shoulders and smokey eye and lip hues. Choreography-wise, things similarly shift away from the past, with the emphasis being on theatrical elements like hand moves emulating a clock striking midnight and intense floorwork.

For Chung Ha, the performance and style elements play as big of a role for her in shaping her artistry as her music does. “The visual part is very important to me because it kind of stands out with my music. As the music changes, the looks change so that goes a long way.

Starting off 2019 strong with a directional shift makes Chung Ha a bit nervous the singer admits, but is also something she’s immensely “comfortable” with and hopes her audience will grow used to. “It was kind of like I was waiting for this song to come along,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to do one of these concepts, and the song came and I listened to it and it was all, ‘Oh, this is it! This is the best thing I’ve ever heard.’ I was ready to go.”

Though “Gotta Go” shows something new of Chung Ha, it also marks her return to collaborating with Black Eyed Pilseung and Jeon Goon, the team behind last year’s hit “Roller Coaster.”

As she moves forward in her career, and into 2019, Chung Ha hopes that “Gotta Go” will start a new era of her trying out different things. Since being in I.O.I, where she considered herself a “half-rapper, mostly dancer,” she’s steadily become known for her dynamic vocal delivery just as much as her captivating performances. Last year she collaborated with Red Velvet's Seulgi, (G)I-dle's Soyeon, and GFRIEND's SinB on the girl crush anthem "Wow Thing,” and ended with “Whatcha Doin’” with Super Junior’s Yesung. Both experiences showed her something new about her skills as a singer. “I found a very new voice from me, and fans say they heard a very different style from the other sounds that I’ve sung,” she says. “I never had a bright, kind of R&B style in my album, so maybe that was different for Super Junior Yesung’s collaboration. And then with ‘Wow Thing,’ I had a little stronger voice in it cause I had a lot of high notes. I never thought that I would go high when I’m in a group.”

Chung Ha says that the next new thing she wants to try out is a romantic ballad, and names Paul Kim, a Korean-American singer popular in South Korea who recently released "Me After You," as someone she’d like to collaborate with. “I’m not a ballad singer but I really want to show more of a ballad side of Chung Ha in 2019. I guess if he’s okay with it, I’m so ready,” she says with a laugh.

And though she’s starting off with a sole track in “Gotta Go,” Chung Ha also says that fans may have something more to look forward to in the form of an upcoming album later in 2019.
