Baekhyun responds to twitter post offering to sell personal information about EXO members

(trans.) “Is it okay to sell other people’s information like this?”

Many accounts on Twitter and other social media sites offer to sell the dorm addresses, car numbers, ID photos, and photographs of past girlfriends of idols. To one such post that stated, “I am selling information about EXO,” which included information about their addresses and favorite bars/restaurants, Baekhyun used his personal Twitter account to directly reply.

On January 5, he wrote simply, “Is it okay to sell other people’s information like this?” As Baekhyun’s reply gained attention, the original post was deleted.

On the CBS radio show “Kim Hyun Jung’s News Show,” cultural critic Kim Sung Soo said that a legal response from the agency to these kinds of information peddlers might be difficult.

“If you catch the seller, then the buyers also become criminal,” he said. “However, those buyers are considered to be ‘fans.’ If you make too strong of a legal response, it could have effects beyond what the agency wants. The promotion period for an idol is quite short. If the contract is seven years, then the agency invests for four years and reaps the rewards for three. To the agency, this isn’t worth the risk.”

The critic continued, “It was originally the agencies who would encourage the leak of information such as, ‘Certain idols will be at this concert or this broadcast company.’ One might say that the first methods by which fandoms became victim to criminals were taught by the agencies themselves.”

However, some kind of response appears necessary as the selling of personal information can lead to emotional and material damage.

So tl;dr, we're still categorizing dangerous creeps as "fans."
Yuck. Miss me with that BS.

I find the response from the cultural critic really good, he hits the nail on the head on all the issues and lowkey criticizes the companies for encouraging this behavior (with SM being the biggest culprit).

Oh I think the critic summarized it wonderfully, I just hate that he's right about companies creating sasaengs.

so true, it's a fucked-up marketing strategy by the companies that endangers their artists' mental and physical health as well as the people around them. And when it's totally out of control, the artists are on their own because the company is too money-obsessed.

I hate that the companies made it this way. I get that the idols are essentially treated as inventory/products to be sold, but STILL. It's ridiculous! These are HUMANS. Share professional information such as where they are performing, not personal information.
pepsi_twist9 8th-Jan-2019 04:43 pm (UTC)
Yup. I get so stressed when idols go to airports

I mean sasaengs have being selling idols {and their relatives} infomation for years, truly seem like nobody cares

someone should take care of those stalkers, just last week i saw kyuhyun sister talking about sasengs that harass her entire family for years ... she says they report many times to police but they dont do anything

at least idols have bodyguards and security team but who can protect their families, stalkers have no limits
i feel really bad because she's pregnant with twins and this pshycos wish death to her and her babies

she ended up deleting everything just like sasaengs ordered

exo sasaengs are insane tbh

baekhyun said they keep finding the members numbers and send them messages telling them how ugly they look today and that they dont look good in this and that outfits, telling them what they should they do in public. baekhyun said the he and the members are becoming less confident day by day.

they out here attacking their self-esteem. at this point i believe they are pure anti fans disguising themselves as fans.

I thought sasaengs still had some fucked up notion of love that made them act crazy to get attention from the idols they stalk, but your comment doesn't sound like that at all? They actually hate the idols?? I don't understand what motivates these people to act like this.
baekpedaling 8th-Jan-2019 10:00 pm (UTC)
Sasaengs do things like this too. They want attention from the idols, even if it's negative. They love it when idols broadcast and mention that someone keeps calling their phones.

I honestly have no words.
lydzi 8th-Jan-2019 06:18 pm (UTC)
HOW THEY DO THAT??? Do they work for phone companies or what? oO

baekhyun has said plenty of times before how much he hates sasaengs yet SM still doesn't actively protect their artists and sue the shit outta them because they only care about money (like stated in the article above)

I appreciate that Baek talks about this fairly regularly, even after he gets blow back.

obvious is obvious, but change your f*cking business model, companies, so that employees aren't knowingly put in danger. They need some serious criminal negligence suits over there.

Baekhyun fighting that good Sasaeng fight from the start tbh.
And he received backlash previously but I fully support him in this.

I support Baekhyun fully! I was searching Chanyeol pictures one day and all this info came up and it freaked me out. I reported it to Twitter and it got removed but wtf. Why do these people have no lives but to stalk/harass?
