Damn, their rise is insane. It almost scares, me, lmao. I can't imagine what it feels like to be them. I don't really personally care either way as I'm not really a fan, but I think they deserve it, and I do enjoy reading the happiness of BTS fans and like, feeding on that, lmao. Gimme all your happiness so I can live vicariously tho it. :x

They just need one hit song in the west and they could get a Diamond record easily. They'd become the most global boy band to ever exist if they aren't already

Out of curiosity I just looked up Backstreet Boys sales and they have an album that's sold 30 million and one that sold 24 million worldwide...the 90s were truly a different time lol. If my sources are correct 1D never even reached 5 million.

an album that's sold 30 million and one that sold 24 million worldwide

I would like to say that I contributed a piece in that 30 million lmao (if I'm correct in assuming that it's Millenium because I distinctly remember seeing the news/announcement of them hitting 30 million on MTV's TRL yes, I'm old-ish)
lil_poisonfrog 12th-Apr-2019 06:15 am (UTC)
Do you remember when that was? I assumed they hit it like a decade later or something but if it wasn't long after the album came out that's even more impressive.

We can be old together bc I def contributed to Spice Girls' 23 mil sales of their first album lol. I think I still have the cassette

If I remember correctly, it was around 2005 or 2006 but the album was released in '99, I think. I would also like to correct myself because they appeared on TRL on the week of their release lol but yeah, they sold 1M copies on the first week release.

lol I also contributed to Spice Girls tbh. *NSYNC and Britney Spears too. The 90s were truly amazing when it came to album sales.

That's still insane though...an American artist achieving that today is unthinkable.

Yeah like...the way the US music industry absolutely failed to adapt to digital downloads and streaming in that regard is astonishing. One of K-pop's greatest strengths as a genre imo is how it makes so much money from physical sales and merch, without all the copyright shenanigans of the J-pop industry. If K-pop gets even more popular in the US I can see it revitalizing album sales.

I contributed to those sales too lololol. Millenium remains a classic, still don’t get why Black and Blue got more hype, though The Call is exceptionally good despite the cringe lyrics.
rockerista03 12th-Apr-2019 06:30 am (UTC)
Black and Blue getting more hype still has me ???? tbh like nah there's no way More Than That is better than I Want It That Way or Larger Than Life lmao
jyusou 12th-Apr-2019 06:48 am (UTC)
I Want It That Way and Larger Than Life were Those Bitches, yes! Also Don’t Want You Back was a bop, the literal first song ever in my life I listened over and over on repeat until my CD player REFUSED to let me replay it, let me tell you!!

ETA: Also, Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely, another great song!

Super big albums use to sell 30mill plus. Check MJ Thriller album
lil_poisonfrog 12th-Apr-2019 07:50 am (UTC)
Lol I know. I used BSB bc they're also a boy band

The preorders this time blows my mind. The rise is straight-up meteoric, like...phew.

Anyway, I am anticipating this, and I’m hogging space at the cinema with my phone plugged and charging right now waiting for this to drop bc I’m too lazy to walk around and my plans to see Hellboy in theatres is thwarted due to the bad reviews and the r rating. Sighghgh.

Based on the song descriptions out so far, I am curious about Dionysus the most....the hip hop track, of course.

I wanna know how reliable Bloomberg is with that number though...are they like Forbes where they base net worth on self reported figures aka total bullshit?

That said I still think it's crazy BTS re-signed for 7 years...which won't even start until their current contracts are up and prob doesn't include their time in the military. I hope to god they had lawyers to look things over and got a good deal.

You really realise how big they're getting when a cd store in a western country is opening the store at 9pm so fans can buy the album as soon as they're allowed to...

Legends.

It's truly crazy, while CD sales everywhere are going back because of downloads and streaming, K-Pop acts manage to doubel and tripple their sales with every comeback.
