BTS's Map of The Soul: Persona Global Press Conference

French Artist Issues Statement About Claims Of BTS Being Inspired By His Work; Says He Considers It “A Tribute” Not “Plagiarism”

On April 18, French artist Bernard Faucon released a statement clarifying his claims of BTS being inspired by his work.
His statement is as follows:

"I discovered BTS album ‘The Most Beautiful Moment of Life: Young Forever’ long after it was published, and I immediately felt a common inspiration with my past series of photographs: ‘Summer Camp.’

Since a long time, my photographs using mannequins, my ‘Love chambers’ or my ‘Scriptures’ inspire stage directors, designers, writers, and other artists all around the wor[l]d.

Inspiration and interpretation have always been at the center of creation and art. I suppose that inspiring various domains of art and culture is inherent to every profound and sensitive artwork.

As I have always said, I consider this probable inspiration from my work as a tribute, and certainly not as plagiarism or copyright infringement.
I love BTS, this album is beautiful, I feel honored to know that 40 years later, my photographs still inspire young artists of today."

In February, it was reported that Bernard Faucon’s agency had asked Big Hit Entertainment on his behalf for an apology and compensation over suspicions of copyright infringement by BTS’s album artwork for “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever” and their music video for “Blood Sweat & Tears.” Images shared in the media compared BTS’s works with his own.
Bernard Faucon has also stated on his website:

"An article released Monday 25.02 in the Korean newspaper Hankyore incorrectly stated that I was accusing the K-Pop band BTS of plagiarism. I discovered BTS album “The Most Beautiful Moment of Life: Young Forever” long after it was published, and I felt a common inspiration with my past series of photographs ‘Summer Camp.’

In an interview with a journalist from Hankyore about my current exhibition in Seoul, I answered about this feeling and made absolutely clear that I was considering a possible inspiration from my work as a tribute, and certainly not as plagiarism or copyright infringement.

I love BTS, this album is beautiful, I feel honored to know that 40 years later, my photographs still inspire other artists. Love."

While it was reported in February that Bernard Faucon planned to hold a press conference in April in Korea to announce his position on the issue, his agency explained that he released a statement instead because he is preparing for a gallery opening in China on April 27.

In February, Big Hit Entertainment had responded by stating that the photos and clips from BTS’s album were not similar to Faucon’s works, and that because the parts that Faucon had claimed were similar were commonly used in filming, they were not subject to legal protection. At a press conference for BTS’s new mini album “Map of the Soul: Persona” on April 17, BTS was asked about the plagiarism accusations and Suga replied, “The legal team at our agency is dealing with the plagiarism issue. We have the same position as the agency.”

We've finally got a full version of their press conference with subtitles (Big Hit shared only the first part through BangtanTV). In the second part of the press conference BTS members answer the questions about the reason for choosing Boy With Luv for the title track, the next BTS, plagiarism controversy, the meaning of hip hop, their future mixtapes, plans to release an English album, collaborations with foreign artists, positive influence and others.

Seriously, K-media?

Anyway. I love how YG responds. Makes me wonder how articulate he would have been in English, how high his IQ would have been etc if he had been raised in a privileged environment like NJ was

Why are ARMY so thin-skinned though?
Like its a press conference, obviously during the Q&A someone is going to ask an unsavoury question. BTS is professional about it, as they should be. ARMY really need to stop acting as if everyone should be bowing at BTS's feet. Its getting ridiculous. Like I know all fan-bases can be annoying but enough.

It was a stupid accusation anyway and no one took it seriously. Like c'mon already.

I think it's just that a lot of BTS' fans are very young and then it just snow balls on sns. Though tbh, in general I wish fans had more self-awareness, like don't you realize by your actions you are being an embarrassment to the people you love so much? :/

yeah the protective fans are so annoying. and they talked about how all korean media doesn't care about them and should be bowing at their feet basically and how terrible the questions were like the western media doesn't give terrible question to bts sometimes too. western fans need to stop being xenophobic. they also need to learn that the media is ruthless everywhere and bts are grown men

Aw, that was cute how Yoongi choose to talk about Halsey. xD Clearly he wanted to and seemed happy. Made me feel happy, lol.

It's nice for them they have 7 members so don't have to speak too much per person during a press con (unless it's RM during an english interview, lol), but it sucks that you get so little of each too, lol. I want more Kookie. xD

I had to google what 'epigyny' was, and now I'm like??? Lmao, was it's use some sort of idiom in Korean? xD Or just a mistrans in the subs...

i think they meant the word "symbiosis" because they talked about a mutually beneficial relationship between army and bts but yeah that was weird. i don't know what it is or if it was a mistranslation

i love that that reporter asked if they actually read the map of the soul book and what its influence is on the album. i should've figured they wouldn't read the whole book. they probably don't even have time to read a whole book unfortunately. still the lyrics of the album seem to match the themes of the book so i guess those youtube videos and blogs were enough. plus of course they get help from their team and songwriters outside of the company too. it's good to hear all of them talk too. in the us they rarely get a translator, so rm has to do all the talking.
