Oh My Girl "The Fifth Season" MV

pinklunacy 8th-May-2019 09:28 am (UTC)

The MV is super pretty and a whole fantasy as usual but i have mixed feelings about the song. The second part of the chorus is really good but the verses fall flat for me and the final build up, while it’s nice, comes a little late.

Overall I do like it and the chorus is stuck in my head already, but it’s not an instant favorite like remember me, windy day or closer.

Binnie is so pretty it hurts.

This is like... a mix of a WJSN and OMG. I LOVE the song, but ngl the visuals with all the pastel pinks and blues is very reminiscent of WJSN.

i'm actually kind of torn LOL i wish they went with a more earthy nature route than this magical space nature.
xoxkenzxox 8th-May-2019 12:35 pm (UTC)
I was going to say this visually looks like WJSN.
lil_poisonfrog 8th-May-2019 03:00 pm (UTC)
WJSN is a good comparison. The song also reminded me of Gfriend

I like spacey/celestial aesthetics in general but it's starting to feel like an overdone concept for girl groups

Ooh, I really like it!

Something about this sounds more mature that their previous releases so that’s nice to see progression. Plus it sounds like it belongs in an anime, and I’m super biased - I love that shit lmaooo. Idk if it’s an instant love but I’m really enjoying it and I’m sure it’ll be a favorite in no time. It’s an improvement over Remember Me, which took me literal months to get into.

While I love the idea of the MV, I wish the fantasy scenes had more meaning. It’s pretty but still felt pretty hollow. The girls look amazing though!

AAAAAHHHHHHHH

calms down. Ok, gotta be objective about this.

The good:
- the song is so pretty! It doesn't have the immediate impact as say, remember me or windy day, but its more like secret garden which i like more with each listen. I predict i'll find myself singing the la la la lalalala part soon.
- they're showcasing yooa's and binnie's voices more! YASSS.
- puberty has chosen its favorite child and her name is arin. My god. She has grown overnight and is the prettiest thing ever. If she practices her facial expressions more I see her landing acting gigs in the future.
- aesthetics are A+, as usual.

The not-so-good:
- the MV felt disjointed. like I was watching 3 different MVs? if you told me some of those scenes were b-cuts from red velvet's red flavor and wjsn's secret or i wish i would've believed you.
Whoever directed windy day should come back. That had a lot of scenes too but they all felt united into one epic storyline.
- its so frustrating coz some of the scenes could've been fixed with just a bit of editing.
Like Mimi's scenes! They could've been so pretty but the flashing colored lights in the background were too distracting.
- if you can't do CG well, skip it. See comments about disjointed and distracting.
- NOT ENOUGH BALLET. If I can have only one gripe, this would be it. It feels like DIA's Mr Potter and Can't Stop where they have this amazing concept but lacked in the follow through.

As much as I whined though, this is another solid track to add to OMG's discography. Hopefully it does well!

So i just saw their performance from their showcase and need a space to vent so...

- choreo reminds me of closer at first, then windy day in the middle. I foresee other ggs covering the prechorus to chorus dance for variety shows.
- the ballet part really went amiss 😢 if you focus on yooa then you get the ballet inspiration behind some of the moves, but on the other girls... I'm sorry.
- speaking of which, they should really post yooa versions of their choreo like momo does for twice.
lizanka23 8th-May-2019 06:38 pm (UTC)
yes, i agree about the ballet! it would have been cool if they did a storyline at a ballet school with the girls as ballet students kind of like after school's shampoo mv. i'm sure it would've been more cohesive too instead of what we actually got

I really like this, I think the post-chorus is a little out of place with the rest of the song but not enough to be song-ruining and it builds well into the bridge. I like how it's a bit more high-energy than their other closer/secret-garden style releases.

The MV is a bit jumbled, like there are 3 different aesthetics in it (fantasy -> fridge scene -> mimi's scene) and they don't quite fit. I think the journey across the ice thing could have been better emphasised, etc.

I barely recognise Arin to be honest. Talk about puberty.

Seunghee is such a star.

The false start chorus with Yooa and Bonnie had me hooked and then the real thing came with Hyunung and I was sold. I like the song and I love the chorus but I think that surprise jumonin the chorus might be too big personally. The song starts very Oh My Girl and then the chorus happens and it’s like...I want more of that as well.

As for the video: pick a theme and stick with it please. They’ve been doing this style of video for awhile now (escaping into your fantasy with very little connection between each girl’s story) and after a bit it’s just two parts boring and part excessive

Overall I like the song

Man they really don't know what to do with mimi, do they? :\
Girl barely gets any screentime when here scenes couldve been really pretty, she gets 2 lines and thats it.
Her raps in Remember Me really had me thinking that they finally figured out how to use her
myungung 8th-May-2019 01:42 pm (UTC)
I liked the part where Mimi and Hyojung were interspersed, but the 2nd time it felt forced already. They should have given her half a verse rap for the 2nd time instead
lizanka23 8th-May-2019 06:39 pm (UTC)
yes! she was one of the highlights of remember me. hopefully she has more parts on the b-sides
myungung 8th-May-2019 01:41 pm (UTC)
I loved the first verse, all the way to Binnie’s prechorus, and the chorus just fell flat. Did not like the La La La part, perhaps cos it felt too close to WJSN song.

Song feels like a WJSN x Dreamcatcher hybrid that tries to follow Remember Me format.

MV feels pretty Colouring Book style to me. Could be better, especially when Secret Garden and Remember Me had better MVs!

their title tracks are usually hit or miss w/ me, but i really enjoyed this one.
benihime99 8th-May-2019 02:55 pm (UTC)
Gives me lovelyz vibes
It's pretty and soft, a bit jpopish

The makeup on some of them though... fire the MUA, I should not be able to see 6 shades difference between their face and neck

kyulkyung 8th-May-2019 03:00 pm (UTC)
their best release since windy day
lil_poisonfrog 8th-May-2019 03:04 pm (UTC)
I don't really like this sort of song from them but the public/their fans seem to like it so I get why they do it. But it ends up feeling like a generic J-pop/anime ost-like track for me. I didn't find the visuals anything to write home about either...they looked pretty ofc that's a given. Ia with ppl saying they really don't know what to do with Mimi. For a song like this maybe it's better to just make her sing like they did for Windy Day

That video was gorgeous. Everyone looks gorgeous and I'm in love with so many outfits, especially the blue dancing dresses.
Some scenes were litterally breath-taking - like Binnie's or Arin's, I loved the fantasy landscapes, it reminded me of WJSN's style, as well as Remember Me and Secret Garden. But some scenes felt disjoncted, Mimi's set clashed so much with the theme, and Seunghee's and Hyojung's sets look like they could belong in another video? They're very obviously dance and/or photoshoot sets re-purpused for the video but it didn't feel as natural as Yooa's set for example (which as more tied with the dreamy aesthetics). But I'm nitpicking lol

I enjoyed the song itself, but I think it lacks some impact? I loved the build-up from Binnie/Yooa to the chorus with Hyojung/Seunghee, but the verses were too minimalist and faded in the background a bit. But I get why they picked it as a title track, it's a good mix of Remember Me's structure with Secret Garden's dreamy sound. I can see this growing on me a lot.

Mimi was paid dust, she deserved better lines and screentime :(
aleksu7 8th-May-2019 03:38 pm (UTC)
Mmm not for me this time. Actually Windy day was the last song I really really like of them... :(
But wtf Arin, her change is as shocking as Taemin change back in the day...
lizanka23 8th-May-2019 06:50 pm (UTC)
wow this is the first time that it didn't feel like an OMG release to me at all. usually i think their style and music is pretty unique even if i don't like the song but this time the music video was very WSJN while the song and choreo was gfriend. i don't know if there was a change in their creative team or something happened...

also again disappointing not to see any of the ballet themes used from the teasers, and i feel like this MV was a step back. the Remember Me mv aesthetically seemed more mature and showed off the fact that they're all in the their 20's but this time it seemed more immature and child-like :/

the song was pleasant though and i feel like it could grow on me and there were some pretty scenes. i hope they'll release new music more often in the future

beautifully shot! i LOVE their dark blue dresses. they all look gorgeous and yooa looks stunning as per usual. even arin looks so lovely and mature :')

as for the song - not bad! the weird modulation in the chorus is a bit jarring but it's tolerable. i can already hear this being sung in japanese lol
