Jeon Somi talks about solo debut amid YG controversies + IOI's reported reunion

The singer held a showcase for the release of her first solo single “Birthday” today.

She shared her thoughts on her debut saying “I’m greeting the public in three years. I’m very nervous.”

Jeon Somi also talked about her new agency and said, “I moved from JYP Entertainment to YG The Black Label. The style for songs and work is different.”

When asked about the various controversies surrounding YG Entertainment, Jeon Somi replied, “I wasn’t swayed and worked hard to prepare in my own way.”

Teddy, head of The Black Label, created “Birthday” with Jeon Somi participating in composing. Jeon Somi also created self-composed track “Outta My Head” for her solo debut album.

Jeon Somi explained, “‘Birthday’ is the day of birth. It also has the meaning as the day I was reborn as a solo singer. ‘Outta My Head’ is my self-composed song. I didn’t have any idea of writing lyrics and composing, but my company producers helped me. I experienced the pain of creating for the first time.”

Following news of I.O.I reportedly reuniting with nine members, Jeon Somi was asked about it during her showcase. She answered, “I think nothing definite has been decided yet. I also don’t know anything for certain.”

Jeon Somi’s solo debut single will be released today at 6 p.m. KST.

"i care about my bag more than I care about what they're doing" lmao girl just cuz they feed you a line doesn't mean you have to deliver it.

She shouldn't be faulted for her answer though. That's actually the perfect answer to give. She probably has been focusing all her energy on her debut as she should (so it's not a lie) and none of the YG mess is her fault. She doesn't owe anyone a more comprehensive answer.

I'm surprised that question/topic wasn't blacklisted though cuz it was predictable that she'd be asked about it, yet she shouldn't have to answer for the shitty behaviour of men at her agency.

I hope no one gives an 18 year-old teen girl (who is just solo-debuting and trying to establish herself) any shit for how she responds to to questions about grown-ass men who happen to be her (ex)-sunbaenims or agency boss.

they didn't blacklist the question because they needed her to answer it with their pr approved narrative. they already botched the debut showcase by having 0 performances so they had to give the press something.

my issue with the statement isn't with Somi herself, she's doing her job, it's with what the YG/Black Label's strategy is in their current position (and the continuation to use women as a sheild/distraction)

Ya that's true, there's something kinda fucked up that the only thing that seems to get women out of YG's basement is when they need to distract from their problematic men. They should've put more emphasis on their female talent for years but it's only happening while these girls have to promote under a cloud.

Still, I want Somi to get those $$$$!
