Police start investigating possible voting manipulation on Produce X 101 and more news!

What happened so far: posted here
- After Mnet first denied voting manipulation (suspicions rose up because of identical gaps between trainees' votes), fans started to gather and wanted to take legal action against the show.
- Mnet then admitted that there was an error in calculating the votes but ensured that it did not affect the final ranking.

- With the continued backlash, Mnet then released a new statement, saying that they did an internal investigation but couldn't verify the facts, so they would request for a 3rd party to investigate.

"First of all, we deeply apologize for causing controversy regarding the vote results and announcement for the “Produce X 101” live show.

Mnet carried out an internal investigation following the controversy, but the judgment was made that there may be limitations in verifying the facts. As a result, we have submitted a request for investigation to an investigative agency with public credibility. Mnet will actively cooperate with the investigation to clearly reveal the facts, and we will take responsibility if necessary."

- After that, it was reported that according to several sources in the entertainment industry, a high-level Mnet staff member spoke with the companies of the 9 eliminated trainees and offered them to be included in the X1 lineup if they were not satisfied with voting results.
- Furthermore Mnet allegedly said that they would also support if BY9 made their debut.
- According to the reports, all agencies turned down the suggestion.

> “If we were to accept this offer, it would make it seem like we acknowledge that there was manipulation of the votes and also that we tolerate that, and so we turned it down.”
> “This is a plan that would hurt not only the eliminated trainees but also the trainees who were decided to debut with X1.”
> “This would disaffirm the reliability of the final episode.”

- Mnet confirmed a meeting happened, but that the reports were exaggerated.
“We met with agency representatives today to explain that we will be requesting a formal investigation regarding the vote manipulation controversy. At the meeting, we heard their opinions on how it should be dealt with if the investigation finds that there was an unexpected victim.”
“We asked for the agencies’ opinions about what they wanted if an unexpected victim were to be found — whether they would want them to be added to X1 or if they wanted them to debut in another group.”
“Each of the agencies had different opinions. The most important thing is that the trainees and agency staff are not hurt.”

- Today, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s cyber investigation team started an internal investigation into Produce X 101, after they have received such a request from Mnet itself.

If I was one of those eliminated trainees, I would grab this opportunity, backlash be damned. A great paycheck for 5 years and that much exposure? Also, i think fans would get over it quickly bc X1 haven't started promotions yet and they all know them from the show. What do you think of the recent developments?

I agree with you OP, I'll go for that popularity.
Finally there's an investigation for this show.
I can accept this season's result, but I'm still thinking that Mnet manipulate the result of two previous seasons

i mean, i get it somewhat, but my first thought regarding this was “...damn, is it that serious?”. i suppose it is given the amount of bank this group will make but it just seems so funny to get the police involved.

The police specifically is what's weird to me. Does Korea not have a law enforcement division specifically for white collar financial crimes? Even "cyber investigation" doesn't seem quite right

I didn't watch 48 but the way the Japanese trainees were screwed over when iirc at least 5 or 6 of them were making the top ranking before the final ep...god does it grind my gears. Esp considering the fact that at least a handful of members in the current lineup are total stage filler.

I think the premise was fucked from the beginning. If Izone was truly meant to be a half Japanese/half Korean group, then the Japanese public should get to vote too. Or, at LEAST reserve six spots for each nationality of trainee. But that wouldn't make sense if you only care about getting Japanese coin while involving as few actual Japanese ppl as possible 🙄 I guess Aki-P only agreed to send the girls bc he wanted that male season in Japan, which could allow him to bite into the Johnny's market share...

the Korean public would have never accepted a group where Korean and Japanese girls were given an equal chance, there always had to be more Korean girls than Japanese.
lil_poisonfrog 27th-Jul-2019 03:37 pm (UTC)
True but do you think anything would be different today if 4 or 5 members were Japanese instead of 3? Ppl bitched and moaned about just those 3 so I don't think things would've been so much worse

I dunno, I never underestimate the ability of Korean nationalists to put up a fuss about things that don't matter

I’m still trying to figure out the math how a girl jumps from 19 to 3 in the span of a week when she wasn’t even trending during the show. Like I get that certain girls likely would have lost some footing without the two pick votes but only 3 of AKB girls making it?
premonitioner 27th-Jul-2019 02:51 pm (UTC)
Gaeun never left the top ten until the last vote, that's what puzzled me the most. Like I love Chowon and Miho TO DEATH (esp Myao, I've loved her since my AKB fan days) but I know they don't fit the Korean idol standards and I'd made my peace with that, but Gaeun? Gaeun should have made it. But she didn't fit the IZONE concept. For me, that was so suspect.

When the girls who were fighting for that last spot were Gauen, Miho, Chowon and Chaeyeon I was almost sure it was Gaeun. The two with a storyline were her and Chaeyeon; while Gaeun sort of disappeared at the end and Chaeyeon got a 9th inning miracle. But it was wild how those were the final four.
Edit: Also Gauen not fitting the concept is just...mmm. For a check I would be doing whatever you need to be and I bet she would be as well.

what I meant is that mnet decided Gaeun didn't fit the IZONE concept
cxxl 27th-Jul-2019 04:06 pm (UTC)
Oh I know (my bad). I just meant that it’s bogus to discount her because of her perceived maturity (which is moot anyway because Izone plays on both ends). Nothing Gaeun did ever screamed she leaned toward something more than the other. People just assumed she couldn’t.
premonitioner 27th-Jul-2019 09:39 pm (UTC)
that WE saw - I don't trust mnet at all anymore lol
cxxl 27th-Jul-2019 09:59 pm (UTC)
Right like? At least sit her happy behind at 12 or something.
miuratenshi 27th-Jul-2019 06:35 pm (UTC)
Chowon not making it was such bs.
cxxl 27th-Jul-2019 04:31 pm (UTC)
This was going to happen eventually. Especially after how big season 2 was. Like many have said before during and after most seasons, a lil riggamoris was probably always in play. Now we got companies fed up with it. Whether it was simply voting inflation or straight up tampering, the Produce series-wanna-be-Franchise might have hit the wall (if only temporarily).

I figured they would try to brush it off, and it was looking like it was resolved, but now the police are involved! I hope we will find out what actually went down.
