SM accused of plagiarizing foreign designer Paris 99 for Red Velvet's comeback

Greatly appreciate so many of you bringing to my attention k-pop group @redvelvet.smtown wearing garments that take heavy “inspiration” from my work. No one on the team @smtown ever reached out to collaborate on designs, which I would have loved to participate in. The company also took from our imagery which we created with artist @ondine.vinao. It deeply hurts to see large groups, that could have helped out a small designer, instead take from our hard work and brand it as their own. Check out our story for me examples

SM Entertainment is under suspicion of plagiarizing Red Velvet's new concept outfits.

Many fans have left comments under the group's official Instagram @redvelvet.smtown asking for clarifications because according to the designer, SM's designs clearly plagiarized his work as evident from the checkered and wave patterns in the dress and straps. According to netizens, "Red Velvet's clothes also have a very similar vibe to those worn by Paris 99 models."

The controversial outfits were worn as part of the jacket photos for Red Velvet's new mini album 'The ReVe Festival 'Day 2' that was released on the 20th.

[Netizen comments]1. [+919, -26] SM is a repeat offender when it comes to stealing outfit designs, no?

2. [+820, -34] SM has quite a few scandals themselves, just that they're always being buried by YG

3. [+801, -122] SM has been known to copy international designers and concepts since their SNSD days ㅋㅋㅋ I wonder if they'll finally get what's coming for them

4. [+118, -0] Just looks like picnic blankets...

5. [+50, -36] Even before Red Velvet, SM copied SNSD's outfits too

6. [+44, -5] And here I was thinking Red Velvet was dressed decently for once

7. [+38, -5] Why doesn't SM just buy the outfits? Why do they always rip off designers? It's not like SM doesn't have the money for it?

8. [+37, -26] As if it's only Red Velvet, it was no joke with Soshi too ㅋㅋ

9. [+31, -0] For a company that makes so much money, you would think they'd just buy luxury brands to dress their idols in

10. [+22, -0] You can basically assume that the majority of SM's outfits are plagiarized. If you look them up, SM idols are dressed in all sorts of copied designs from other brands and designers. The majority of BoA's outfits are copied from Beyonce and Rihanna.

11. [+20, -11] That's undeniable ㅡㅡ

12. [+17, -0] It's not news that SM copies their outfits

Is this inspiration or plagiarism?

In my opinion, paris99 totally has a case if they decide to pursue it. Pastel vichy dresses aren't original, but the wavy white shoulder straps + the way the dresses are cut in the back is too similar, especially Irene's dress
Also I'll probably check paris99's shop for myself lmao those dresses are so cute

This is plagiarism. The devil is in the details and the fact that the colour scheme, print, wavy details and cutouts are so similar makes it pretty clear. Plus SM has a history of this (look at SNSD's Gucci knockoffs)

where did SM got the outfit from? in house designer?
That person shoul most definitely be questionned on this
kcaomei 21st-Aug-2019 03:21 pm (UTC)
when will SM stop thinking they won't get caught? (or maybe they just don't care idk)

it's really obvious that these ideas were definitely lifted from that designer lol

Dang SM even copies the entire outdoors photo shoot aesthetic lol. If it was just a case of basic gingham dresses looking similar, I would have rolled my eyes but this...... this is v blatant. On a lighter note, these dresses are so cute!

They've been doing this for such a long time, they don't care. I don't understand why they're so cheap with wardrobe budget.
coyote_revolver 21st-Aug-2019 04:52 pm (UTC)
This is not the first time SM has done this. I hope the designer pursues legally and she wins.
SM has the money to buy famous designer brands, it’s ridiculous they don’t even try to make a deal with other designers.

i used to not care when i found out about sm doing these things, i was like "eh the rich stealing from the rich, whatever"
but having realized just how rich and powerful sm is, they could definitely afford to buy the clothes legitimately

mess. i hope paris99 wins. also has f(x) ever worn plagiarized outfits? ppl in the comments mentioned soshi and BoA but not f(x). also do the boy groups ever get knockoff outfits?
pikapika217 21st-Aug-2019 07:26 pm (UTC)
I don't think SM ever cared enough about f(x) to plagiarize their looks

lizanka23 22nd-Aug-2019 06:46 am (UTC)
💀💀 you didn’t lie tho
pikapika217 21st-Aug-2019 07:27 pm (UTC)
SM definitely refined the looks but those straps and cutouts definitely give them away a bit

Definitely. I actually like how RVs look more than the designer oop-
goshipgurl 21st-Aug-2019 08:13 pm (UTC)
SM stealing outfits? gasp
Maybe they'll call this an hommage to paris99 again like they did with soshi and their gucci outfits lol
921227 22nd-Aug-2019 12:02 am (UTC)
Wardrobe team head probably saw them, liked them, showed them for SM and got greenlit to reproduce them. To me, SM could dodge any legal action by going 'theres plenty of gingham, print dresses w cutouts available at retail' and show some. I think the burden of proof will fall on the designer to show their design is unique and made before SM team

pikapika217 22nd-Aug-2019 12:10 am (UTC)
I think it's the strapping/trimming detail. The colors are obvious but the way it's cut and trimmed give them away
sciencebottle 22nd-Aug-2019 12:46 am (UTC)
They straight up swiped the design. Its so blatant. They could have easily contacted the designer to work with them...
krissasaur 22nd-Aug-2019 07:50 am (UTC)
At first I was like???? Until I realized they were actually the designers designs.... like the pink dress especially wow. There is no denying they saw this first.
pseudo_shigure 22nd-Aug-2019 09:11 am (UTC)
I checked Paris99’s price and i thought it’d probably cheaper to just buy from them instead of making the dresses themselves, assuming fabric and labor cost in korea is much more than what i have in my country. Unless the dressmaker are in house and paid just monthly wage i guess, but that’a weird right lol
myungung 22nd-Aug-2019 01:48 pm (UTC)
damn SM strikes again. what misers to not give credit or bother buying from them.
