Goo Hara’s Ex-Boyfriend Choi Jong Bum Sentenced With Probation

Goo Hara's ex BF Choi Jeong Bum sentenced with 1,5 yrs in prison w/ 3 years probation, Hara's legal side asking for stronger punishment for his wrong doing (threats, coercion, injuries, and property damages ) instead of just a probation

On August 29, the Seoul Central District Court, led by head judge Oh Duk Shik, handed down their sentence for Goo Hara’s ex-boyfriend Choi Jong Bum.

Choi Jong Bum received a prison sentence of one year and six months, suspended for three years of probation. This means that if he commits an offence during the three-year probation period, he will serve out his prison sentence for one year and six months.

Justice Oh stated, “Mr. Choi was the first to initiate the breakup. After getting drunk, he went to the victim’s house and found the victim sleeping. He woke her up and complained about the victim’s behaviour before the situation severely and suddenly devolved into a violent physical fight. Looking at police photos from the incident, the victim was also severely scratched. We recognize that the victim was injured from violence that surpassed what could be called self-defence.

With regards to the charge that Choi Jong Bum had threatened to send a video to a media outlet, the judge said, “Our view of the situation is that Mr. Choi was angry about the injuries he saw on his own body and told the victim that he would send a video that would make it impossible for her to pursue an entertainment career.

The court found Choi Jong Bum guilty of four of the five charges that had been laid against him. He was acquitted of the charge of filming the victim’s body without permission. Justice Oh said, “The victim did not give her express consent, but it does not appear as though the defendant went against the victim’s will.”

In their assessment of the case, the court concluded, “During the breakup process with his lover, Mr. Choi caused injuries to the victim as well as receiving injuries on his own face. He was angry about this and threatened to contact a media outlet to end the victim’s career. By making her kneel and other such behavior, he caused serious suffering to the female celebrity victim.”

Goo Hara’s legal representatives issued a response to the statement that said, “The court has acknowledged that the defendant is guilty of intimidation, assault, coercion, and property damage, but has given him a suspended sentence. Society needs tougher punishments in order to eradicate the kind of criminal behavior that Choi Jong Bum committed. We hope that during the appeals trial, the defendant will be appropriately sentenced according to the weight of his crime.”

Back in 2018, Goo Hara and Choi Jong Bum got into a physical altercation on September 13 around 1 a.m. Choi Jong Bum initially reported to the police that Goo Hara had assaulted him, but Goo Hara countered with claims that Choi Jong Bum had blackmailed her with a sex tape. Eventually both were forwarded to the prosecution on separate charges, but Goo Hara received a suspension of indictment while Choi Jong Bum’s case went to trial.

Earlier this year, Choi Jong Bum was charged by prosecutors with violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (filming body parts without consent), assault causing bodily harm, intimidation (blackmail), coercion, and destruction and damage of property. He denied all charges aside from the one on property damage. Goo Hara was scheduled to testify as a witness in Choi Jong Bum’s trial, but her testimony was delayed for health reasons. She eventually testified behind closed doors in July. Later that month, the prosecution demanded a prison sentence of three years for Choi Jong Bum.

dongsaengkiller 29th-Aug-2019 11:19 am (UTC)
Forgive me OP but your post isn’t clear. So he’s going to jail right? Then probation afterwards?
dantethetaco 29th-Aug-2019 11:36 am (UTC)
I'm not sure, but isn't it like you have the probation and if you violate it then you do the prison sentence? I might be totally wrong tho
juhli 29th-Aug-2019 12:15 pm (UTC)
Hes getting 3 years probation. If he does another crime during these 3 years, hell go to prison for 1,5 years
dongsaengkiller 29th-Aug-2019 03:41 pm (UTC)

aures 30th-Aug-2019 06:35 am (UTC)

premonitioner 29th-Aug-2019 11:26 am (UTC)
wow actual jail time i was starting to think that korea didn't know what prisons were

also i'm 1000000% certain that if Hara hadn't hurt herself he'd just have gotten probation and that's the saddest thing about this
juhli 29th-Aug-2019 12:16 pm (UTC)
Hes getting probation, thats why haras lawyers are demanding a stronger punishment.
premonitioner 29th-Aug-2019 12:17 pm (UTC)
oh goody, so korea DOESN'T have prisons that must be why all these scumbag men are getting probation
lizanka23 29th-Aug-2019 02:31 pm (UTC)
good for them. he should get actual prison time. like were the medical records and photos of her injuries not enough to prove that he is a potential danger to other women too??
goshipgurl 29th-Aug-2019 01:34 pm (UTC)
What a ridiculous punishment... 3 years probation.
adenar 29th-Aug-2019 01:57 pm (UTC)

yesungholic 29th-Aug-2019 02:08 pm (UTC)
We covering the douchebag eyes now? We all know how he looks like. He's looking horrible.... Good... Very good.
But doesn't Korea have prisons? Why are these excuses for men always on probation?
goshipgurl 29th-Aug-2019 03:12 pm (UTC)

chikage_chan 29th-Aug-2019 02:23 pm (UTC)
It's sad that I'm actually happy he at least got some kind of punishment, even if minimal... I was expecting to walk away scot free, considering Korea's track record.

coyote_revolver 29th-Aug-2019 02:36 pm (UTC)

honeebs 29th-Aug-2019 03:02 pm (UTC)
Shit ok it's a start kor.
the blurred eyeballs tho, we are so definitely past hiding his visual identity.

Good for her for staying strong.

kimbafierce 29th-Aug-2019 04:15 pm (UTC)
For real, does Korean judges know any other punishment besides probation???
He abused her, filmed her illegally, blackmailed her with the footage he illegally obtained, and actually tried to sell the footage to the press.. He also showed no sign of remorse, trying to plug his salon in his reflection litter (which I hope is flopping). ALL of this and the worst he gets is probation?

lydzi 29th-Aug-2019 04:30 pm (UTC)
They hate women all over the world but SKorea is really fighint to take the crown on that subject... she had some internal injuries from being raped but not even jail? Ok. Ok.
juhli 29th-Aug-2019 05:11 pm (UTC)
wait, what, rape?? I thought it was a physical fight, not sexual assault?
lydzi 29th-Aug-2019 05:13 pm (UTC)
I remember reading she had internal injuries (bleeding from the uterus and vagina) and that is not the result of domestic fight imo. That's a direct cause of rape.
juhli 29th-Aug-2019 05:10 pm (UTC)
I just added the soompi article that gives more information.
He was found guilty on four out of the five charges: assault causing bodily harm, intimidation (blackmail), coercion, and destruction and damage of property. And still he only gets probation.

Proportionality in self-defense is a reasonable proposition, but SK can we stop this nonsense that scratches on the face of a male perpetrator are excessive relative to extensive bruising and lacerations on a smaller female?

SK is the land of probation for guilty men.

When they say 'commit' one more offense, I assume they mean conviction? Conviction seems pretty hard to achieve against a male perpetrator, so like is there any bearing to this probation stuff?
