Youtuber Safiya Nygaard gets a K-Pop Makeover

So we traveled to East Asia to film a six-part series about beauty, style, and shopping and here, finally, is part 4 - we went to Seoul, South Korea and got a K-Pop style makeover! We visited a stylist (@5:30), makeup artist, and hair dresser (@16:10) who all have worked with real-life K-Pop stars before and got a head-to-toe look inspired by today's most popular K-Pop stars - like Blackpink, Twice, Red Velvet, and BTS, amongst others. And, I became a K-Pop stan along the way. Yes, it happened. What do you guys think of my K-Pop makeover look?

I usually like how Safiya does videos like this (even though there's something about her enunciation and speaking in general that's just grating to me lol). She sounds like she really did try to learn as much as she could instead of just going "Kpop video? BTS!!!1111!!"

Speaking of which, I was pleasantly surprised to see a decent variety of different group clips!

Her videos may be absolutely useless sometimes, but she’s cute and I really enjoyed this one.

I was just so glad she got the harness out of her crotch

but she did end up looking very kpop and made me feel better about my own baby hairs in the current summer humidity

i'm so in love with safiya, she always approaches these videos with respect and appreciation and i love how she never complains and moans about things and that she's always so open and willing (yet respecting her boundaries)

I wonder what that stylist would do if I showed my black ass up and asked for a kpop makeover

sometimes i think about these kinds of things when a friend comes back from japan or korea and wants to show me their new haircut. tbh you'd have either no hair or dry/matted hair. either way there'd be anger and tears lol. though their Are some places that can do black hair just fine i've heard (even when my ma was there over two decades ago there were 1 or 2)

Yeah I always think this. Even when KennieJD who is black but lighter skinned shows their "dark" Korean makeup I'm like...my dark skinned self can't even use that as a highlighter lmao. With hair I think the fact that black people rarely trust anyone to even touch it right (even other black stylists) I would make sure my hair was either blown out or braided before I travel to an Asian country.

I have 3A curls and I never found a hairstylist who was able to do anything other than straighten them and give me a hairstyle for straight hair. I can't imagine they'd be able to fathom anything curlier or more coarse

I've grown to really enjoy Safiya's videos, and have enjoyed her Asian trip ones so far. I liked the amount of research put into this and was particularly excited that Weki Meki got some shine in amongst the usual suspects. The final outfit was cute and I want it,and I loved what they did with her hair and makeup.

Safiya always does so much research and really puts effort into her videos so i'll definitely be watching this later~

I know some people find her annoying but her harmless videos are pretty cute. Like I'm not trying to be stressed. And when it's something to do with other cultures she really tries to know her stuff. I saw she had to speak out on twitter because kpop fans were attacking her for saying BTS started the harness trend when she was saying they made it more popular after Fake Love era

I truly do not understand people's hate for her.
ONTD acts like she's some actual terror or something.

As far as Youtuber's go, she seems pretty harmless (generally speaking.)
Outside of being the "quirky, but relatable" Youtube trope.

She likes another youtubers tweet and commented “hope your ok” on it (Taylor r) that was some vague tweet about sticking up for yourself after getting hate comments, except Taylor r was getting hate bc of her rich husbands site which basically has pretty suggestive photos of women including underage women so she got a lot of shit from PULL. So ppl think she either didn’t understand the context and just liked it without researching or liked it knowing the context and didn’t give a shit about the husbands site. Gotta agree with PULL on this one as I went to the site and the one page was pretty sketch.

I always watch her videos. They're not too loud, and she's pretty down to earth. This video was fun to watch!

I really like it when she does these makeover videos, because she usually puts a fair amount of research into them and doesn't halfass it.

....but the video should not be 32 minutes long. I wish she talked a little faster when narrating. Just doing that would cut like 5 mins off the video and make it even better lol
goshipgurl 31st-Aug-2019 07:30 pm (UTC)
I watch her videos on 1.5 speed 👀

I really like her and how much research and effort she puts on every single video she does. I understand that her narrating it's not for everyone, but to the point people hate on her... I don't get it. Maybe cause she came from buzzfeed? Idk, but she seems pretty chill

i like her, she's harmless. i could do without her bad makeup science videos but the ones she shot in japan and korea have been cute.

I love Safiya.
I love kpop.
I see nothing wrong - this a great merge of a person of colour (even though many forget she is of Indian descent) and traditionalist small sized, South East Asian styling.
She brought her own clothes just in case, without seeming disrespectful, she styled it really well to conscept, with an ACTUAL Korean Stylist review, she is still herself, she fucking researches SO WELL, I just-- Safiya is one to always look out for.
She's charming, sometimes in the "hah, ha, I'm silly and relatable" category without being too annoying (for me at least). And I just truly appreciate every bit of content she puts out.

Edit: I'm drinking wine and my spelling is shite. Hashtag: English is my 3rd language.
