On September 14, KBS’s “Immortal Songs” held a family special in honor of the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday.
The musical guests invited to perform were Duetto member Yoo Seul Gi and his brother Yoo Him Chan, married couple Ham So Won and Jin Hua, N.Flying’s Yoo Hwe Seung and his father Yoo Dong Gyu, Bobby Kim and his father Kim Young Geun, trot singer Song Ga In and her brother Jo Sung Jae, and Lee Moo Song and his sister-in-law Noh Sa Bong.
N.Flying’s Yoo Hwe Seung had previously shared that his father was a huge fan of the show. In an interview, Yoo Hwe Seung said, “I was worried that my father would say no because he doesn’t have any stage experience, but he readily agreed.”
His father added, “I didn’t have any confidence in myself, but this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that my son had given me.”
The father-son duo also talked about how the father had been reluctant to let his son pursue a music career at first. “I tried really hard to stop him,” Yoo Dong Gyu said. “I wanted him to study more, so I tried to stop him from pursuing music.”
Yoo Hwe Seung said, “At first, I listened to my parents. I studied and went to university, but I thought, ‘Can I really live without singing?’ And I decided that I could not. So I tried to persuade them again. I asked them to give me just half a year.”
Yoo Dong Gyu said, “One day, all of a sudden, I turned on the TV and he was there. He’d become a singer before I knew it.”
Yoo Hwe Seung and his father chose to sing Yang Hee Eun’s song “Mother to Daughter” and moved audiences with their emotional duet. Even MC Shin Dong Yup choked up and had trouble making his closing remarks after the end of the performance.
