(UPDATE) in today's wtf news: Jessica revealed to have written YA novel, in development for screen

Jessica Jung is hitting the books.

The K-pop star will publish her debut novel, Shine, in the fall of 2020, EW can announce exclusively. It’s part of a two-book deal Jung made with Simon Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, for a series about a Korean-American teenager in training to become the next major K-pop star. (The sequel is slated for 2021.)

And that’s not all: EW has also learned that Glasstown Entertainment, the producing and book-development company founded by authors Lauren Oliver and Lexa Hillyer, has already sold Shine in 11 foreign territories and is currently developing the project for the screen with Matt Kaplan of ACE Entertainment, the team behind Netflix’s smash adaptation To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Jung, who was born in San Francisco and is best known as a former member of the girls’ group Girl’s Generation, drew from personal experience in writing the book. She was included in Forbes’ 30 under 30 Asia list of influential people in 2017 and is one of the most-followed K-pop stars on Instagram.

“With Shine, I wanted to tell a big, fun, escapist story that also examines in-depth, behind- the-scenes aspects of the K-pop world,” Jung said in a statement. “My goal was to tell a transparent, candid story — in a way that sometimes fiction does best.”

“This series embodies everything I love about YA — it’s romantic and juicy, timely, and true, and will speak to anyone who has ever felt like a fish out of water,” added Jennifer Ung, a senior editor at Simon Pulse. “I can’t wait for all readers, but especially Asian-American teens, to see themselves in Jessica’s creation, Rachel Kim.”

this is so out of left field and absolutely appeals to the trashy theatre child inside me so I'm here for it
benihime99 10th-Oct-2019 04:45 pm (UTC)
Expose them baby girl
baekpedaling 10th-Oct-2019 04:46 pm (UTC)
Yes! Our in disguise tell all! Wanna bet the company the character goes to is some really obvious off brand SM? Like mangas do with real brands (i.e. cucci instead of gucci)
maiself 10th-Oct-2019 04:51 pm (UTC)

So will Krystal star in the movie or not?

lizanka23 10th-Oct-2019 05:22 pm (UTC)
interesting! she probably wanted to write a tell-all but also avoid lawsuits from SM, so she decided to brand it as fiction

Her music career does nothing for me but hopefully her books are better

Not that I plan on reading it lol. Edit - oh personal experience? Ok maybe I’ll read it

Hmm. Don’t know how I feel about this since the YA books on kpop i’ve heard about are so unbelievably trashy and dumb (generic white girl who writes lyrics changes the life of generic kpop boy who doesn’t know what REAL music is!!!!!!! Or something along those lines) but since this is based on her real experiences, it might be interesting and potentially exposing.

myrrhcat 10th-Oct-2019 05:38 pm (UTC)
i doubt it'll contain anything particularly juicy, if it touches on the difficulties of the industry it'll probably be stuff we know like forced diets, no creative control, members/staff not getting along, etc.
but prove me wrong!
dior_chic 10th-Oct-2019 05:43 pm (UTC)
Mte - I highly doubt we’ll get anything new. I’m guessing the juiciest would be a character being similarly to Taeyeon in terms of drama
coyote_revolver 10th-Oct-2019 05:47 pm (UTC)
Well, can't deny, I'm really curious about this. So random lol.
kcaomei 10th-Oct-2019 06:16 pm (UTC)
write a tell all... but make it fiction!!!

ia with other comments saying it probably won't be anything new or groundbreaking, but i guess i'd give it a read if it's not too cringe
labovm 10th-Oct-2019 06:44 pm (UTC)
this is gonna be the closest to a tell all book so it better fucking be good.

but i prbly won't read it, i don't care/dislike most ya books.
dior_chic 10th-Oct-2019 09:06 pm (UTC)
Yea YA is fucking cringeworthy most of the time lol
gigabytexx 10th-Oct-2019 06:53 pm (UTC)
I feel like she always does this kind of noise marketing but none of it worked big.... feels like her 'achievements' are overhyped, and it felt weird tbh lol
kenziekinz09 10th-Oct-2019 07:09 pm (UTC)
Just curious, what do you think would be “bigger”? She’s fairly limited in what she can do in Korea.
gigabytexx 10th-Oct-2019 07:27 pm (UTC)
Like to make a name out of herself... idk. I dont remember the exact situation bec I didnt follow her and this happened many years ago, I think I've read discussion posts when she launched her glasses line, it was being talked about as successful, many celebs wore it and she got invited to fashion show etc... but at the same time people said nobody actually bought her brand. Also about her career in China it was hyped a lot but I've read some weibo posts saying the drama (?) didnt do well.

It's like how my mom talked big about my neighbour who got his master degree, able to purchase a brand new car, is always went on vacation, always appear neat & good-looking etc etc then I found out he's can't get a job & only got money from his parents...... you know, something like that.
goshipgurl 10th-Oct-2019 10:37 pm (UTC)
It's true that her fans, especially her chinese ones, keep B&E alive. Many k-stylists make idols wear her clothes so I guess the brand is doing fine. She's getting invited to fashion shows and booked as a testimonial but that's only because she has many followers on instagram... She's basically an influencer/it-girl at this point and not really a singer anymore.
kenziekinz09 11th-Oct-2019 07:22 pm (UTC)
Eh, I think all the Soshi girls are kind of stuck in that their individual careers will likely never surpass their time in SNSD.
goshipgurl 11th-Oct-2019 07:45 pm (UTC)
True. To be honest, I only see Taeyeon having a long career and still be a succesful singer in 5-10 years. Yoona will maybe still be active as an actress, but the others will just... live off their soshi money
lil_poisonfrog 12th-Oct-2019 12:11 am (UTC)
All of the B&E stuff I've seen look so basic, to the point that it's kind of wild she was hellbent on having her own fashion line to do....that. It all looks like it could come form any overpriced luxury brand

dio_elaclaire 10th-Oct-2019 08:28 pm (UTC)
i... don't really know what to think lol. but i'll definitely read it.
horichansenpai 11th-Oct-2019 02:04 am (UTC)

Can't wait for the story of protagonist Bessica becoming a kpop star and how she becomes frenemies with her groupmate Baeyeon!!1!

But yeah this is weird news to wake up to

mecchayabai 12th-Oct-2019 02:54 am (UTC)
They both fall for the mysterious, charming singer/actor tsundere oppa who hates everything related to kpop. But Bessica, who's ~not like other girls~, shows him that under the gruesome training and strict rules, it's all about their shared love for music and performing. (Also, at some point there's a fierce competition of who will be the main vocalist of the group, but in the end, Bessica refuses to give up even though everyone is against her and wins the position over Baeyeon)

I'm sorry.
horichansenpai 12th-Oct-2019 01:51 pm (UTC)
Ahahah tsundere oppa. This synopsis kinda sounds more entertaining than the actual synopsis 😂
lilykt7 11th-Oct-2019 11:50 am (UTC)
She tries out a lot of stuff which I think is cool. I haven’t necessarily been super into any of her projects. But as long as the book isn’t $200 I might check it out.
lil_poisonfrog 12th-Oct-2019 12:14 am (UTC)
This is definitely interesting, she knows how to make a headline if nothing else.

Even if it's corny YA fiction, hopefully it will still touch on realities of the industry that a lot of young Kpop fans would rather ignore
aeries_amethyst 12th-Oct-2019 01:48 am (UTC)
i can't say that i ever saw this coming at all lol XD but i will admit that as random as this is, it kinda makes sense?
