Super Junior’s Choi Siwon Apologizes After “Liking” Tweet About Hong Kong Demonstrations

Super Junior’s Choi Siwon has now apologized following an uproar among Chinese fans after he “liked” a tweet about the pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.

On November 24, Choi Siwon “liked” a Korean news outlet’s tweet with a link to a translated CNN interview with Patrick Chow (also known as Choi Pak Kwan), a 21-year-old unarmed protestor who was shot and critically injured by a police officer in Hong Kong. The interview includes comments such as, “People can be killed by bullets. But beliefs can’t be killed.”

Choi Siwon’s action drew large criticism from Chinese netizens as a screenshot of his Twitter page was shared on the Chinese social media site Weibo.

Choi Siwon later wrote on his Weibo, “I have checked what happened on Twitter. I was simply expressing my interest with just the hope that the situation of chaos and violence will come to an end soon.” He went on to say, “I sincerely apologize that my action has caused you to have ill feelings and feel disappointment.”

Despite this, Choi Siwon’s fan club on Weibo (which has over 90,000 followers) announced their decision to close.
