And it's up to us to find those hidden gems, that might otherwise be burried under countless songs.
Every month I'll try to look back on girl group and female soloist release (I don't have time to waste on boys) and try to find out the song that should have been "IT" but was overlooked.
What's my expertise on this?
It's just fun & games but to paraphrase the great Eugene Lee Yang
"I'm right, you're wrong,
shut up, discuss in the comments".
Skipping Saturday (not interesting) and Hyolyn (since pretty much every song got the single treatment)
Irene & Seulgi - Monster
Title track: "Monster"
It could have been: "Feel Good"
For a sub-unit with so much potential, I&S really failed to deliver anything of interest.
"Monster" is too bland to be offensive, it's the equivalent of sliced bread. I guess Sm plan was to rely heavily on the girls' popularity and tones of queer baiting (which works for the MV but not so much on spotify/itunes...).
"Diamond" could be slightly more interesting and a bit reminiscent of "Be natural", but it's a b-side to the core (a follow up at best).
I guess "Feel good" is the only option...
GFriend - Song of the Sirens
Title track: "Apple"
It should have been: "Crème Brûlée"
Although "Apple" departs from the usual Gfriend sound, the rest of the mini goes back to the sound we know and love. There's a lot of anime opening/ending. "Eye of the storm" has magical girl written all over it.
I personally love "Crème Brûlée", which could have been a really nice/chill title track. It departs from their usual sound without being too "bighitified" which was my main issue with "Apple" (Nobody wants a female BTS).
ITZY - Not Shy
Title track: "Not Shy"
It could have been: "Don't give a what"
"DGAW" is fun, it has a slight rock element and it keeps with ITZY "high energy" signature. It would be amazing live (great song to hype a crowd), so it's a win for me.
"ID" is also a contender and "SURF" is a cute, yet generic, summery song.
April - Now or Never
Title track: "Now or never"
It should have been: "Paradise"
Only two song, and yet they managed to pick the wrong one... an achievement on its own.
Paradise is superior by default thanks to the absence of an annoying rap. It flows better and is basically the perfect summer song.
Jessi - Nuna
Title track: "Nuna nana"/"who dat B"/"Drip"
It should have been: "Numb"
All 3 singles are typical of the try hard song we've come to expect from Jessi. It fits her brand; so it makes sense to pick either of those as a title track. Sadly she is not a good enough rapper, and those songs do nothing for her vocals. If you want something that actually showcase her singing (that also departs from the walking cliché she turned herself into), "Numb" is the song for you.
It's softer, admittedly generic.
Yukika - Soul Lady
Title track: a lot
It could have been: "Shade"
Such a good retro song.
Go check it out and thank me later.
Rocket Punch - Blue Punch
Title track: "Juicy"
It should have been: "Summer Punch"
I know I'm usually the first to complain about the "annoying chants", BUT it's summer so it does feel appropriate.
Which is why "Summer Punch">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>"Juicy"
It's fun, fresh, season appropriate and super catchy.
I'm also partial to "Twinkle Star", although it's more of a follow up.
Dreamcatcher - Dystopia : Lose Myself
Title track: "BOCA"
It should have been: "Break the wall"
There's element I love with "BOCA" (the pre-chorus) and others I hate (can you guess?)
I started as a huge Dreamcatcher fan, but lately it feels like their release all resemble each other à la Cold Play (which is never a good thing). Their releases are good, but a bit stagnant.
I personally enjoy "Break the wall" but I do get why it wasn't picked.
Jung Eun Ji - Simple
Title track: "Away"
It should have been: "Simple is best"
If "Away" is the generic, but very effective, summer song every soloist should release at least once, it lacks the originality that would make it memorable. Don't get me wrong, it's a good song, but anyone could have released it. "Simple is best", on the other hand has that Disney heroine theme song quality which makes it stand out.
Song Ji Eun - Dream
Title track: "MIL (Make It Love)"
It should have been: "MIL"
It was right. They did good.
0mod, would it be ok to pin the post for a little while?
